"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

  9:04am David in London:

Hey p20, Earth Walker, Jake, Lix Life.

So glad someone finally realized what an incredible groove this piece of crap song has.

The world is going to hell, so 3 hours of a "Dirty Laundry" loop to finish us off?

  9:06am The Butterman:

Apparently I look like some guy named Don who lives in the next town. For years people would come up to me and say “Hey Don!”
  9:07am David in London:

Hey Handy.

Don Felder, it doesn’t surprise me given your general awesomeness.

Avatar 9:08am PKNY:

@Felder - don't test Nathaniel Hornblower about Stars Wars credit. If he'll interrupt Michael Stipe, he'll surely step to you.

Hello JA in The AM, hello Clay and all the beautiful people.
  9:09am David in London:

Handy. It’s a beaut. Was supposed to be at that Kraftwerk and Iggy gig right now, but I’ll settle for JA in the AM in the garden in the sunshine... How’s you?
  9:09am Jeannine from Weehawken:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am p20:

ok. just set a timer for 11 minutes. see you guys then.
  9:11am JakeGould:

One trend I have noticed on WFMU and around social media as of late: People defending “uncool” music and art… So far my count of those defenses includes: Hall & Oates, Eddie Money and even Eddie Murphy’s pop music output.

It’s like everyone is saying, “I’m stuck at home, life sucks but dammit I can’t hide my feels on these tracks/artists!”

Also, I think “Dirty Laundry” was the first track I ever requested a DJ play back when it was hot on WNEW here in NYC. So terrifying to call up a radio station and ask for something and then getting it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

Looping most foul.
Avatar 9:11am Nelo:

:D
Avatar 9:12am Itzall Hear:

p20, pretty sure I'm with you on that one.
  9:12am JakeGould:

@KenfromHydePark: What about a weekly detective show about a DJ who tracks down musical crimes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am efd:

@Jake some of us have been defending Eddie Money for years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am karlward:

I hope this is the extended remix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am karlward:

Rolnick life
  9:12am JakeGould:

@efd: Ditto! And respect.
  9:13am Don Felder:

Is this the end of Sgt Pepper?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Handy Haversack:

David, Kate was going to have a gig tonight a little ways out of the city in Croton, so we're missing that. But things are OK. Some physical labor coming up tomorrow might have us back on the water soon, which is cool. Gonna try to play some remote poker tonight with friends and see how it goes -- might have to miss part of Sheila's show for it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Jake - That was Cop Rock, wasn't it?
Avatar 9:15am Rev. Turnip Druid:

sup
  9:15am JakeGould:

@KenfromHydePark: No! Those were cops who sang about being cops. I am talking about someone with deep music knowledge — like Gaylord Fields — being a cop who solves crimes via their musical knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am steveo:

hey John & Everyone.

Wait; Hall & Oates isn't cool?
Avatar 9:16am Malcolm:

Hi JA and listeners. i love operating theatre. One of their 12 inches was produced by Bono, in one of his only services to music
  9:17am ami ad:

@JakeGould:Hey.I'm with you on that.Jay Z/Beyonce...Beatles,no need to support mainstream on wfmu.I also noticed a lot of Big Tech endorsements and such,google,zoom,bandcamp...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jim the Poet:

Looking forward to the show. And the weekend!
  9:19am JakeGould:

@AmiAd: I think you are reading that wrong but whatever… How is your very expensive home grown lettuce doing?
  9:21am JakeGould:

@JimthePoet: So you’re going to sit around this house with a bit of weekend swag?
Avatar 9:21am Blobs:

JA breakin out the flame thrower this morning, thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am karlward:

This sounds like "Thriller" got mugged by Panda Bear, and I like it.
  9:22am ami ad:

@JakeGould:Whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am p20:

modular synth is a lot more fun to play than it is to listen to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am WoodsOfNH:

@p20 I tried to dig into max/msp but man, the learning curve is nearly vertical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am p20:

WoodsOfNH: Synth software is hard to learn. But analog modular is just plugging in wires. It's about as hard to learn as LEGO
  9:28am JakeGould:

@p20: I hate the “interfaces” on synth apps. Audio apps have the worst interfaces ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am p20:

@JakeGould: Agree
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am WoodsOfNH:

@p20 Yeah. I got to play with a mini-Moog one time. That was fun, even if I had no idea what I was doing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am p20:

@Woods: I have a background in math and signal processing so the Max/MSP stuff sort of makes sense to me. But I'd never say it was "fun" in the same way a MiniMoog is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am WoodsOfNH:

@JakeGould Yep. I recently started playing around with a synth programming environment called 'Chuck.' Super-powerful and all text. Right up my alley (with a background in software)
  9:31am JakeGould:

When this Coronavirus stuff started, Moog made their basic Moog keyboard app available for free on iOS. Loading it onto my iPhone or iPad mini just makes me get stressed and it should be a simple app… And I work with and develop software myself!

