Greetings everyone! Today's show - Singles Going Nowhere: 3 hours of cancelled or withdrawn singles. Record company meddling, lawsuits, artist tantrums and other assorted controversies have left a trail of "what ifs" throughout rock & roll history. We'll hear the best (or is it worst?) of them.

Wild Thing? Huh, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Nardo:

Hey Joe! Be sure to check out "The Odd Couple" 50th Anniversary Show on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast this week. I have a feeling you will enjoy that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Hughie Considine:

Loving this show, @Joe. I figured many of these singles would be super obscure, but most of them are super familiar (and faves).
Interesting thought, @Pantz. On a related note, I wonder if any singles were held back due to 9/11 -- obviously many songs were removed from playlists.
Avatar 12:35pm Joe B:

@hopey - agreed
Avatar 12:35pm Joe B:

thanks nardo - will do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm myron feld:

I think "Slow Motion" was co-written by Jimmy Destri and Laura Davis, the drummer from the Student Teachers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm patrick321:

"Cancelled due to success of call me" — if EMI had done that The Beatles wouldn't have had 5 or however many top ten (or 20?) singles at the same time.
Avatar 12:37pm Joe B:

@hughie. thanks. well, there are a bunch of those but the stories aren't as good. like, record label recorded garage band x, decided not to release it because they are nobodies. end of story. but there may be some of those as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm James in ATL:

  12:38pm andy the painter:

flushing sure beats brushing!!
  12:39pm PJ:

Is this a different mix of Inoculated City?
Avatar 12:39pm Roberto:

Foolish 2000 Flushes! This would have been free advertising for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Phillippe Bastille:

If I had a nickle for every time I was confused, I'd be like "Why do I have this nickle? And why do I have all these other nickles?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I remember this 2000 flushes thing. Haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Gaylord Fields:

@patrick321: That wasn't actually EMI's doing — in the UK the Beatles had a strict release schedule (approx. one sigle every three months). What happened in the US was purely a cash grab by the three labels (VJ/Tollie, Swan, Capitol) who had the rights to Beatles product released during the entirety of 1963 all being re-released in early 1964.
  12:42pm Tim from LH:

Now I’ve got to dig out my two copies of Combat Rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm mariano:

Hey there Joe B, Crew, everyone.
Avatar 12:42pm Roberto:

I watched American Gigolo on whatever premium movie channel we had back in the early '80s. Snooooooozefest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Is it true that American Gigolo was based on the true adventures of Todd-O-Phonic Todd?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm patrick321:

Thanks Gaylord — as I writing my comment I was thinking to myself that you would correct my probable misunderstanding of that phenomenon! . ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Gaylord Fields:

@patrick321: Come for Joe B's brilliant programming, stay for my Beatles pedantry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm David (in London):

Hey Mariano. Howdy pal.

Avatar 12:48pm Joe B:

hey cheryl!
Avatar 12:48pm Joe B:

hey luka! hey bloumejune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Hughie Considine:

The brawny bass of the Move apparently had its affect on Black Sabbath.
Avatar 12:49pm Joe B:

i guess singles going nowhere can apply to the move's entire career in the US
Avatar 12:50pm Roberto:

Let me guess, was Young Man's Blues canceled due to the F-bomb?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Cal Zone!:

Engineered by Vic Maile! Ya hear me, EFD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm efd:

I wonder if "Ella James" might show up on a future Joe McGasko "People That You Know" show.
Avatar 12:50pm Joe B:

actually no
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm tim from champaign (now washington):

The Who out blues rocked the big name blues rockers with Young Man Blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Gaylord Fields:

@Roberto: Gotta figure they'd do a radio edit, as was the custom at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm mariano:

'Sup, David - and there's Handy!

I remember when "American Gigolo" came out, I was around 11. The grownups seemed to go completely apeshit over it and men started trying to emulate Richard Gere's look. At least it yielded a great Blondie song.
Avatar 12:51pm Joe B:

referring to young man's blues f bomb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I found a mint copy of the Leeds record a couple of years ago (w/poster and everything). Much prefer it to the expanded version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm efd:

@Cal this LP is already on my list for next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Cal Zone!:

You are on top of the 'Mailestrum', EFD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm mariano:

I used to wear out my "Live at Leeds" cassette. Does it still hold the record for loudest concert? I think it did for a while at least.
  12:52pm prudy:

Live at Leeds one of best live recordings
Avatar 12:52pm Roberto:

I recall radio edits being less common in the '70s and '80s. I think "Who Are You" was often aired in its entirety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm efd:

A prime example of the genius of Vic Maile. (Not to distract from the topic at hand!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Frank In Queens:

This set speaks to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm David (in London):

Good general Giorgio Moroder soundtrack for American Gigolo, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm efd:

by the late '70s some curses showed up on album rock stations (Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner" is one example) but they were still edited out on most top 40 and other singles-based stations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm David (in London):

I tried out for an English Gigolo, but there wasn't much call for that sort of thing in late 70s rural Oxfordshire villages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Gaylord Fields:

@Roberto: This is 1970, and a proposed single — no f-word would ever be released, and it could possibly lose about a minute of its time.
Avatar 12:55pm Joe B:

the young man's blues 45 is 4:45. not sure what was supposed to be the a side
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I think American Gigolo is a good movie. Paul Schrader is one of the greats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@efd: "Funky kicks going down in the city," indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener monica:

PS I recommend watching The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm McGroovey:

Always loved this fast version of "Tell the Truth"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Mike Sin:

Joe, man, your themes for your shows this month have been fantastic! This is another great show for a geek like myself!
Avatar 1:00pm Joe B:

thanks Mike!
Avatar 1:00pm Joe B:

i'm sure i'll need some correcting when reading back this set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm myron feld:

This much faster version of "Tell The Truth" tops the slower one. This has got to be the fastest tempo song Clapton ever recorded.
  1:01pm PJ:

I watched American Gigolo in the past year, and I have to agree with some of the other comments - it's really dull. Doesn't help that Gere acts like he's brain dead throughout the movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Hughie Considine:

Clapton seems to be one of the most retrospectively reviled huge musical act from the classical rock era, due to his racist remarks. Steely Dan also seems to get a lot of hate, but only for their fussy production.
  1:03pm P-90:

Well that was a hell of a segue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I saw Clapton on the Backless tour. Opening act was Muddy Waters. Muddy smoked him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Mike Sin:

re: "Tell the Truth" -- For the BeatlesGeeks out there -- this version was recorded during the sessions for Harrison's "All Things Must Pass." That LP and sessions were really the impetus for the formation of Derek and the Dominoes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm pantz:

Looks like Mike Love ain't so loved either. I never met a farmer in my home state that didn't have a little patch of "hemp".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm nickybones:

i love this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm tim from champaign (now washington):

They don't call it loco weed for nothing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm mariano:

Lol, David (@12:544). That would make a great satire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Handy Haversack:

David, Mariano, greetings, gents! Samosas and sex for money all around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm myron feld:

@Mike Sin: thank you, did not know that!
  1:05pm egould310:

Sounds like a tune from “A Mighty Wind”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Mister Dobalina:

Reefer madness.
Avatar 1:09pm SmokinJ:

This 'bud's for you FFA! 8-)
  1:10pm PJ:

@Hughie: I wasn't around then, but it seems like Clapton got a lot of praise in the 60's (and I like almost all of his Yardbirds/Cream/Derek & the D's stuff), but since then, everything he's put out is pretty uninspired. I imagine that has brought down his rep as much as his racism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Hughie Considine:

I think you're right, @PJ -- the bland music is certainly a major component. What a comedown though. I mean, kids used to scrawl "Clapton is God" when he was at his height.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Threemoons:

Well, shit, my temp gig came to a sudden end...BUT...we still have to dial back in tomorrow AM just to wrap things up so no sleeping in. Meh. I wish weed was legal in New York right about now. If NJ gets it, the PATH train is gonna stand for "Pass After Taking Hit." I swear I can't stand this crap anymore. Between losing what was supposed to be a "real" job back in July (it was shitshow, no tears), my "Plan C" temping drying up, and pain in my left knee/leg from a fall in the kitchen, I am just so over it. I want to make an entire pitcher of Swimming Pool cocktails, toke up, and play Borderlands 3 until after the election.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm David (in London):

Clapton's soundtrack to 'Edge of Darkness' is also excellent. That said, it too was a long time ago now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Threemoons:

At least I already voted, and New York State has a 4-hour minimum law now; ie you show up for what is supposed to be at least 8 hours they can't send you home after only an hour without giving you 4 hours pay.
Avatar 1:16pm Joe B:

sorry to hear threemoons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Threemoons:

@Joe B thank you....I know that this hasn't been a party for EVERYONE, but I felt the need to vent...
  1:17pm PJ:

I remember hearing "Leave My Kitten" on commercial FM radio sometime in the 80's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Gaylord Fields:

The real question is why "Leave My Kitten Alone" was left in the vault in the first place! It's miles above all the other cover versions on Beatles for Sale!
Avatar 1:18pm Woo:

Absolutely! @Gaylord Fields
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Threemoons:

Any Bowie coming up in this mix? IIRC there were a few cut items from Diamond Dogs. Of course, one could argue that ALL of Tin Machine SHOULD have been cut but whatevs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Hughie Considine:

Indeed. What a powerhouse vocal by John here.
Avatar 1:18pm Joe B:

bowie coming up in the next set
  1:19pm PJ:

@Gaylord: You're right. And they left "Mr. Moonlight" on. I guess they were more fond of the original versions of the songs than "Leave My Kitten".
Avatar 1:19pm Joe B:

gaylord, was just reading that kitten was almost going to come out in 1980 also but plans scrapped after, well, you know ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Threemoons:

Yay! Thanks for the headsup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Little Danny:

Heya Joe, hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Hughie Considine:

Good point, @PJ. I know I'm not alone in disliking "Mr. Moonlight" more than any other Beatles song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Mike Sin:

re: "Leave My Kitten Alone"
For those in the NYC-area at the time -- Jimmy Fink and Scott Muni were playing this track quite a lot (for tightly programmed FM stations at the time) trying to get a jump/scoop on what that they thought was going a major Beatles' release at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm pantz:

Tin Machine gets a bad rap, IMHO. I really like the first album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Hang in there, Threemoons. It's Ok to vent for sure. SOmetimes things just straight up suck. Hang in there though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Hughie Considine:

I only saw Bowie live once, with Tin Machine, and it was still great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe B: Yeah, "That Boy John" Part 2.
Avatar 1:21pm Woo:

They should re-release Kitten now. For today's youngsters. I like Mr. Moonlight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I also actually like that first Tim Machine album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Handy Haversack:

Oof, Threemoons, very sorry to hear it. It is no fair that the shit sandwich we are consistently served also turns out to have a bone in it. Wishing you relaxation and strong drinks.
  1:24pm John L:

I have to imagine that there was a scrapped Kinks single or two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm tim from champaign (now washington):

How is Living in The Material World as a whole?
Avatar 1:25pm Joe B:

@tim - side one is great, peters out rather quickly after that
Avatar 1:25pm Hackensack Slim:

Sounding Good Joe. I am in the pro-Mr Moonlight camp.(Beatles 65 1st album owned)
Avatar 1:26pm Joe B:

john l - at least 1 i'll be playing today
  1:26pm PJ:

@John L: IIRC, there were a lot of scrapped Kinks and Dave Davies singles in the late 60s
Avatar 1:26pm Joe B:

hey hackensack slim! thanks
Avatar 1:26pm Joe B:

hey handy! thanks for being here
Avatar 1:27pm Joe B:

yeah if there is a sequel to this show there will be a full set of kinks kontroversies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Hughie Considine:

This glorious cover ended up on Wild Life. There's a gorgeous moment when Paul's voice hits a rough patch on "money in the hand..." I always listen for it.
Avatar 1:28pm Joe B:

the rare paul vocal fry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If we're lucky, Barry Manilow can write the Covidcabana song and his record company can withdraw it by 3:00 PM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Handy Haversack:

There's nowhere else I want to be, Joe! Though I am afraid we have to make a supply run soon. Vermouth levels dangerously low!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Little Danny:

Avatar 1:29pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Handy Haversack:

SPOX! I ... think?
Swag For Life Member 1:31pm tadpoles:

The great Sparks! Was released as a single in the UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm David (in London):

I love Sparks, but this is frightful.
  1:31pm PJ:

@Gaylord: speaking of aborted albums, Neil Young and Prince must have some scrapped singles, too
  1:31pm MikeDeeThrillSergeant:

Really fun show Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm pantz:

Yikes! This one deserves to be on the scrap pile. Like Tiny Tim covering Neil Sedaka
Avatar 1:31pm Joe B:

was this ever actually release?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Hughie Considine:

Huge Sparks fan here, but I think I'll stick with Al Green's cover.
  1:31pm PJ:

@Joe B: Yeah, this arrangement is terrible. Marianne couldn't have saved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Twilley's Shark in The Dark single that Hozac resissued a while back is a good cancelled single.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Handy Haversack:

Gotta run, consarnit. Hope to make it back before the end. There are no mistakes on 3CM! Thanks, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Phillippe Bastille:

This would be a great song for a Covid-era hand sanitizer commercial
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm mariano:

See ya, Handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Sparks and Marianne Faithfull? Oh wow! That would have added a lot to this cover.
  1:33pm MFlynn:

Joe, loved that Beatles set, particularly the great Harrison song from “Living in the Material World”. Really love that and haven’t heard it in years. Thank you!!
  1:33pm KWilde:

Never heard that Sparks. They did better with Do Re Mi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Gaylord Fields:

Sparks/Marianne would have been the most interesting high-singing man/low-singing woman duet since "I Got You Babe"!
Swag For Life Member 1:34pm tadpoles:

I actually love that Sparks' version. ... true to Sparks cheekiness.
  1:35pm KWilde:

Russell Soprano Marianne Tenor
Avatar 1:37pm Woo:

Right on Joe. Those saxophones. I think they were going for the L.A. sound.
Avatar 1:37pm Michael Shelley:

Gotta agree re: saxes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm myron feld:

It's that horrible Tom Scott sound.
Avatar 1:39pm Joe B:

i think it actually is tom scott. though i did like his schaefer beer commercial
Avatar 1:39pm V Priceless:

super show, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Cal Zone!:

Mike Shelley wants MORE SAXES! THE MORE THE MERRIER! Long noodling, pointless, sax solos! MAKE SAXES GREAT AGAIN!
Avatar 1:40pm Joe B:

hey MFlynn! thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm tim from champaign (now washington):

This is a Michael Shelley #1 hit record if I ever heard one.
  1:40pm PJ:

Good tune from Badfinger - was this released on an album?
  1:40pm Bill D:

Know doubt in my mind Don't Make Me Wait Too Long would have shot to number one.
Avatar 1:41pm Woo:

Or...maybe the solo Beatles were enamored of Bobby Keys sax for the Stones and thought it would be a good idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Hughie Considine:

Bobby Keys' work had an edge to it. I don't think it ever sounded so smooth and cloying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Gaylord Fields:

@PJ: It was released (briefly) on the final Badfinger Mk 1 album Wish You Were Here (which was recalled several weeks after its release).
  1:43pm Frank Zaatar:

A propos of That Boy John: Any chance of getting a set of more singles canceled because of current events (e.g. national tragedies, songs that make fun of people who die just before the release date, etc.)?
Avatar 1:44pm Joe B:

well leave my kitten alone was posisble going to come out in late 1980 ...
Avatar 1:44pm Joe B:

  1:46pm pgalub:

Hey Joe! Great show! Crazy to hear this tune w/o piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Hughie Considine:

Let's not forget Vaughan Meader's entire career...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Little Danny:

@Hughie: "smooth and cloying" is a great descriptor of that sound.
Avatar 1:46pm Woo:

Bobby Keys played sax on Whatever Gets You Through The Night. I don't mind that one so much but I'm also not crazy about it.
Avatar 1:46pm Joe B:

hey pete! yeah agreed!
Avatar 1:47pm Roberto:

Whoa
  1:47pm BillD:

I always felt Wish You Were Here was a really fine album. Leave it up to WB to screw things up! One of their best tracks ever recorded was Know One Knows It on that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm pantz:

Feels like Rocky Horror stole this whole arrangement for half of their songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Cal Zone!:

Xmas Bop should have def been a big hit! Who was the dunce who pulled the release of this gem!?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Frank Zaatar:

@Hughie: Yeah, I was thinking of Vaughn Meader.
Avatar 1:48pm Joe B:

bolan is the one i think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Cmurtha:

I'd say something about it not being Halloween yet, but this BOPS so I'll just groove.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Hughie Considine:

Bolan sure did love that basic four-chord early rock sequence...
Avatar 1:50pm V Priceless:

abowie!
  1:50pm John L:

I could be wrong, but I think Lennon might be the only Beatle not to use Tom Scott. Yeah, sax has put a damper on some good tunes .An idea for theme show: Post 60's songs that have a sax on it but don't suck. Umm, I almost dozed off while writing typing that, so never mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Threemoons:

@John L: before you doze off, Roxy Music
Avatar 1:52pm V Priceless:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Threemoons:

You know, I vaguely remember having a 45 of this Bowie song. IIRC it was in the book-style thing of singles with pictures on each record. It's somewhere in my Mom's house. It came out in the 80's; the most recent single in it was from Scary Monsters. It MAY even be signed, in which case it's probably worth something. I have to remind myself to look for it the next time I'm over there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm David (in London):

I think The Stooges' 'Funhouse' constitutes the correct use of sax.
Avatar 1:53pm Joe B:

@david - exactly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Mike Sin:

re: "Whatever Gets You Through the Night"
The whole "Saturday Night Live" band sound was invented a year before that show premiered! All that's missing is Don Pardo! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Threemoons:

HOLY CRAP one is going for $600 smackers on eBay!
  1:54pm PJ:

@John L: Bowie actually uses sax well on the Spiders stuff
Avatar 1:54pm Joe B:

to be clear, i was referring specifically to solo beatles not utilizing sax effectively, and repeatedly
Avatar 1:55pm Joe B:

another current event cancellation ... 1994
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Mike Sin:

re: sax on Lennon solo tracks
To me, a lot of the sax on Lennon's "Some Time in NYC" LP sounds like a car horn blaring in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Threemoons:

www.ebay.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Gaylord Fields:

I can't think of any solo Beatles sax I enjoy. At best it's forgettable; at worst it takes away from the songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Michele with One "L":

Yay Nirvana!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Hughie Considine:

I'd say that brass on "Savoy Truffle" works really well texturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Gaylord Fields:

I guess this Nirvana song kinda counts as a death-related cancellation.
  1:58pm David in London:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Gaylord Fields:

@Hughie: Lotsa very good horns on Beatles records; Joe is referring to post-60s solo Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Gaylord Fields:

And sax solos specifically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Threemoons:

I like this Nirvana track.
  1:59pm John L:

Roxy, of course. I know there are others, of course. It's just a bad sax solo seems to spoil good songs. It happened a lot on 70's singer/songwriter albums and it was usually Tom Scott, David Sanborne or a Brecker Brother.
  1:59pm PJ:

@Gaylord: I wasn't there, but I'd guess George Martin's influence on arrangements of non-guitar/bass/drums/vocals stuff for the Beatles was pretty significant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm paddy in matawan:

Thanks, @Gaylord. I lost my focus there for a sec. And I've recently discovered your show and I am now a fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm paddy in matawan:

Me neither Tim. Interesting take. Wonder if that's what they wanted to convey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Gaylord Fields:

@Hughie Considine: Thanks! But listen next week, and I may change your mind. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Hughie Considine:

Now I'm intrigued.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Gaylord Fields:

Avatar 2:07pm Joe non Papa:

I don't know if it fits the format of this show but Napoleon XIII's "They're Coming to Take Me Away" was a big hit on top-40 radio in the mid-60s when it was suddenly pulled from airplay due to complaints from mental health care workers (or so I've heard). I didn't hear that song again for years.
  2:08pm Bambi Kino HQ:

Brian Jones played some tasty sax with the Fabs on "You Know My Name Look Up the Number."
  2:08pm John L:

That scene was filmed for High Fidelity and cut out. It's an extra on the DVD. I totally agree. Maybe that's why they cut it out of the final print.
  2:08pm Joe Melillo:

Scrupled record dealer?...Nah
Avatar 2:09pm Joe B:

@joe - yes it would fit! never knew that! will get it in if there is a sequel to this show!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Baja Joe:

I think it goes without saying, Otis Redding could sing the dictionary and it would sound amazing. There. I said it. Same goes for JB. I said it again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Now with James Brown, whatever was pulled was probably in favor of something equally as great. But this song is pretty damn incredible.

I can't think a label with more incredible music that was cancelled/unreleased/re-recorded/withdrawn/handled inscrutably/etc. than Motown.

Joe: this is an incredible set. I know I'm joining the chorus, but damn, this is just excellence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Gaylord Fields:

Avatar 2:37pm Joe B:

man, i got about 40 songs here that i can't get to. might have to do a sequel
  2:38pm John L:

Is there a good book on the history of Motown, one that covers both the good and bad sides of the label? I could Google that kind of info, but I trust WFMU listeners for a more nuanced opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm tim from champaign (now washington):

DO the Mynah Birds show up on any Neil Young collections?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm karlward:

I'm wondering if the Big Star "Thirteen" 45 (mislabeled as "Don't Lie to Me") counts as a single going nowhere. Did Ardent ever release the single as ADA-2904, or was it a radio station promo only?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Joe - did you get in on the pre-order for the Archives II box set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Little Danny:

@Gaylord: Truly. I've gone on record before basically to posit that no label had more per-song unreleased goodness in its vaults.
  2:42pm (another) Patrick in Hoboken:

Really enjoying the Motown/R&B section
Avatar 2:44pm Joe B:

as gaylord said, probably enough for an entire motown show! thaks patrick

Henny! So great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Joe - that's a good idea waiting for the standard edition. I'm going to save up for it but it will probably sold out by the time I get the scratch together.
