(and bummed that this was never taught in the schools i went to, which were *supposed* to be among the best public schools in NJ -- same goes for Chile's September 11th, i was in junior high when that happened! but not even in "Current Events")

ngh: True. All of Central America was part of Mexico for a time, then it was a federation of states till the usual infighting and factionalism put an end to that idea. Iirc, at one point there was the possibility of Chiapas being the sixth Central-American nation. Much like Yonkers almost became the sixth borough. Ok, don't tell anyone I called Chiapas the Yonkers of Central America or I'm likely to incur the wrath of Subcomandante Marcos ;)

@mariano: My wife designed a tee-shirt she gave a way at the Mexican consulate protests (against the Mexi gov't), that used the the Ramones logo as a template. She used Ramaona, the "minister of educatation' of the zapatistas in Chiapas in the 90s. She put Ramona in a mask and traditional dress holding a paint brush and a pencil. She'll give you one for free.

have known him for (yikes!) 45+ years -- born and raised and lived in Yonkers for many years -- like many "older" cities, was in really sad shape (i realized this even BEFORE one had to file Yonkers City taxes if living and/or working in Yonkers) -- and now, of course, it is going through gentrification -- we joke about a neighborhood loosely known as South Yonkers is now being sold as "SoYo"

SoYo, hah! Wouldn't put it past them. For a while, developers were trying to brand Boerum Hill-Cobble Hill-Carroll Gardens as BoCoCa. With Yonkers, the way I read it was that in 1898 all the prospective boroughs had to vote on whether to become part of the City of New York, and Yonkers was the only one that voted against. Would make more sense for Yonkers to be in the city instead of SI in terms of the geography.

and i did NOT know that Yonkers was originally considered as a borough of NYC! but yeah, makes WAY more sense than Staten Island -- again, more jokes about how it really should be part of NJ, "The Garbage State" (hey, it DOES have that huge garbage dump!)
