Avatar 9:12am StringOFperils:

I would have clutched at anything that looked like a lifeline that morning. I swallowed the stuff. For a moment I felt as if somebody had touched off a bomb inside the old bean and was strolling down my throat with a lighted torch, and then everything seemed suddenly to get all right. The sun shone in through the window; birds twittered in the tree-tops; and, generally speaking, hope dawned once more.__Bertie Wooster

starting the year off being picky, but Doug seems you have copy paste issue, Blind Lemon Jefferson in 1947 on Specialty records?

as the fount of so much music edutainment, your playlist should be 100% to the extent possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

@WR
We call that a "transcribing error" in the playlist business. Thanks for catching that.

I think that was actually a cover of the Electric Flag song, “Hey, Little Girl”!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Uncle Michael:

Doug, in case no one else mentioned it, the last time you and I had shows on Xmas and NY was five years ago. This is because we've had two leap years since then. Sometimes we have one in the interim, sometimes two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

@bigplanetnoise
I love you, man!

@Uncle Michael
I kept forgetting to check that. I'll start planning for the next one.
Avatar 10:27am Brian in UK:

Doug. Jaggery is a type of sugar, so perhaps Sweet Sex might have got you in the talent contest or did they pay you in talents?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Very Sketches of Spain-ish here from Mr. Byrd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Brain in UK
We never got paid, but the backstage groupies were quite handsome.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Tasteful effort.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of higher beings, I could not recommend more strongly watching James Erskine's new Billie Holiday documentary titled "Billie." Absolutely gobsmacking footage I've never seen before. And the film is based on the audio recordings of interviews a journalist conducted in the mid-'70s as she was preparing to write a book about Billie Holiday. And she spoke with quite a few historical figures who tell some riveting stories about Billie, her life and times. It is STUPIFYING. A must see.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

@ken krimstein
And, of course, that clip from Sound of Jazz is included in the film. The film presents interviews with a number of people who stated that Billie and Lester were never lovers. They were more like sister and brother. From the nuances of Billie's life that the film puts into context, I believe them. Would never have believed it before.

A final kick in the butt from 2020 is the death of jazz pianist Frank Kimbrough. An excellent "mainstream" musician, he played with the Maria Schneider orchestra through most of its existence and also released a surprisingly good 6-CD set of the complete Thelonious Monk a couple of years ago. He was only 64 and died suddenly, probably of a heart attack. www.wbgo.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am doctorjazz:

Crap, @LG, really liked Frank Kimbrough (that Monk set IS really nice).
Hoping for a better 2021...
Hello, Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

The people weeping the hardest over Frank Kimbrough's shocking death: other pianists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Lovely to see you, doctorjazz!
Avatar 11:22am Brian in UK:

TDK60, good luck today. I received a test pack last Wednesday, supposed to order collection as soon as received, unfortunately the system is closed until 8am tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

The last musician death of 2020 that I heard was the superlative bassist Eugene Wright (who played, most notable, with Dave Brubeck), at 97.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Artie:

Happy New Year, Drummerkin!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya, Artie!
  11:25am Jeff g. via app:

MF Doom, too, RIP.
Pulled something by Kimbrough for Sunday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Better spell that DOOM, Jeff G, or you will get shamed.
  11:27am Jeff g. via app:

True. This has been just the sweetest sweet set.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Gina Bacon:

They do drop! Thank you, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

The onliest thing to drop are tears of joy when you're on the radio, Gina B!
  11:36am Listener Gregory:

Doug, have you listened to that Sonny Rollins in Holland album yet? If so, do you have a review in 10 words or fewer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I have the new Sonny Rollins, but haven't listened yet. But I LOVE it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Gina Bacon:

Aw...thank you, Doug!
  11:38am Listener Gregory:

Fine review. I will keep asking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am doctorjazz:

LG, have it too, also haven't gotten to it (so much music, so little time), but what could be bad? (Working my way through some Blue Note 45 RPM reissues that Uncle Michael "made" me buy...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael's Blue Note 45 show openers have been stupendous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

Pretty much everything Uncle Michael plays is stupendous. HINKY DINKY TIME is also NEXT!

Yeh Gina, brimming with emotion. I'm awake now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Now there are folks on the interwebs who say that "Presberry" is actually Buddy Lamp. But it doesn't sound like Buddy Lamp to me. Any thoughts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

Also, Presberry sounds like a breakfast cereal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Presberriterians sound like high-falutin' deacons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Some other folks on the interwebs have speculated that this is Johnny Copeland on guitar here with Ola V. Harper.

The Highfalutin' Deacons was SUMMMBODY's first gospel group in high school.
