good evening from LA, digging this jam
Avatar 10:15pm
Eiderdown:

Never heard of it til now...it's a jammer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Uncle Michael:

There are so many better "jam bands" these days than back in say, The Wetlands days. All these players that were children back then are just nailing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Mr. Pumpy:

Uncle...I hear you. I don't really consider a lot of things as jam bands any longer...but I get what you mean. No names...but I got so tired of certain bands that crawled out of the 90s. Aping each other an whatnot. There is more variety and meat on the bone these days. My opinion at least.

You have to play from your heart!!!
  10:22pm
Jeff Conklin:

The bands now are better because they’re pulling from a wider range of source material. A band like Garcia People’s don’t come from a classic rock banckground and it’s for the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Mr. Pumpy:

Can anyone sell me on Umphrey's McGee? I saw them at the Wetlands in the 90s, opening for Project/Object...and yeah, cool. Good opening act that I thought was headed somewhere. Every other time I attempted I just couldn't dig. I mean it, maybe I'm looking at the wrong stuff. I don't think so though, for me it is just where an artist is coming from, and they didn't seem to be coming from that place for me. Nothing against them.
  10:23pm
Bob O:

Greetings in the Avant Ghetto!
I’m really glad Pacific Range are repeat offenders here! I’m digging em!

Petricole:

Lovely tune. @hairyhood I bet you're a highly skilled procrastinator. You got this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Mr. Pumpy:

Jeff...agreed! That has made a huge difference. there was a time when all 'jam bands', for lack of a better term, sounded like they only listened to jam bands. Boring.
  10:25pm
Geology:

"A band like Garcia People’s don’t come from a classic rock banckground and it’s for the best." Spot on. They've absorbed the classic stuff, plus the Dead obviously, but also Sonic Youth and all that and it's brilliant.

who knew that all i needed to heal my quarantine blues was to dance to the dead in my living room
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Mr. Pumpy:

@Geology, in other words...they are true musicians, not mimics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm not sure what it i, Jeff. There's a generation of musicians now that have absorbed the music without the mythos. The were never "on tour". They're not trying to pick up the pieces of the deadhead parking lot scene. Its wonderful.
Avatar 10:27pm
Aaron:

Yeah, this one’s washing the blues away for sure

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

Fair enough, Jeff. There was just this cohort of bands that kind of washed over me in a blur. I'm not naming any more names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Mr. Pumpy:

@Geology...an that's coming from a guy that likes a lot of technical metal and other shit that would seem counter to what I said, but if it doesn't have that creative exploration behind it, no thanks.
  10:32pm
CC:

emulation as opposed to simulation?!?
Avatar 10:34pm
Eiderdown:

The problem with the jam band dudes when I was growing up in the late 80's/early 90's was that they were so...conservative in their musical tastes! For folks playing psychedelic sounds, they were really stodgy with their musical tastes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Mr. Pumpy:

Moe never grabbed me, but hey...whatever. An acquaintance of mine did some of the covers, including the awesome Headseed. I heard a bunch of them through him and his dad. Got into a show or two. To each their own. I'm certainly not a taste-maker, but I know what I like.
Avatar 10:35pm
Jeff Conklin:

@Eiderdown: Yeah, that's why old school Deadheads are the worst. Thankfully the new generation is more open-minded..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Pauly from Clifton:

@Jeff, 10:27, your selections lend themselves to that. Reminiscent of my parents and older sisters putting me to sleep to the great Alison Steele on WNEW a long time ago. Most excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Mr. Pumpy:

@Eiderdown...yes! A lot of peeps were that way. And they were so into tunes I knew were influenced by things I knew and thought they would also love. I'd play Zappa for some folks that I knew who were into Phish and they thought I was fucking insane! I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I decided early on that many were more into the scene than discovering awesome sounds. Again, to each their own. I still have a hard time coming to terms with that mode of thinking though.
Avatar 10:37pm
Jeff Conklin:

ah the Nightbird, my dad was a big fan...

Good god. There are "old school" deadheads? I don't think so.
Avatar 10:39pm
Jeff Conklin:

@dean: gonna ignore that comment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Mr. Pumpy:

Well, Dean, I would think someone listening to them for 50 years as opposed to 5 years would make that discernment.
Avatar 10:40pm
Eiderdown:

Ha. Those kind of attitudes turned me off to a lot of good music...til I wised up and learned to trust the band, not the fan :)

I find myself enjoying a lot of music that's on some sort of loose spectrum between new-psychedelia and so-called stoner rock. An area that includes Garcia Peoples, Earthless, Endless Boogie, Heron Oblivion...
  10:41pm

That's remarkable. That's a "discernment." I disagree.
