A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Heidee, heute bin ich gut gelaunt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am WoodsOfNH:

@YETI BOB I tried that run-multiple computers with one keyboard and mouse software. Couldn't get it to work dang it. I blame Windows 10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Handy Haversack:

Doug, it was long but tending toward pretty. I hadn't driven *quite* that long at a stretch in a little while.

Heidee, hello! I missed your greeting during WAB!

Woods, we are in Penobscot, about 12 miles from Blue Hill. Canoe should be here in an hour! We're hoping for a pond and a bay today!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Handy Haversack:

I think it's the only day the tides line up for an afternoon paddle on the bay, too, Woods.

But we have cool-weather paddling gear. We're here for canoeing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am WoodsOfNH:

@YETI BOB So then I tried something called Share Mouse. That _did_ work and it was easy to configure. But...the one window that I use a lot on the Windows box is an Oracle Virtualbox (running Linux). The mouse would not capture that window. Friggin' technology!!
Avatar 9:12am Woo:

@YETI BOB, what neighborhood are you in? I though the stores on the Mag Mile were still boarded but I may be ill-informed. I've been to the city once in the last 6 months. On the plus side, when you visit Chicago now, weed is legal.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am !:

Time to teach until early evening. Good bye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am YETI BOB:

@Woo: I'm near Noble Square in West Town. Wicker Park, Logan Square, and other "cool" neighborhoods have very few boarded up windows - a couple here and there but most of it came down after the protests. I don't spend a lot of time on the Mag Mile but I believe most of the boards have come down there too, I'm not sure. I do think the news media sensationalizes things like this. I'll take a bike ride this afternoon and have a look around. I'll report back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am deborah:

Time to teach until early evening. Good bye
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Handy Haversack:

A moral question - Not An AMORAL QUESTION...
a spider moved in to our house 3 months ago....
we have named her Bertha (gender unknown)
We have almost no flying insects as Biz is shut down
in Madrid... When I do the midnight recycling , I take an Olive Jar
and capture wee bugs to feed Bertha.
Is That horrible...?????????????????? I think no but I always have a small sad
quam feeling [Is Quam a word??? It is now]... I eat cheese and eggs and dead animals if they appear on a plate and I can kill fish and eat them but I feel sorry for the wee bugs????? Not Catholic guilt.....
No professional psychs need respond.... just the Regular - IR-regular listener!!
appear on the plate..
Ps wee 9 year old Simon tagged/labeled the jar "Bertha's Lunch Box."
Children are stupendous when not atrocious!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Doug in JC:

@morphe - I spritz my house spiders with water to keep them hydrated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Lewis:

It does seem more complicated teaching on line this go round - I too struggle with why this is so...
  9:36am Morphe':

Handy - NanNook of the North... (good doc) ... quiet paddling sounds great!!!! took Simon to Alicante the other day for a super polluting Medeterranian Speed boat ride ....... #300 Horsepower ... He said it was the best day of his life!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does Mr Pipes ride the kayak???

I'm a fellow teacher struggling with anxiety and I turn to your show (and WFMU) for solace!!! Thank you for what you do!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Lewis:

the syntax of that last post mirrors my confusion with my class...
Avatar 9:37am Heidee:

@jdaAndAnouk @9:10 - That's a good guess, she looks like one in this picture because you can only see her head. If you saw the body, different kettle of fish! Ailsa is a Whippet-Bedlington mix and looks like a small version of a Scottish Deerhound. :-)
Avatar 9:38am Ajay from Krommenie / NL:

yay Prana Crafter! William Sol is so talented!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am YETI BOB:

@morphe': The word is qualm. And that's a great question. Every summer I plant flowers to attract bees. A few days ago I noticed a HUGE spiderweb that was strung between the flowerpots and a tree about 8 feet away. I've been watching all the bugs that get caught. And yesterday, there was a bee in the web! One of the bees I was trying to attract. So I removed the spider nest - it seemed somehow like this setup was unfair to the bees, a trap. But how about the spider whose web I wrecked? A real moral question. Then I realized - this is actually part of what it means to be human. Making decisions like this. Deciding what is a weed and what is "desirable". In fact, it's like playing God, deciding who lives and who dies. It's quite a burden and I'm sure we don't always get it right! But you have to make decisions like this anyhow, every day - there's no getting around it, if you live in the world. You play God every day. Just try to be a kind and merciful God, I guess ... Well, the web reappeared the next day, actually. Identical location & construction. Spiders are amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am WoodsOfNH:

@Trouble Speaking of Portishead, have you heard the recording of Beth Gibbons doing Gorecki's Symphony No. 3? Pretty amazing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am listener james from westwood:

Portishead is what I need on this gloomy day, perhaps paradoxically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am YETI BOB:

@morphe': Also Nanook of the North is considered to be kind of problematic - a lot of the scenes were staged, and it portrays Inuit as somewhat less than human.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am listener james from westwood:

This album stands fully up after ~26 years.

@Doug in JC: Ok, Jersey City is now officially on our list. There used to be a restaurant in Burlington, VT that rocked my socks, but it's long gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Trouble:

here is a chart with each state and their early voting dates:

Thanks, Trouble. That might just be the most useful chart ever.

