Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Hi lovelies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm WR:

Hi Danny and Cool Blue Flamers. Will only be listening tonight getting out the jammies and head phones and close my eyes. Unless you play something I just can't resist pontificating about....

Coela coela, Matt, Chresti! Welcome brothers and sisters and in between
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Little Danny:

Thank you Shaw, and howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Aitch:

More great sounds, but now with vision (which I'm trying not to look at, bad for productivity)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm WR:

Discogs can be do funny, this Miriam Burton recording is classified as non-music field recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Little Danny:

C'mon Aitch Sylvie Vartan just jumped from a moving train now is not the time to be looking away!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm coelacanth:

< who's that? anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm coelacanth:

okay, never mind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Aitch:

On the FLAME-O-SCOPE™ coelacanth:, but I'm still trying not to look
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Little Danny:

MARU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm coelacanth:

this Sally Stanley is amazing!
Avatar 10:11pm chresti:

It looked like Sylvie Vartan almost got bonked by a telephone pole
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Little Danny:

Glad you dug it, Coel. Doesn't get much swampier!
Avatar 10:12pm chresti:

Great set LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Little Danny:

Thanks chresti!

Sylvie ALWAYS does her own stunts.
Avatar 10:13pm chresti:

Good luck Aitch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Little Danny:

Not sure which film this is. Huh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm doctorjazz:

Hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Little Danny:

Hi hi hello doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm coelacanth∅:

so, where was that silly train with Sylvie Vartan on it clip from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Little Danny:

@coela: some YouTube channel with a buncha Scopitones. Shouldn't be too hard to find methinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm coelacanth∅:

hey dr.j!
Avatar 10:28pm chresti:

Not sure, somewhere in France?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Little Danny:

Some Kenneth Anger-esque moments in this Dodge promotional video
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny yes "scopitone" must be in the search.
i confess i never heard of Sylvie Vartan before. ...but she looks a bit like a woman i saw on Benny Hill once, about 40 years ago!
Avatar 10:30pm Shaw:

Some of these shots in the Dodge commercial make me think of Ballard's Crash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm coelacanth∅:

i never never see those dodge utes any more. not a 1 in decades.
Avatar 10:31pm Dano59:

I was thinking Tobe Hooper myself; expecting the killer too pop up behind the truck
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Little Danny:

@Shaw: A movie I have deliberately avoided for years. Is it worth watching?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Little Danny:

@coela: '77 was a tough year for American auto reliability in general, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Little Danny:

Haha, dano59, yes! Hi pal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm coelacanth∅:

i think you're right Danny. couple of novas here and there, camaros...
Avatar 10:33pm Honeybear:

more graphical output from the artist behind that Oruã album: cracolagem.tumblr.com
Avatar 10:33pm Dano59:

I gave up on American cars around 1988. Bought a VW, then an Audi; BMWs, Subarus ever since.
Avatar 10:33pm Shaw:

I have never actually seen the movie. I read the book though, and really liked it. Some shots in that commercial reminded me of the way he describes cars in the book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

(one of the many UGLY years for camaro)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Little Danny:

This "Junkopia" short film is very good btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Little Danny:

Wow, thanks, honeybear! Love the Oruã album cover, stoked to look into more by the artist.
Avatar 10:35pm Honeybear:

note the event flyers (for various gigs in rio... back during civilization)
Avatar 10:36pm Dano59:

IMDB: Directed by John Chapman, Chris Marker, Frank Simeone. With Arielle Dombasle. A short film that shows Boundless, Surreal objects that are juxtaposed with our present World. Cars, Motorways, noise of our modern society; A giant city in the distance - all that shrouds this lonely and forgotten island of Dreams. Filmed at the Emeryville Mudflats near San Francisco.
Avatar 10:36pm Honeybear:

@danny - sure thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm melinda:

Junkopia sort of reminds me of the scene in Harold and Maude when they have a picnic in the junkyard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Little Danny:

@shaw: I should probably read the book rather than complaining about the formulaic Scandinavian crime novels I can't seem to stop reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm coelacanth∅:

melinda haha yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Little Danny:

Solid info, thanks Dano!
Avatar 10:38pm Dano59:

Shot in July 1981 while Marker was working on San Soleil! I love me some crazy Americana folk art...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm melinda:

@coel a quick search seems to indicate that it's the same place, no wonder!
Avatar 10:39pm Dano59:

now we're watching The Blob???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm coelacanth∅:

good work melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm melinda:

I love Sans Soleil, I think I might have it on vhs
Avatar 10:40pm Shaw:

Little Danny: ha ha! I'd definitely recommend the book. I love Ballard. I haven't read everything by him, but I think his work is brilliant
Avatar 10:43pm Dano59:

The visual content is vying for dominance over the music this week. Love cracolagem's collages. Like Orua, new to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Matt from New Orleans:

Have a good night everyone. I’ll be listening but feeling disengaged tonight. Not sure why.
Avatar 10:45pm Dano59:

bon soir Matt from NO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Little Danny:

Excellent, Dano. I'm ready and delighted to overwhelm the sensory lobes of all who care to stream the audio+video.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Little Danny:

Still working on the smell component of the Flame-O-Scope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Little Danny:

Cue the smell of chlorine.
Avatar 10:49pm Dano59:

found Sylvie Vartan's Le Locomotion @ www.youtube.com...
-- a pop princess; doing Goffin-King came naturally. I really got into her thru a French cover of 'The Game of Love' in the movie Ruby Sparks.
Avatar 10:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey Danny, I've been listening while asleep, but I'm awake now!
Avatar 10:49pm Honeybear:

when my browser nearly crashes from all the open tabs due to the research I've been doing on stuff I've heard for the first time - that's what I call the end of a good day
Avatar 10:49pm Dano59:

Man Ray !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Little Danny:

Been there, Honeybear! I love that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Little Danny:

Franco, good, I was getting worried! I almost called your name during my mic break.
Avatar 10:52pm Honeybear:

classic Sylvie Vartan: La Plus Belle Pour Aller Danser
Avatar 10:53pm Honeybear:

¡hola Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Little Danny:

This Fred and the Jupiter Gypsies is one of the more inexplicable 45s I own. It's also from my ancestral homeland of central PA, otherwise a cultural vacuum.

Don't worry. This gets less harsh.
Avatar 10:56pm Franco Twinkie:

That would have been funny if I was still unconscious. I could hear the show but there was nothing I could do about it. It would've worked itself into my dreams I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Little Danny:

I only get two hours every week to try and take over your life, Franco. I'll do what it takes.
Avatar 10:58pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm all yours now.
Avatar 11:01pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm drinking coffee, but it doesn't taste like paint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Little Danny:

Dammit Franco that's because I forgot to cue up the paint smell. My fault.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Little Danny:

Here's the latest knuckle-scraping restoration video. Chresti take note.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Little Danny:

Not clear at this point how a "Corner Brace Drill" works, exactly.
Avatar 11:07pm Dano59:

For some reason Jean-Michel Jarre keeps popping up in earshot usually on Youtube. At the top of some British pop show as a chart-topper before Berlin is introduced, last time.
I had the Oxygene and Equinoxe LPs as a callow youth and this sure reminds me of them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Little Danny:

@Dano: definitely that commercial electronic milieu. Moroder-esque to my ears.
Avatar 11:10pm Franco Twinkie:

I have a more up to date Milwaukee. It's for shooting holes in tight corners. They really do work where you can't get a conventional drill to fit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

i was kind of bummed when i first heard this song - demonstrating how one of my favorite bands, ooioo, stole it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Little Danny:

@Franco: Ah, right, I can see how the drill fits together now. Not as exotic as I'd thought.
Avatar 11:12pm Dano59:

Maybe Odorama cards can be part of a future premium, Danny ... lessee ... paint; metal grinder on metal; greasewood and sage ... kerosene and vintage grease and "old car interior"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Little Danny:

I'm unwittingly okay with a lot of stolen music, coela, but I know what ya mean.
Avatar 11:12pm Franco Twinkie:

This guy is asking for it by wearing that shirt with frayed cuffs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm coelacanth∅:

gnight Matt
Avatar 11:13pm Dano59:

that's some fancy Dremeling going on there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Little Danny:

@Dano: I know! If nothing else I need to get the smell cues to line up with the videos and music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Little Danny:

I need a dremel still don't own one. I can't quite rationalize it 'cause I have a buncha of electric spinning/oscillating tools that suffice.
Avatar 11:15pm Dano59:

