This 1973 video of Kraftwerk is pretty amazing. Not really synth heavy and Florian is playing a flute. Plus some homemade electronics. www.youtube.com...

Good morning Matt and everyone.

I was a little late; I gather that no remote-Clay duet was attempted? Sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am melinda:

I didn't know about flute Kraftwerk until recently.
  9:21am JakeGould:

@melinda: “I had studied seriously up to a certain level, then I found it boring; I looked for other things, I found that the flute was too limiting... Soon I bought a microphone, then loudspeakers, then an echo, then a synthesizer. Much later I threw the flute away; it was a sort of process.” en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 9:22am p20:

This is a more interesting side of Kraftwerk for me. The later, robotic shtick kinda bores me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am David (in London):

I think my favourite early 'werk is the Bremen Radio session (K4) from 1971. Ralf had gone off in a huff and so it was Florian with Dinger and Rother. It's so stonkingly heavy in places.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am coelacanth∅:

good morning Matt and refuse aficionados
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am WoodsOfNH:

@p20 Same here. I was always more of a Tangerine Dream person but I'm really digging this stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am David (in London):

Hey Coela and steveo.
  9:23am JakeGould:

I will say I find it funny that Florian finally had creative issues with Ralf after 38 years of performing and left the group in 2008. Now that is a marriage failure success!
Swag For Life Member 9:25am 12539:

Flutewerk!
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 9:25am Crudbringer:

Morning everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am melinda:

I could listen to this all morning.
  9:25am JakeGould:

@p20: It’s like Tangerine Dream went off and doubled-down on the path early Kraftwerk were going down and Kraftwerk just said, “Ehhh… Prog, schmog… We want to stiffly dance!”
Avatar 9:26am Lixiviated Life:

Hullo Matt

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am coelacanth∅:

hey David (iL)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am melinda:

"We want to stiffly dance!" is a mighty rallying cry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am David (in London):

When I play the flute, grown adults weep.
  9:30am JakeGould:

Honestly, better than Tangerine Dream that just noodled with synths and made soundtracks remixing the same stuff over and over again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Rtintera:

@melinda agreed. I have been digging all the Kraftwerk lately.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am WoodsOfNH:

@melida Aren't kid musical instrument stories fun? I wanted to play trombone, but my arms were too small. Then I tried oboe, but could only make frightened duck noises.
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 9:32am Brian C.:

I was thrilled to have caught a Kraftwerk show in Philly a few years back, even if only 1/4 of the classic lineup was there. Was so worth the drive down and back, even with heavy rain both ways
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am David (in London):

Handy, my neighbour signals his encouragement by banging loudly on the wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am coelacanth∅:

p20 (@9.22) i mostly agree; but after autobahn, which was the last evolutionary link still substantially organic in instrumentation, a friend played man-machine and europe express for me and insisted i borrow them and make tapes of them, which i did.
it took a long time time but i did grow to love them, mostly.
but the 3 albums after those i never got into.
  9:34am JakeGould:

The thing about Kraftwerk is they can just tour with Ralf in a wheelchair and all of the robots on stage with him controlling the MIDI and it would still be great!
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 9:34am p20:

Oh what a perfect segue! Bajas!

(Also, I love this music, thanks!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am melinda:

Why did a group with this sound choose to call themselves Bitchin Bajas? For laffs I guess.
  9:36am JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: Ralf and Florian, Autobahn, Radio-Activity, Trans-Europe Express, Computer World and Tour de France are really their best work. One can debate the really early stuff, but the later stuff past 1991 kinda stinks other than Tour de France.
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 9:36am Handy Haversack:

Assume throes of joy and transports of bliss, David.

melinda: Cooper Crain plays synth in this band and he's produced a lot of records (Ryley Walker, etc). Defintiely an odd sense of humor. He used to have a band called WarHammer48K
  9:38am JakeGould:

@karlward: They are kinda two sides of the same coin if you think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am melinda:

@p20 I really like everything I've heard of them, it's just a name I would associate with an embarrassing party band or something along those lines.
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 9:41am p20:

@melinda: They are amazingly good, their live shows are trance-inducing.
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 9:42am p20:

@melinda: Cooper Crain: Musician originally from Columbia, Missouri, that relocated to Chicago and is notable for participating in groups such as Wise Or Otherwise, Citizen Pain, The I Love You But I'm Not In Love With Yous, AKA Darryl Rodenburg, Bin Laden Youth, Warhammer 48k, The One Inch Punch, Bitchin Bajas, and Cave. (Those are some great but bizarre names IMO)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am WoodsOfNH:

@JakeGould I know what you mean about Tangerine Dream but their mid-70's stuff is what I go to: Phaedra, Stratosfear, Rubycon. Love the synth/stratocaster combo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am WoodsOfNH:

Olivia convince me on the Anadol yesterday. It went right to my Bandcamp list.
  9:46am JakeGould:

@WoodsOfNH: I got into them in high school after buying a copy of the “Risky Business” soundtrack from Saint Mark’s Sounds back in the day for $3 or something. I was into Rush and Pink Floyd (Roger Waters stuff) at the time as well. Doesn’t age well for me; sorry. Prog is mind opening since it’s the one “weird” music you can listen to when growing up in closed-minded areas; the second you get out of that world you realize it’s… Meh. Stoner chamber music.

And the broadcast delay is just about 7 seconds right, through the wires then speed of light from transmitter to antenna. How quickly does a signal travel through a wire?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am ParUbi:

7 second delay being the intentional buffer (bad word) delay, I realize
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am coelacanth∅:

vlc must have a buffer

Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 10:04am Handy Haversack:

I usually have the FM radio going in the bathroom and the pop-up player on the laptop at the other end of the railroad apt. The delay varies but can be pretty severe sometimes.