@WoodsofNH: Whoa! Sounds cool. I find the command line to be the great equalizer. chuck.cs.princeton.edu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am p20:

(installs Chuck)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am p20:

saw Bob Ostertag perform with Fred Frith at the Public Access Synthesizer Space sometime in 198x. Literally changed my life, turned my interests from (post)punk to pure experimental.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am p20:

ostertag had this rig using 3 reel-to-reel tape machines with variable speed. tape ran from machine A through machine B to machine C. In between the machines, the tape ran through gold rings suspended by helium balloons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am p20:

frith was banging away on his tabletop instruments and ostertag was manipulating the tapes. as the speed changed, the amount of slack between the machines changed and the balloons went up and down. and PASS had very high ceilings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am steveo:

quick, matt, hit the cough button
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am p20:

probably 35 years ago but i remember it like yesterday. one of the best things i ever saw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am WoodsOfNH:

@p20 There's an IDE for Chuck called miniAudicle. I sort of hate environments like that but it's useful to browse through all of the Chuck features, modules, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am p20:

possibly side 1 of this record: www.discogs.com...
(unless that was a different PASS show)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Mister Dobalina:

I see we've gotten to the meat of the matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Laura in Peekskill:

FINE YOUNGSTERS
  9:42am doctorrock:

Blew my Stimulus Check on a load of No Trend records... so what, shut up.
  9:43am !:

what can you possibly follow with... on the edge of my chair...
  9:44am !:

Ha! Carry on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Laura in Peekskill:

This song is like a Venn diagram of post-punk and new wave.
  9:50am !:

@ Laura check the haircuts to confirm?
Avatar 9:51am Itzall Hear:

Little know trivia: the "secret" vocalist on this track "Adjust to red" is none other than Mick Jaeger! I mean, that's what I heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Laura in Peekskill:

I'm pretty clear on new wave hair, but what does post-punk hair look like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Laura in Peekskill:

@Itz You mean Mick Jaeger, the singer in the Rolling Tones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am p20:

Did I slip a day in time? Is this Ken's show?
  9:54am JakeGould:

Release the bats! Release the bats!
Avatar 9:54am tak:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am p20:

i want to turn it off but i can't. have to see what happens next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Handy Haversack:

Ken's show was Ira. Maybe Ken, Ira, and JA all got within 1 NRu and broke time, p20. We all knew it was a risk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Mister Dobalina:

Ken was on later the same day with Andy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Mister Dobalina:

He was playing hop scotch with Andy and giving away $100.
Avatar 9:57am Itzall Hear:

Yes, Laura, the very same girl. I'll fact check that on the internet, but it seems pretty obvious to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Handy Haversack:

Not sure that can disprove time's being broken, though, Mister Dobalina.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Mister Dobalina:

This is true, Handy, this is true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Crudbringer:

p20 has become unstuck in time.
Avatar 10:01am Lixiviated Life:

I'm envisioning an old wash tub turned upside down, a two x four perpendicular to the bottom of the tub and a single string from the top of the two by four to the washtub.

Out 'em, Jake. They shouldn't be throwing out good food. They should give it to a food bank or something similar.
Avatar 11:41am coelacanth∅:

people who throw out good food should be thrown out.

Weak Signal is coming on strong! At first I thought it was a cut from the new "X" record, which I have not heard but understand it's pretty great.

Hey there coelacanth!! Its always fun to see your name on here! (Even though I don't know how you get your little doohickey at the end)

@common: I’m making my own cafe au lait for coffee. Mainly because I use a 3 cup stovetop espresso maker and it’s the best way to fill a cup with 50% coffee and 50% milk.

@crudbringer fresh sumac! excellent. i’m envious. tabouli with riced cauliflower is a nice change. also make it with quinoa.

@common:I've been practicing the Eat Tomorrow Diet for a long long time. Not convinced a person who sits most of the day needs that 2000 cals or even a busy person really.

my neighbor offered me 2 "family-sized" frozen meals over the weekend. one mac & cheese and something with chicken. i said i don't want them but i know people who would. then they said they have tons of canned chick peas
- i'll eat that! they were going to throw it out.

@Carmichael: Out who and where? I live in NYC. This happens regularly. Me “outting” them is — at best — like saying the sky is blue; at worst makes me seem like the neighborhood rat. It’s simply better to figure out how to get that stuff to good use though other channels. Like organized dumpster diving groups and mutual aid groups and such.

coelcantho:When Roger Waters had a show in Israel,it was next to a Village called Neve Shalom (Peace Oasis),the show was outside where a Chickpea field was.

Thought, this is nice... googled it... dang.... thanks...
  11:53am JakeGould:

Also, I won’t get deeply into how public officials operate outside of the — predominantly — gentrified areas in NYC, but it’s simply better to deal with things on your own constructively rather than be “tagged” as someone making noise but with no way to really affect change.

We had neighbors in our bldg. who left town and asked us to deal with a food shipment. Their parents had subscribed them to one of these "all the ingredients are in the box, just follow the directions" dealies. It was nightmarish. The produce was so bad. Every bit was individually wrapped in plastic. The sauces were just like individual plastic packets of Kikoman, Tabasco, other national brands. And there was so much packaging. We were shocked.

I often feel like a yokel in the actual regular world that I live in.

Wise words, JakeGould. Everyone can do SOMETHING, but no one should do it solely for the attention and/or "drama" involved.

ami i considered growing chick peas one year...then i though that's stupid! i have (had) ~1200 square feet how fast am i going to go through a tiny crop of chick peas?! waste of space.
but i did grow other legumes that i don't consume as much of. beautiful plants, beautiful flowers on them.
  11:57am JakeGould:

@Handy: Those services are amazingly bad and speak to people who have never simply gone, “Hey! I’ll spend $20 on new foods at the supermarket and learn something on my own!” The exact target market is someone’s fretting parents “worried” about their grown adult children not eating well way into their 20s.
