Ready to rock steady, Mr. Sullivan.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Gary:

I'm a bit of a literalist, I'm afraid, haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm doctorjazz:

Used to frequent Danceteria, The Mudd Club, The Pyramid Club, those joints back in the day. Sigh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm listener james from westwood:

Blows my mind that all those exciting places and this music were flowering just across the river, and I was just too young to partake by like a decade. WFMU has filled in massive amounts of what I missed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm doctorjazz:

Pretty sure I saw Liquid Liquid in one of those venues.
Avatar 3:33pm Really Lisa:

Danceteria dirty stay-out here. It all began w/my big sister's ID, and her name necklace! Foolproof in the days before photo ID :)
Saw The Buzzcocks there; usually surrounded by people dressed, coiffed and made up like Boy George.
Hi Gary and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Gary:

Really jealous, Really Lisa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm chresti:

This Suicide is great.
  3:40pm spodiodi:

hi Gary! hi everyone else too!
Avatar 3:41pm Really Lisa:

*Edit.. may have been Limelight where I saw the Buzzcocks. :-/ Mixup could be due to current age, or what I was smoking back then. Those two, plus The Ritz, were my go-to places, with my bridge and tunnel pals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Gary:

Spodiodi!
Avatar 3:45pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Hi Gary & danceteria crowd. I am absolutely not a clubgoer type of person - not to mention I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO NEW YORK!!! - it is just that the music is so good, for instance that Suicide track (which is an underrated gem in their catalogue)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Gary:

gary, shouldn't worry about when the sounds were distributed / released. If it was made at that time, it is of that time.
Avatar 3:51pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

from what I have read Madonna was surprisingly much involved in the more alternative side of things - dating Michael Gira and apparently in the audience during the Mudd Club gig of Whitehouse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Gary:

AND you can see full video of her first time in front of an audience as Madonna -- at Danceteria (search YouTube) singing this very song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Bas NL:

23 Skidoo!!! I got this 12'', masterwork.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Gary:

Lucky you! It's pretty dancetastic
Avatar 3:54pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

wasn't the 'Into The Groove' scene from Desperately seeking Susan' also shot at Danceteria?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Gary:

Ohhhh, yes, I think so!

Avatar 4:31pm βrian:

Boy, this brings back memories of the King!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm chresti:

Saw Ade at the Greek in LA, around 83 or 84.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Gary:

βrian! me too -- my memory is of listening to this in the livingroom of an apartment in San Francisco, mid-1980s, Sunset District, 19th Ave, if I'm remembering correctly. The apartment was semi famous because 19th ave was also highway 101 and Brent, my roommate (whose record this was) had a GIANT RCA Victor dog that he parked perpetually in the window. Everyone knew that place
4:34pm Keith Chegwin Threw A Teabag At Me:

this Ade is blastin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Bas NL:

Chresti, you lucky.. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Doug Schulkind:

Along with his regular Wednesday Bodega Pop Live, and the Sunday Solid Foundation show, today's Drummer Stream Discotheque means Gary is doing 10 hours of live radio this week.

I could get used to this!!!
4:37pm Keith Chegwin Threw A Teabag At Me:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Charlie:

4:39pm Keith Chegwin Threw A Teabag At Me:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Gary:

Charlie! I walked into a record store in Park Slope in the 1990s and this was playing and I said "Can I get this?" I didn't know him before that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Charlie:

I've bought so many albums that were playing in stores I'd walked into!
4:42pm Keith Chegwin Threw A Teabag At Me:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm listener james from westwood:

I'd have worried if we hadn't heard from Grace!
Avatar 4:54pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Charlie. Until 2 years ago, I had to use Google Earth Pro for my random hobby maps, now there's ArcGIS Online. Unfortunately, I no longer a production licesnse for it. (I got a free Google Earth Pro license 6 years ago as an early adaptor, so, I still have that) That article is well put together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Gary:

This cassette changed my life! Hey there, NGH!
Avatar 5:00pm northguineahills:

Funny, there are maps in the article, and yet, since it's NYC, I'm picturing the addresses in my brain until I realize I can use the map...

  5:14pm wendy del formaggio:

Thanks for the record store map, Charlie. I think I’ve been to 5 of those stores. Some were still there in the 90s and mid-00s. I went to Rocks in Your Head once, I think in 1987, where I picked up a copy of LCD!
5:17pm Keith Chegwin Threw A Teabag At Me:

You can bag a copy of this banger on discogs for 4 grand
5:17pm Keith Chegwin Threw A Teabag At Me:

could i get u down to a grand, gary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Charlie:

Yay LCD! I was trying to remember which store on W 8th St I heard Public Enemy's "Rebel Without a Pause" spinning and had to buy it on the spot (it was Venus Records, the one on the second floor).
  5:22pm wendy del formaggio:

Yay LCD! It was right after I discovered WFMU on the radio, so I considered it a message from the universe.

I got my vinyl copy of the NY Dolls LP for $1.99 at Venus’s basement in 1992 or so. It was when everyone was switching to CDs and ditching their vinyl. But not me!
  5:24pm otto:

Bumpin' it up in the Adirondacks!!! Thanks!!!

I also totally scored at the Princeton Record Exchange around then. Basically all the Talking Heads & Steely Dan LPs I wanted for 99-cents each!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Charlie:

Wow, Wendy. When I lived near Princeton in the early 80s I got almost the whole P-Funk catalog there, and also many albums of Stravinsky conducting his works (I was obsessed with both at that time).
5:36pm Keith Chegwin Threw A Teabag At Me:

this is all bangin'
  5:38pm wendy del formaggio:

Yay Zulu Nation! I love how closely they trade lines — sometimes single words — in this song. So tight.

Hearing all this music and chatting with y’all makes me wish we could dance together, as in, in the same room. But, conditions being what they are, this is the best we’re gonna get. And it’s pretty effin’ great. Thank you, Gary.

I was working in Brownsville when Rappers Delight came out. A record store across the street blasted it all day, every day, for weeks and weeks. Needless to say, that bass line is etched in my brain!

Thanks, Gary!

Still remember hearing Rappers' Delight the first time on the radio as a kid and thinking, Can they really DO that? This song is immense! Just riveting.
