Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 1:17pm glenn:

i think i might still have some topps gum from 1971.
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 1:18pm Alex In Illinois:

In 1971? I did not have access to pop music yet. Maybe records off of cereal boxes, but my folks did not listen to pop music. I did not know that there were other radio stations on transistor radios other than KMOX, and I our stereo was always tuned to KFUO, a classical station.
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 1:18pm KevinfromBayRidge:

I was already bemoaning the declination of freeform on the commercial dial ( WPLJ & WNEW). AOR was rearing it's ugly head.

@UM: I will gladly take that article link when you have less going on...
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 1:36pm glenn:

didn't that washington team eventually become the [boo, hiss and boo some more] texas rangers?
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 1:37pm burke:

What about Karen Carpenter? I guess they moved her out from behind the kit.
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 1:37pm glenn:

i never had any rare earth records. i have lots of rare earth magnets. stronger than shit, they are.
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 1:40pm hyde:

@glenn i sort of botched the story. what happened was that the washington senators *had* moved to texas, and then there was a move to take the padres and sell them to a guy in washington d.c. so topps went ahead and printed cards with the washington imprimatur. but then ray kroc stepped in and kept the padres in s.d.

Something tells me we're not going to hear from one of '71's finest records, likely because it didn't spawn a 7", but probably other reasons, too. It's the LA Philharmonic's recording of Holst's The Planets, Zubin Mehta conducting..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/31/17 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

It was close, Dean.
  Fri. 3/31/17 1:56pm Dean:

It was the thought of back-announcing "Uranus, The Magician" that decided the matter, I know.
  Fri. 3/31/17 2:01pm 67tele:

you're going to have to get drunk and run around the house singing "Black Dog" very loud - it wont scare away the varmint but at least it will know you're crazy and leave your toes alone
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/31/17 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

It's kind of a deal-breaker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/31/17 2:02pm Uncle Michael:

Good advice, Tele.

Alex!

Is it good?
  Fri. 3/31/17 2:09pm βrian:

I would think any cover is better than Van's. [sorry, allergies]
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/31/17 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

allergic to Van?
  Fri. 3/31/17 2:11pm Dean:

Oh, yeah, Humble Pie! I'm awaiting the release of Cherry Red's first "Bootleg Series" installment, three disks!
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 2:11pm βrian:

Profoundly. I always assume everybody is. Except Van, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/31/17 2:12pm doctorjazz:

Humble Pie, like this cover!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/31/17 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

or sometimes you love him and hate him.
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 2:21pm Jeff Golick:

I feel like there is some sort of Van Exhaustion out there, missing the forest (much of his catalog) for the Brown-Eyed trees. Or maybe I'm just overly influenced by @βrian's commentary.
Avatar Fri. 3/31/17 2:21pm Jeff Golick:

This is some great, underplayed Bob rightere.

  Fri. 3/31/17 2:24pm Dean:

Like the Dead, VM is hella prolific. He's bound to generate a spectrum of opinions, and naturally exhaustion will play among them. Although I grew up hearing him on FM radio, my favorite record of his is Into the Music. Thereafter I kinda lost interest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/31/17 2:28pm doctorjazz:

Same here, the early few albums really resonated, he got mystical, I got less involved.

  Fri. 3/31/17 2:35pm Dean:

Indeed, @johnk77, the same. Pat Bag, the bass player, used to drop by the record store where I worked. Likewise, I'd drop by the department store cosmetics counter where she worked. Alice wrote and toured an autobiography a few years ago. I need to read it.
