Prince started his reign in the late 70's but it wasn't until the early 80's where he really started to change the landscape ditching industry funk standards like horn sections and drum for synthesizers and drum machines. The influence of the emerging New Wave scene also came into play on his sonic palette creating something called the Minneapolis Sound. This sounds permeated throughout the R&B pop world with some heavy-duty mimicking. I thought it'd be fun to explore some of these artists who clearly where more than just inspired by Prince...and in some cases very well-known talents who also got bit by the Prince's Minneapolis Funk bug!

Hi Alina! That was quite a show last night. I was wondering if you were kind of high for your maiden voyage. You sounded like you were floating around during your first mic break.

Thanks for this concept program. Anyone watch the 60 Minutes program on Princes musical output? Pretty good. Can't help thinking that Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna and myself were all born within a few months of each other, 1958..

totally Domenic--I mean, Prince didn't invent falsetto but that with the heavy synths and rock guitar soloing was a definite trait that people ate up and bit

Hey all! We won't be hearing a certain Phil Collins song emanating from Ursula's home stu-stu-studio, will we? (Or must we, to complete the concept?)
Avatar 1:00pm

hey Fab! I was tempted...but I ended up not including that---or Stevie's Stand Back (which was actually secretly co written by Prince)--sing Stand Back over Little Red Corvette---perfect lock!

I've seen Sheila E live, playing with her pop, Afro-Cuban maestro Pete Escovedo. No singing about glamorous lives, just pounding the snot out of her timbales.
Avatar 1:30pm
Ursula1000:

that Sign o' the Times concert film where Sheila E is on drums....daaaaaaaamn! She absolutely kills it.

Was cleaning the place here and Curiousity came on. Flashback to seeing the Jets play live with El Debarge at a San Diego County Fair in 1985. 'Who's Johnny' got a 'Crush on' now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
Little Danny:

This period in the mid- to late '80s feels like some final moment for hard funk on the R&B charts.
Avatar 1:39pm
Otis:

Love the Nasty Girl 'don'cha wanna be' line in thsi one! Haven't heard this gem, or quite a few this show. Top top show Ursula. I cannot work so I clean and groove.
Avatar 1:39pm
Ursula1000:

yeah it's a fascinating time where bands like Cameo who were like an 8 piece with a horn section trimmed down to a synth heavy trio
Avatar 1:41pm
Ursula1000:

Otis--Greens III came out w 1 album called Razor that's pretty cool
Avatar 1:43pm
Otis:

I starred the Greens III song, will dig in, thanks U1K in the groove 2-(morris)-Day!
Avatar 1:44pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, didn't the Gap Band have more members in the '70s, til they went electro and shrunk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Sem:

Your show has been a revelation to me: I had no idea that so many groups took the Prince sound and ran with it, hard. Thx, U1K, for that thought to ponder.
Avatar 1:45pm
Ursula1000:

sounds about right Mr Fab---I think Earth Wind and Fire were one of the few from that era that still kept it as a larger group--then again, the EWF horn section is something you can't replace w a synth!
Avatar 1:46pm
Otis:

You Dropped A Bomb 12" had just 3 on the cover. Early Gap to 80s gap, so good.
Avatar 1:46pm

Ursula1000:

the perfect sister show to this would be the influence of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of The Time and their production influence which is possibly bigger than Prince on the Soul landscape of the mid to late 80s. Though Prince would probably claim they're just ripping HIM off!
