For example, the universal Mexi slang term "chingar" ("to eff") comes from Caló, which was the Romance language spoken by the Spanish and French Romani. The ultimate origin of much Caló slang like the Romani themselves, is India. So you have people who were wrongly classified by Europeans as Indians whose vocabulary ended up including a good number of words from India.

When Franco mentioned cholos, I wondered if it also came from Caló, but just looked it up and it doesn't (it's apparently Carib or Arawak for "dog"). But other slang terms like chaval and chivato are Caló. Franco: that is really interesting, did not know that, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same word. Since the Spanish colonial project coincided with Spain's expulsion of Jews, Muslims, and Romani, many of them found their way to the Americas.

For example, the universal Mexi slang term "chingar" ("to eff") comes from Caló, which was the Romance language spoken by the Spanish and French Romani. The ultimate origin of much Caló slang like the Romani themselves, is India. So you have people who were wrongly classified by Europeans as Indians whose vocabulary ended up including a good number of words from India.

When Franco mentioned cholos, I wondered if it also came from Caló, but just looked it up and it doesn't (it's apparently Carib or Arawak for "dog"). But other slang terms like chaval and chivato are Caló. Franco: that is really interesting, did not know that, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same word. Since the Spanish colonial project coincided with Spain's expulsion of Jews, Muslims, and Romani, many of them found their way to the Americas.
