@MrPumpy: True. But while in Brooklyn today I saw a guy socially distanced 3 stories up on a building and doing wolf whistles to anybody/everybody/everything that passed by. Made me laugh at the corny “Hey, I’m trapped at home and this is how I entertain myself…” idea this guy had.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am spodiodi:

JakeGould, that made me laugh earlier ("... at everyone! .. dogs.") lol
  12:08am JakeGould:

@Spodiodi: Yup! I was sitting down eating tacos and just constantly hearing “Wooo… Wooo!” and saw it. Best idea ever!

just got home, walking from Jersey City Heights -- never experienced Jersey City or Hoboken so unbelievably quiet and desolate -- i kinda like it!

Avatar 1:26am slugluv1313:

@ Fox -- right?
was talking with a friend about this earlier, how no-one from the States will be able to go to other countries

also, how apparently a bunch of the people partying over Memorial Day weekend (in Missouri, i think? i remember seeing the crowds, just do not recall exactly where they were) are *now* testing positive for COVID-19
Avatar 1:27am ToTetsu:

@fox isn't that part of the whole deficiency of ideologies that produce inequality? We're connected, and if you let some people be in endemically bad situations, then it's going to come back around to be bad for everyone.
Avatar 1:29am Fox:

ToTetsu: Yeah, that's why, for the life of me, I don't understand why the overclass doesn't just do the bare minimum to keep the middle class happy. All this shit was happening in the 90's, but nobody cared, because the white middle class was content. It's in the 1%'s best interest to keep us happy. Crushing us like this is how guillotines happen.
Avatar 1:30am Fox:

Not that I'm anywhere near middle class.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am mariano:

Yeah, always had you figured for a 1%er, Fox.

@ Fox -- yes, surely that "let them eat cake!" attitude is not only alive but thriving
Avatar 1:37am Fox:

I suppose therein lies the difference between the parties. One is at least smart enough to placate the masses with the bare minimum.
Avatar 1:40am ToTetsu:

My FB feed is telling me that "bad faith actors" are purposely escalating the violence of protests. .. With the pandemic of information warfare also raging on, .. I wonder what the right response in these times is to systems of politics and society ignoring a large group of peoples needs and anger.. Protest, and demonstrations are what we all know.. but it seems like there should be another way..
  1:40am rw:

Evening! Checking in and back out again. Thanks sv. Beautiful radio for this weird moment. Take care everyone. Stay safe and do the best you can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41am CarolCrow:

That's the thing, Fox - the corporatocracy needs us to consume their shitty products. So just pay us off and let's get to consumin'. Well, at least it made sense the other night after a toke.
  1:43am BH:

Wonder what the venn diagram looks like for "people showing up around protests" and "people who have lost their jobs since mid-March". The April unemployment rate ages 20-24 is 26%

Avatar 1:44am Fox:

I have been personally quite livid at NJ deciding to let Food Stamps be used online (finally!) but only allowing Walmart, Amazon, Shop Rite, and some other company I've never heard of to do so.

What little money I have to spend into the economy is forced into the hands of these neo robber barons. Fuckers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am CarolCrow:

Avatar 1:44am Fox:

Even my poverty and hunger is monetized by corporate dragons, hoarding gold beyond reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am mariano:

There's this weird American mentality that if someone's on food stamps, they should be punished and not be allowed to get nice things. It's like "Next time don't be so poor."
Avatar 1:46am Fox:

Right. This is EXACTLY the circumstances to lead people into the streets. What else do they have to do? they are jobless, and that 1200 doesn't go very far, not it NYC at least.
Avatar 1:46am ToTetsu:

@mariano relevant sarah silverman show clip
Avatar 1:47am Fox:

mariano- Yup. Im hoping that the economic doom tsunami that will crash over America will give people a kinder outlook on things like food stamps and other benefits, and the people who use them.
  1:49am BH:

the April percentages by age
16-19: 32% (34% unemployment if you're 18-19)
20-24: 26%
25-34: 14.5%

So the age demos that probably always lose their jobs first lost their jobs first. Which when you add the possible POV about which age groups are effected the most by current pandemics...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50am mariano:

ToTetsu: Haha, funny clip! "Rotation phones".

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am spodiodi:

already justified in my mind with that fact, and that this is a public place ;) (don't think i didn't think of YOU FIRST ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am spodiodi:

i'm guilty of: typing too much, and butting in to other conversations :-B among other things *ahem*
Avatar 1:56am slugluv1313:

same here, Fox -- LAST place i want to use my food stamps is at Amazon, etc.
i worked at a welfare agency from 2005 to 2010 -- many applicants had had decent jobs, never thought they would have to apply for any sort of public assistance -- thankfully not elitist about it or anything, but totally lost, clueless . . . so constantly hearing unemployment numbers going up higher and higher, i can only imagine what this is all going to look like in a couple of years
  1:58am BH:

also, when it comes to certain checks.. I'd think the higher percentages of people who don't qualify for those checks are younger?
  1:58am JakeGould:

Just on Twitter and learned that looting and fires are happening in Washington D.C. and there are mobs of looters in SoHo all over the place.
Looters are not protestors and the protests ended hours ago. Pretty confident that whoever is out there right now in SoHo had nothing to do with the protests that happened across the city today.
Avatar 1:59am slugluv1313:

and kinder, empathetic is right!
when i worked there, SO many of the employees treated the applicants like they were criminals or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59am chresti:

Thanks sv, good night everyone!
Avatar 2:06am Fox:

