Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

  Fri. 4/13/18 12:18pm Dean:

All along I've assumed without giving it a second thought that the "It's just after [noon/midnight] in [somewhere]" epigraphs were accurate. But it's just after 6:00am in Honolulu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

That's just bad editing on my part, Dean. I said "6:00 AM."

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 12:36pm Parq:

Lizzie, if it's a reference to the same phenomenon, I would think 10 PM would be more like 2 AM. When we went during my teen-hood, we couldn't make it past 7 PM the first night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

Medicated Goo is a big fave Traffic track for me. Never heard P.P.'s version till just recently. That 2017 comp. is excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 12:39pm Parq:

FT&hPG via Amazon: An oft-overlooked piece of the L.A. pop-psych jigsaw, this 1967 oddity combines typically complex vocal arrangements by the legendary Curt Boettcher with virtuoso guitar interludes from L.A. session legend Mike Deasy, and features backing from the team responsible for the landmark Millennium and Sagittarius LPs

Yeah, John befriended the two main guys in HB maybe 10 or so years ago, and we ended up playing a show with them at Cake Shop in something like 2011, and then on Terre T's show when she did a live broadcast from Maxwell's just before they closed in 2013.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:10pm Roberto:

For some reason I never heard this song until I was in a Pier 1 in the late '80s. My first impression was "damn this song runs long."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:11pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Parq, I visit Maui from California so the time difference isn't so severe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

Roberto, that's called "The Pier 1 Effect." Then there's "The Pottery Barn Corollary."
  Fri. 4/13/18 1:15pm Dean:

This song about wine is the reason I bought that album by Emmylou.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:15pm Roberto:

Remarkable that anyone didn't hear it for decades or heard it late in the game. It's become quite a groaner for some folks or at least a long-time love/hate thing because of its endurance as an over-familiar standard and its irresistible sing-along cuing. Can bring out the grouch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:31pm coelacanth∅:

i didn't know Amie was such a standard. it's weird that i've never heard it in the pub that i go to, when i go to the pub. there's a rural vibe there and often classic 60s-70s radio hits, and sometimes country music and certainly "sing-along" songs get played on the jukebox.

Amie was included in a seemingly permanent playlist at a small midwest neighborhood bar, frequented in college, along with (much) Marshall Tucker, Loudon Wainwright, Lynyrd Skynyrd...

Will ya play Taylor Swift's new cover of Earth, Wind and Fire's September...willya huh willya? "grim and forgettable," "singularly bereft of joy, rhythm, syncopation"...willya?

I'll take Status Quo over them any time
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

But see, I *don't*. *You* have a rebuttal. This is for middle aged rockers for whom head boppin' constitutes dancing. And I'm ok with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:43pm Parq:

Back. I went to a middle-class suburban college with a big sports program in the 70s, so you can just imagine the mixed emotions I have when I hear "Amie".

How much for a bibihendl?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 1:45pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I just remember Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men" which is sort of stately and slow, not rocking. I didn't know this song and like it much better!

Dominick I've never liked EW&F, can't stand the singer's falsetto, which is a problem and was when I was in college in the 70s and everybody played them.

Wouldn't you kinda expect a band called Status Quo to sound the same album after album?

Speaking of bands that sound the same, Zeke released its first album in almost fifteen years a couple weeks ago. Like they never left.

Early EW&F is more daring, rather interesting.

Gram didn't exactly invent alt-country but he was at the party where the mother got busy...

I can understand disliking EWF's falsetto, or any falsetto; but there are so many things to admire about EWF. Me, EWF is one of the all-time pop/soul acts ever. So many EWF songs are just amazing. "Shining Star", "That's the Way of the World", "Getaway", my god's sake "Fantasy": they are an original.
  Fri. 4/13/18 2:36pm Dean:

Story on the web reports he taught there late '60s to early '70s. Here, results of a search for "cecil taylor" in the WYSO archives:
http://www.greenecountyroom.info/cdm/search/collection/WYSOProgram/searchterm/%22cecil%20taylor%22/order/title

The players don't work for me. The concert consists of two reels, A and B, the latter of which can't be located. I take it this would not have been the event related by Mr. Ward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/13/18 2:37pm Parq:

There's a Little Jimmy Dickens novelty hit "Country Music Lover", in which a good ol' boy laments that his new girl is not one. It has lines like "she thought 'Kitty Wells' was a place a cat goes to get water". Well, there's also the line "Would you believe that she thought "Johnny Cash' was money you find in a commode". So there you are.
