Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm fred:

Sorry, I had to take a break to listen to Wing's rendition of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", which is apparently only available in the WFMU archives
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Dave Sewelson:

  2:50pm John Parran:

TALK SOME....WHos in the quartet...if I was Angel I would alReady know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm coelacanth∅:

by your definition that was curated then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Dave Sewelson:

jim jim jim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Dave Sewelson:

JD, I thought I said the quartet is Lewis Porter piano, Francois Grillot Bass, Tom Cabrera, Drums and Matt Lavelle whatever he wants
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm coelacanth∅:

(except it couldn't possibly be contained in the smokehouse)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm fred:

We're back to lockdown over here. Huge blow to artists who were maybe seeing a way to make a living. Government responding in the worst way: bookshops asked to be allowed to open to survive the unfair advantage of Amazon and big retailers, so the sale of books is banned (except from Amazon and select online retailers)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm coelacanth∅:

your government needs to be exterminated, pest that it is...like ours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm fred:

@coel: I almost agree, my reluctance comes from the fact that the alternative is neo-nazis. The real deal. Which wouldn't help. The left here is controlled by a Trump-like figure who's even worse in that he's very rich and highly educated yet pretends he can't do grammar because he's poor. Condescending, but it works. We're doomed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm doctorjazz:

Hi folks! Great day, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm doctorjazz:

Loving the sounds!
Avatar 3:10pm Sem:

Hello, Dave, Mr. Bradford, and music for the free world stawarts.
Been along since the first, lovin' it all.
Avatar 3:12pm Sem:

*stalwarts* spelling on the fritz again, bah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm coelacanth∅:

fred that's a shame.
they just all need to be destroyed, one regime after another, until the power hungry people (aka politicians) understand that they have to be decent humans as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Dave Sewelson:

Sem and doctor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm fred:

@coel: that won't ever happen: power hungry people can't be decent. It would take us making it clear that power hungry people have no way to power, which isn't happening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm coelacanth∅:

hey dr.j and Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm coelacanth∅:

i know fred. you know the deal here. ronald whackdonald trump people could and will devolve to be even worse than they are now. the dems *could* evolve, as was happening in the 70s; but if that were to happen it wont be before extreme transformations on this planet; and by then it wont matter at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm fred:

@coel: they don't care, they'll be dead by then, which is a huge part of the problem of having a gerontocracy
  3:29pm John Parran:

send me the link for the conference.
I just got quack trip.

  3:36pm Matt lavelle:

Hey guys! Sounding great. Thanks for the plays too! 🎺
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm fred:

@coel: neither Biden nor Pelosi are exactly spring chickens. If AOC at least beats Schumer, maybe I'll have hope. Until then, not so much
  3:42pm northguineahills:

I’m actually good friends w/ Kevin Sheq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm coelacanth∅:

Biden's a right-wing democrat. same old shit, only it cyclically gets worse.
still though, a relative blessing.
we'll see how extensive the damage is by the time he's sworn in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm fred:

I hope that the heirs of Trane will survive this ordeal. It's challenging
Avatar 3:50pm Sem:

Hello! back to you, coel@ 3:23.

fred, good to see you here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm fred:

@coel: True: what a mountain of crap did it take to get us happy to hear Biden getting president
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm coelacanth∅:

well-put, fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm fred:

@Sem: I still carry around your recommendations from years ago. The way things go, I'm afraid that list will outlive bookstores
  3:55pm northguineahills:

True coel, but at least he will continue the social policies the Dems have evolved towards. Now, praying for a miracle in the two senate runoffs in GA.
Avatar 3:57pm Sem:

fred, by that time there'll be a Farenheit 451 underground group, with people who have memorized books and speak them on-demand. Maybe we could circulate the list, get the ball rolling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm coelacanth∅:

Sem i'll do that. what's the shortest book on the list?!
  3:58pm northguineahills:

I was at the point where I’d be happy w/ any president, GOP or otherwise. It’s going to take a generation to repair the damage, starting w/ international relations, domestic policy, well, you know everything. (My thumbs would give out if I listed everything).
Avatar 3:59pm Sem:

"The Wit and Wisdom of Donald Trump"
Avatar 4:00pm Sem:

Seriously, I don't have a copy of the list. I recall not too many short ones...
  4:01pm northguineahills:

Sam: soon to banned by the Geneva Convention as cruel and unusual punishment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm coelacanth∅:

right ngh -Biden will keep whatever's left of civil and environmental programs. a lot of it has to be started over, which takes a few years again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm coelacanth∅:

Sem i's kidding! i can remember the basic jist of and many details of books but i don't think my brain is designed to remember entire books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm fred:

@Sem: I was reading the Deptford Trilogy when the second lockdown hit. I didn't like Fifth Business, liked The Manticore, was halfway through World of Wonders, which I didn't like much, but made me appreciate Fifth Business more. I suspect these books should be read more than once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm coelacanth∅:

...though i guess if i had to i might be able to train that brain and remember little books like sidhartha or cat's cradle... or short stories
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm WR:

I hear that I connected in time for the rebop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm coelacanth∅:

what'd poor Kenny do?! (besides make vacuous music!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm fred:

@coel: So far I think the shortest was Selby's The Room. You might remember that one if you read it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm coelacanth∅:

don't know that fred should i add to my list?
  4:11pm John Parran:

eisenbeil?
  4:12pm northguineahills:

No! Not the DMG!
Avatar 4:13pm Sem:

Yes, fred, about the Robertson Davies books. Much to absorb.

Currently awaiting Volume 5 of Caro's Life of Lyndon Johnson. His election as senator from Texas filled one entire volume pretty much, Book 3, I think, and describes in detail how he stole an election. Nothing out of the ordinary, current US politics demonstrates that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Gina Bacon:

Hey, Dave, Angelo and all! Happy Saturday!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm fred:

@Coel: Depends on what you're after. Striking, but striking easy chords, especially later in the book. It works in a way though, but can get tiresome
Avatar 4:16pm Sem:

Hello, Gina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Gina Bacon:

Hey, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm fred:

For some reason, I have a really hard time reading when stuck home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm fred:

I hope my favorite bookshop (Canadian) will survive these lockdowns, but I don't think it will. Rent too damn high
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm WR:

So Dave, youse guys is using quack trip today? The jam came through really clear and balanced.
  4:23pm jimzeen:

Hey! Bruce, You catch this? I'm listening to you, Jim Ryan
Avatar 4:27pm Sem:

I feel your pain, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm fred:

The singer reminds me of Jen Shyu, who I sadly haven't seen in years
Avatar 4:30pm Jeff Moore:

It makes me smile that the state of the practical music collaboration art is apparently represented by things called Quacktrip andNetty McNetface.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Dave Sewelson:

WR we is using Zoom today...sometimes it works good..they is making it more better all the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Dave Sewelson:

Jeff! nice to hear you smile....
Avatar 4:33pm Jeff Moore:

True, they keep tweaking the Zoom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Dave Sewelson:

Gina!...I know you are ready....
Avatar 4:34pm Jeff Moore:

@Dave: right back atcha, Beardy McBeardface!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm fred:

Doh! According to discogs, it is Jen Shyu!
Dave, you should invite her on your show. I saw her do a wonderful solo show, playing several instruments and singing
  4:41pm DavidJ:

This is excellent as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Dave Sewelson:

will do fred.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm WR:

What, wait, Dave will take guest requests? Hmmmm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Dave Sewelson:

all requests are taken under advisement
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm fred:

She played piano, some Taiwanese instruments, but most mind-blowing to me a Timor one that was really close to one from Madagascar. I know some people from there, who didn't know a thing about a timor connection. Which way did that travel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, Dave! It's Lance Whalen this week!
  4:51pm DavidJ:

Personnel on that?