Y'know what? I don't care anymore who is looting and who is protesting. It's probably instigators. But maybe it's not. Maybe it's the people who don't give a fuck about peaceful protests and they are angry and they are fed up and this is how that manifests. Regardless, the entire situation has been brought to this crisis point from the same tributaries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06am spodiodi:

night, chresti
Avatar 2:07am Fox:

Goodnight, chresti!
Avatar 2:12am RabidRabbit:

@Fox 100%. Regardless, any riot is always the fault of the government structures...it means that they have mismanaged the people's concerns and allowed the pressure to build up.
  2:20am JakeGould:

Unless the looters are white kids (seems like it) slumming and riding in on the coattails of the suffering of non-whites.
It’s become a major problem at all the protests that white kids are riding in and causing property damage in the name of black people making peaceful protestors (mostly black) and their communities bigger targets.
If you care about what happened to George Floyd you should be concerned about white kids slumming in violence for their own kicks.
The job of white people at protests is to hold space and support non-whites because white people have entitlement and privilege to buffer it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20am mariano:

Haha spodi! Sorry, didn't realize I'd been away from the keyboard for so long. Even the minutes go by faster when you're old!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21am mariano:

Night chresti.
Avatar 2:21am slugluv1313:

@ Fox and RabidRabbit -- yes (remembering the riots in the 1960s)
  2:25am BH:

if we're assembling a profile for white people who get arrested for their "activities" at protests, the guy arrested in Nashville for setting a fire at the courthouse was a 25yo wearing a Deadpool tshirt in his twitter perp walk pic.

Sorry, Deadpool fans who are good people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27am mariano:

Huh, didn't know this: the Richie Havens song "Klansman" (Jeff played it earlier) was written by Alan Arkin and his father David.
Avatar 2:28am Fox:

Jake - Yeah, that's a good point. I hear it from both sides, though. Some think that blaming the violence and looting on instigators takes the teeth and righteous anger out of the protest itself, and helps perpetuate the status quo. Others think that the violence is ruining the movement for change.

Sure, cops are definitely trying to get things ugly and turn things into a riot so they can crush it, and leftist angry white people need to step back and realize they have NOTHING compared to the issues black america has with the police. But at the same time.... *shrug* how long can nothing change in the face of murder? How long can we know that white supremacists are targeting the police for their ideology and do nothing about it? I can't judge the destruction.
Avatar 2:29am Fox:

mariano - ooooh! That reminds me! I have to find and watch Catch My Soul, a Richie Havens musical of Othello, direted by Patrick McGoohan. I've been on a huge McGoohan kick again recently.
  2:30am BH:

from what i'm reading, i'm not sure if PDs like using tear gas more or pepper spray

I think cities handled a pandemic better than the stuff that they usually have to do, which is a bit of a "priorities" thing?
  2:32am JakeGould:

If you have not been at any of these recent protests you honestly have utterly no right to judge the reactions of people who have been there. I only went to one today.
I know others who have been at protests in the past few days and the pattern is clear: The protestors who are peaceful are truly not connected to the rioters and looters.
And many people out there have problems differentiating they two will just blame the peaceful protestors for actions they do not condone, do not support and will put them in danger. The black community will suffer because white kids want to cosplay and live action role play what pain and outrage mean.
Anyway good night people.

Fox: wait, what now? A Richie friggin' Havens adaptation of Othello directed by The Prisoner? How did I not learn about this in 51 years?

re: instigators, fake protestors, etc. -- i have heard all sorts of stories, how the KKK, alt-right groups, etc., are sending in "their" people to protests so they can start shit -- so a peaceful protest gets violent, and makes the protestors look bad to all those suburbanites "tsk tsk"-ing in front of their TVs . . . and then of course random jerks who want to "start a riot" not because they support a cause, but because they think it is "fun" and maybe they will get on TV

then you gotta wonder about law enforcement deliberately planting undercover people . . . this was a huge caution years ago, when we (animal rights activists) were considered the number one terrorist threat in the country -- and it continues now; a friend in Oakland posted a statement that if one is going to any of the protests, be sure that you are with friends or groups who you know and trust

@Fox: “I can't judge the destruction.” Because you utterly miss the point. You are not black and neither am I. And we both have life baggage but even with that baggage we still have privilege.
Even in our mutual worst days/states we are inherently at a better position in the world than than anyone at any level in the black community and to just shrug it off as “both sides” only future shines the light in the fact that neither of us would ever be targets in the same way as a black protestor will be.
I honestly don’t care one bit about luxury stores being looted. Property is not important than life. But I do care about peaceful protestors potentially being harmed by the implied actions of others supposedly “acting on their behalf.”

Jake: Dude. I am saying, I am not there. I am not witness. I am seeing and hearing different accounts by people who ARE there. As such, I do not know conclusively what is going on. It's not all shitty white people doing the looting and instigating. But since I do not know, and I am not black, I am not going to judge what is going on.

Please don't lecture me about my white privilege, man. I don't need that shit explained to me.

Thank you for your most excellent effort this morning.

@Fox: “I am saying, I am not there. I am not witness.” I have been at today’s protest I. Brooklyn. I did so for the reasons you explain. My friends were at the protests yesterday and today. One was specifically at the NYPD SUV rundown on Flatbush and Saint Marks. Another saw NYPD instigation. And my own ideas about agitators are not wildly generic; it is simply based on what I — and others at these protest — have seen.
All I said to begin with is simply looting is happening in SoHo and Washington, D.C. That’s it.
Holding space is of value. Sorry for the multiple “Byes!” but seriously.