Also, 91.1 has been coming in super well the past few days. Usually we can't get it at all in north Brooklyn and use 91.9. No clue why these things vary, whether it's our end, the transmitter, sunspots, whatever it might be.
Avatar 10:05am Aquebogue:

@Handy Sounds like an FMU haven!

Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 10:07am Asheville Jon:

what is this "shower" you speak of?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am David (in London):

I can't imagine being able to listen to FMU on my (car) radio. It's probably for the best, though, as then I would literally never stop listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am WoodsOfNH:

I had this show on one time on my phone upstairs while painting. It was still on downstairs on the Internet radio. I could hear the delay between the two so when there was a mic break I got to hear Matt's cackling laugh twice. Very entertaining.
Avatar Garbaggio Tastemaker Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 10:08am Handy Haversack:

@Aquebogue: Tubes, wires, and prayers! The radio in the bathroom usually can get the signal only on the back of the toilet, with the antenna in contact with the metal shelf. Make sure it is outdoors, roof mounted, or in the attic. Most roof antennas will give you radio reception similar to a car radio, or often better. Try re-purposing a TV antenna you already have; use an FM splitter to use it on your radio.

Avatar 10:19am Rocky Horror:

I listen to WFMU via the ROKU version of the TuneIn app. I have a ROKU Ultra and the remote has a 3.5mm heatphone out jack and i connect a headphone to RCA cable between the remote and a RCA switchbox. The switchbox is connected to a Logitech X-240 2.1 speaker system. The station sounds great on it.
  10:19am JakeGould:

The problem with roof mounted antennas is the same as drying your clothes on a clothesline in NYC: It used to be anyone could do that but many buildings have leases that stipulate you can’t do that.

Except there is this ex-cop in my building who is good with the building owners so there is literally ONE antenna on the roof: A CB antenna so he can bullshit with the same people he talks to in front of the building but via CB… And his antenna is power boosted so I can’t own a turntable else his stupid crap leaks into the audio.

Anyway…

My TV antenna is a wire hanger supporting a speaker wire jammed onto the pin of a co-ax that runs into the digital converter box (purchased with a govt. coupon!). This works surprisingly well, but most TV channels are on the Empire State Building, which we have a clear LOS to from here. There's a lot of Manhattan between us and East Orange!

But the stereo in the bedroom needs a wire FM antenna and loop. If I could find one of those, maybe ... ?

just now tuning in....sorry i missed the terrestrial reception discussion. one of my favorite topics!
note to North Brooklyners: it’s mostly the bulk of Midtown Manhattan that interferes with the line-of-sight transmission from East Orange, apparently. Tivoli radios are the best receivers i’ve ever used to pick up 91.1. they work when others don’t. i just found a digital Sangean in a thrift shop and it works well, too. you still have to play around and move the unit and it’s antennae around to see what works best. my daily struggle to pick up 91.1 on my hi-fi in ridgewood, queens involves a complicated dance with the speaker wire antennae, paintings on the wall, houseplants, acoustic guitars, and couch pillows. switch the receiver to MONO....mono signals travel further.
sometimes i give up and listen on line...stereo, but not the....presence?

@Jake Gould back when it was still a full-service electronics store I bought a computer chess set that told you where the computer wanted to move and you moved the piece (no screens involved). So much fun.

Started watching that film "Threads" . . The opening scene with a spider pulling a web-thread from it's body (excellent close-up) and then cutting from a shot of droplets on the thread to a shot of an electrical line pole-junction . . Rather memorable.
I fucking DARE someone to post a poem by Gregory Corso . .

Damn you Phillippe, is this the famous Yankee entrepreneurialism I've heard so much about? My quaint rustic English ways are no match for your cunning modern salesmanship.

@DiL small business owner just trying to make an honest buck. What's not to like?

Speaking of shipping, Amazon seems to be throwing in the towel on having some items returned. I bought a picture frame for my bride and it arrived with broken glass (clearly broken before it was pack, as there wasn't enough broken pieces in the box to fill the frame). I asked for a return shipping label and instead they credited my account and told me to keep it. Same thing happened with my wife when a bowl she ordered arrived chipped. It was glass as well, so maybe they don't want to have to deal with a box with broken glass in it.

  11:29am JakeGould:

@PhillippeBastille: Nobody anywhere is accepting returns anymore unless it is a big ticket item. Too much hassle and you have to expose workers to opening stuff and potential exposure to COVID-19. This is true with some items on Amazon as well as pretty much every supermarket I know in Brooklyn.

Ever deal with OCD people who return stuff? It’s a disease. Endlessly waste time and resources. Better just give them credit or just deny a return or refund when there are more important things to deal with nowadays.

Phillippe - Today a small business, tomorrow a global behemoth like Handy's spork empire or Crudbringer's crudR.

iiibeat - Never mention a film called 'Threads' to a British person of a certain age...

Tom - Nice sound for sure, but I'm not sure the trade embargo against French goods from the Napoleonic War has been lifted yet.

  11:40am Vesuvio’s Pizza (since 1981):

Hi Pat,

I see you are up to your tired, crude ways once again, terrorizing the WFMU chat forums in an attempt to draw attention to your (admittedly) once-great cheesesteaks. Unfortunately, your chants have grown as weak as your grease-ridden, floppy pies, caked in intractable “cheese” and glorified catsup.

Listeners, if you would like to enjoy a slice of real, high-quality pizza, head over to Vesuvio’s Pizza (1305 Beaver Dam Road. Point Pleasant, NJ 08742). Situated in historic downtown amongst breweries, community parks and various cultural landmarks, our pizzeria is home to one of the finest examples of sfincione (“Sicilian Pizza”). Here at Vesuvio’s we’d be nothing without “u.”