@Doug - Too bad it closed. I checked the map and the place I visited was on Greene Street, between Montgomery & York Streets.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug in JC:

@Trouble Wasn't there *supposed* to be a new restaurant there? The story of what happened was horrible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Webhamster Henry:

I just dropped some home made toffee in my tea.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Ike:

We only *recently* got early voting in New York. Why did it take until 2019 to get that passed? Because in 2018 we *organized* and voted out Cuomo's pet Republicans etc. from the state Senate. Then Cuomo had no choice but to pass early voting and other progressive legislation, which he either illicitly hated or didn't care about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am WoodsOfNH:

There's an Indian & Sri Lanken restaurant in Ellsworth, ME that makes mind-blowing food. Serendib. I had an Indian friend up here one time and she said it was the best stuff she'd had since coming to this country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am YETI BOB:

@Hubig: Caffè corretto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Webhamster Henry:

There's a really good Indian restaurant in Rhinebeck, Cinnamon, that I hope is still open.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am redbee:

@Yeti: I'm not a coffee drinker (can't handle so much caffeine) but I would occasionally splurge on a maple latte from a local cafe. Such an incredible combo of flavors!

Trouble! Good morning from smoky Portland. Every week your show is something I look forward too. (For at least 8+ years). I rarely get to listen live and I just discovered I can chat with you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Trouble:

@ douginJC i don't know this story. I just know i walked by and saw a new restaurant, but i haven't walked by there since march.

Hey, a daytime Polyglot today, for Fabio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Yes:

hey all. does anyone have experience with acl surgery with older dogs? wondering if still active , if it is the way to go vs conservative treatments
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Ike:

Oh yeah! Polyglot is excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am WoodsOfNH:

@Yes A few years back our aging cocker spaniel had a torn ACL. Our vet just recommended reduced activity (no jumping up on the couch/bad/using the stairs) for a couple of weeks. The early reduced activity was managed with some slow-the-doggy-down medication. And it really worked!

The vet said he liked this approach because surgery success for this was not great.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Trouble:

i am going to you first: all mighty listeners who know all. question: is replacing a battery on an older apple macbook a difficult thang? do i have to take it in to be serviced? can i do it at home? does apple frown on this?
Avatar 11:31am dougseidel:

my son did a replacement like that - use youtube tutorial for help - was very satisfying for him!
Avatar 11:32am Rev. Turnip Druid:

I believe Apple frowns on anything that isn't buying-new-everything-all-the-time. Alas.
  11:32am oscarfate:

check out ifixit.com - the buck stops there for this kinda thing
  11:32am @sag:

@Trouble: if only there were a world wide, free database of text and video one could query for the answer.

hello from Baltimore. long time listener first time commenter
Avatar 11:33am Tofu Kills People:

Trouble, I recall replacing a battery on my MacBook Pro a few years back and it was pretty easy.
Avatar 11:33am Pale Son:

@Trouble Depends on the model/year of the MacBook. www.howtogeek.com...
Avatar 11:34am Rev. Turnip Druid:

[salutes vaguely east-northeast, towards the great city of Ballamo]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am YETI BOB:

@Trouble: If it's old enough, the battery pops out with no tools. Otherwise you need to remove a few screws, you might need a special screwdriver. IMO it's totally worth it to keep older machines going (it's green, for one thing). It's probably out of warranty already so I don't think Apple cares what you do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Trouble:

thanks@oscarfate: and welcome aboard the mighty comments ship wfmu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am WoodsOfNH:

@Trouble I had the battery replaced on my 10 yr old Macbook Pro. Had it done at an independent computer store. Of course, I did it because it wasn't holding a charge for a very long time....and the replacement didn't help. Wah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am YETI BOB:

I'd replace it for you, if I were nearby! (Anything to keep WFMU on the air)
Avatar 11:36am βrian:

@WoodsOfNH: "Oh, you wanted a *new* battery?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Webhamster Henry:

@Trouble again, depends on the model. really old ones (2012) still had removable batteries, mine(2014!) it's glued in so it's a spit in the eye of right-to-repair people. It can be done by have with a kit from IFixit, but you have to be technologically fearless and a heat gun would help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Trouble:

i had an older mac book that a friend gave me b/c it wasn't holding a charge, and i used it only for music to bring to wfmu, plugging it in while using it. this macbook was a hand me down from my son when he got a new one for college. i don't need a laptop, since we have a desktop, but this show would not be running at present if it wasn't for that hand me down laptop, whose battery is dying faster then it used to.
  11:37am kpx:

Hi trouble: may I make an appeal to your fellow DJ on your chat board?. no worries if not.
Avatar 11:37am Pale Son:

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself if it's not the popout kind of battery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Trouble:

sure @ kpx: that's why we are here...
  11:39am gwtg:

It depends on what year it was made. My 2010 was not complicated. I would go to iFixit.com and look up your model.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug in JC:

@Pale Son why not? A lot of computer stuff is easily DIY, even an apple product
Avatar 11:41am Pale Son:

@Doug Because it is very easily DIY if it's the popout kind, very not if not. They made it purposely hard for users to do themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Trouble:

thanks for all this info peeps! mine is a 2012, or 13, so i will look into all of your suggestions! can't afford a new one and i'm into the more green option to hold on to it
  11:41am Lucky:

I forgot that Ronald Bell of Kool and the Gang died last week. Such a great group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug in JC:

@Pale Son it's some screws and a ribbon cable. Though I suppose we all have different concepts of what is DIY and what is not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am YETI BOB:

@oscarfate: I knew I recognized your name but it took me a minute to place it. 2666! Bolaño!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug in JC:

@Trouble Very possibly this one. I'm in the same boat but I don't have anywhere to take my macbook so I'm fine with just plugging it in www.ifixit.com...

Re:MacBook I just totally did this on a mid2012 MacBook it cost me like $16 for the little tools to open the thing up ,and $30 for a new battery ....VERY easy ! Good luck!
