Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Brandon, have recently have seen you on bass with Gerald Cleaver on the Vision AFA concert streamcast, and then for a slice solo on the Bass for Peace FB election day Peace-a-thon. Have noticed you being very active in various folks gigs. Looking forward today hearing what you want to share with us.
  2:38pm Brandon L:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Dave Sewelson:

SUN BURNS OUT YOUR EYES
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm WR:

Ok, long track, I got time to write some things based on browsing bandcamp.

Never Not A Grave Digger. - any clue you can give old clueless guy about that?

Cecilia Lopez -any relation besides last name and sometimes performing together?

Santeria -something you grew up with or encountered as an adult?

Response during the next mic break is good. On not. It's your gig here today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm WR:

Man, on clear days recently, when I first get up and go to make tea, the sunlight is so bright coming through the kitchen window, blinding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm fred:

I was reminded of GY!BE at some point in that piece

Saw Cecil Taylor perform a few times. Always year more each time .
  4:05pm northguineahills:

Cecil!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm WR:

*Hear* more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm WR:

NGH! How goes it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Dave Sewelson:

ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Dave Sewelson:

Once heard Cecil at the Vanguard..just after he started .the guy in front of me turned around and said "Is he gonna play like this whole set?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm doctorjazz:

Cecil, cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Jeff Golick:

Always fun to guess the over/under on how many people would leave a Cecil gig in the first half hour.
  4:13pm northguineahills:

Sent my background check doc to my partner so she can edit it (I don’t have an Adobe license). I may have accidentally got a job, but I’ll find out next week. One more interview to go. Still living at a rest area.

Cecil always clears the cobwebs in my brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Jeff Golick:

That said, one's first live Cecil Taylor gig is a uniquely unmooring experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm WR:

Monk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm doctorjazz:

I told this before, but Cecil was the week's pick in the Times at a long gone Village club. The write up talked about how he was not as bombastic as he had been, but was mixing it up with softer dynamics. I got there, a line had formed around the block (as happens with a Times pick). I didn't think I'd get in, but I got on line, which was moving pretty quickly. What happened was Cecil indeed was varying dynamics, loud, soft, but he always played like Cecil... People came, listened, maybe waited a bit for the mellower music, then left. I got nice front row seats for 2 sets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm ParUbi:

Hello Dave and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm WR:

Have not heard this recording by Monk before . Love it!
  4:19pm northguineahills:

The first time I saw Cecil, was 2004 at Tonic. (Saw him two more times).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm doctorjazz:

NGA, good luck (I use 7-zip instead of Adobe, freeware)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Dave Sewelson:

ParUbi, welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm WR:

Sorta similar doctorjazz. Last time I saw Taylor, they wouldn't let me sit at a table since I was a single. Not too long into the 1st set I had a booth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Gina Bacon:

Digging this Monk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Dave Sewelson:

sorry to hear the job news, ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm fred:

I only saw Cecil once. He was supposed to perform with Amiri Baraka, but they had "creative differences" before the show and ended up performing separately. Memorable show anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm WR:

Somewhat ironically it was a gig where Taylor mostly did poetry and political education rap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Dave Sewelson:

I used to work at a place called Cheese Village, I sold Cecil Taylor a 1/4 pound of Emmenthaler
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Jeff Golick:

Two big cheeses!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm fred:

I since met someone who worked at the venue that night, who told me the argument got so heated they wondered if it came to blows, how would they separate a guy in his late seventies from one in his early eighties without either getting hurt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Gina Bacon:

Good luck, ngh! I hope all goes well for you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Dave Sewelson:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Gina Bacon:

Wow, fred. What a bill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm WR:

Fred, painfully funny to consider that incident /
moment.
  4:38pm northguineahills:

@dr jazz: my 7-zip stopped working. But my partner is getting a treasure trove of rekkids, and she is also unemployed, and volunteered.
  4:39pm DavidJ:

I remember a great Cecil show in the 80s at Carlos I in the village...two sets, five total audience members as I recall, including of course Steve Dalachinsky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Dave Sewelson:

DavidJ, of course
  4:40pm northguineahills:

As long as the lack of car insurance doesn’t come back to haunt me, I’m in (it’s remote, and pays really well for FL, like NYC pay rate good.)
  4:46pm northguineahills:

Ok, gonna get work done. Thanks Dave and friends (can’t see the homepage).
Avatar 4:48pm Sem:

Killin' show this pm, Dave. Loved the mix, Brandon Lopez !
See you and the freeworlders next time, with luck. Seeya.