Smell-O-Vision was Waters' inspiration for the 'Polyester' gimmick; Also found a Smellorama episode of Bear in the Big Blue House ("Snook the skunk shows up for a day of scent discovery.")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Little Danny:

I am fully unrelaxed while preparing to see this man lose a finger.
Avatar 11:16pm chresti:

Aaaack, he's not wearing gloves!
Avatar 11:16pm Dano59:

I only got as far as some grinding/polishing attachments for my drill.
well, losing a finger would make this a good shop educational film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

i wouldn't be wearing gloves for that either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

they get in the way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Little Danny:

There are you, chresti. I need someone to wince sympathetically with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Little Danny:

It was the belt sander that got me anxious, coela.
Avatar 11:18pm chresti:

Nor a respirator.
Avatar 11:18pm Dano59:

good old 3-in-1 oil
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Little Danny:

Beautiful drill I gotta say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm coelacanth∅:

oh i didn't see that. i turned the movie off for a while.
... i've taken off a bit of finger with a table sander. i still don't use gloves; i'm just more careful, and sometimes use pliers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Ignore Function:

Nice show, LD. I especially dug Fred and the Jupiter Gypsies.
Avatar 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

A former room mate had really long hair that got wound on a drill, and it yanked a big chunk out. On his driver license, he had a big patch missing. It made him look like a real psycho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm coelacanth∅:

is that Sky Saxon?
Avatar 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm coelacanth∅:

that's gotta be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Little Danny:

Ignore F! Thank you! Glad you dug that one, it's a weirdee for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Little Danny:

The one and only, coela
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm coelacanth∅:

never mind, i saw the drum!
Avatar 11:23pm Dano59:

Gnoomes are cool. very BJMmmy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm coelacanth∅:

hey Franco!
Avatar 11:23pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Little Danny:

Okay. Anyone care or dare to give me a phonetic spelling of this Irish Gaelic artist and/or title?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm coelacanth∅:

Danny @1112 i'm definitely okay with using others' ideas, but if it's such a thorough appropriation as this was (or, not even) i just as definitely believe credit should be given.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Little Danny:

Totally agree, coel. Appropriation can make for something new and good, musically, but credit is always owed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

Franco @1122 i've had some close calls
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

(with my hair. sorry, i'm catching up)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Little Danny:

I just saw Franco's 11:22 story. I wanna see that photo!
Avatar 11:44pm Franco Twinkie:

I have a picture of Michael in our backyard, but he has a rag wrapped around his head. The hair grew back, but the doctor told him if his hair wasn't so loosely attached, it would have scalped him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Little Danny:

Good lord, Franco. Horrifying. I mean, like an actual horror movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

my first steady job -work study program in high school, was at a machine shop that made radar and sonar parts. mostly lathes, broaches, drills and heavy duty programmed shaping drills. the place was like a freak show with all the various disfigurements and handicaps -created during work hours.
Avatar 11:51pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm missing part of my left thumb - table saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm Little Danny:

Hahaha that's an amazing vision, coela! That SNL skit just wrote itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm coelacanth∅:

ouch
Avatar 11:52pm Dano59:

this Belong is loverly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Little Danny:

It really is, Dano. You'd dig their (small-ish) catalog if you dig this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Little Danny:

I genuinely enjoy the tool- and tool-related mishaps- talk here.
Avatar 11:54pm Dano59:

I'm sure I will.
Avatar 11:55pm Dano59:

I seem to recall a vintage-sportscar-buffs' repair zine called Skinned Knuckles. Back when I worked all the time on my MGB.
Avatar 11:56pm Shaw:

Great show Little Danny! Thank you!
Avatar 11:56pm Franco Twinkie:

My friend Terry Cannon and his dad published Skinned Knuckles. Terry died a few months ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm coelacanth∅:

haha Danny it was comical in a way (even though my favorite guy there, Malcolm, was in the worst shape of everyone).
there were a lot of illegal aliens there and once in a while some guy would show up and they'd all scatter. the high school kids from the year before me that stayed on were on various pills all the time. the hispanic ladies all wore way-too-tight designer jeans, to work the drill presses in.
and they'd all make fun of you if you used protective gear.
Avatar 11:57pm Dano59:

also really loved hearing Malaguena! The Rev. Tom Frost did one of my next-fave versions of that.
Avatar 11:57pm Dano59:

Wow, thanks, Franco. Small world!
Avatar 11:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Danny.
