Emilia Amper, Champion of Sweden's Nyckelharpa, Recorded at WOMEX, October 2019

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop‑up player!

Meet 2010 World Nyckelharpa Champion Emilia Amper! Okay, maybe you didn't know there's a world championship for Sweden's beloved keyed fiddle. Although perhaps you've heard of the Grammys - Emilia been nominated for one of those as well. She's a great musician and principled as well: Amper is among a growing number of performers who, because of climate concerns, no longer tour by plane. Emilia Amper joins us for a musical meet and greet recorded at the WOMEX world music expo. (Photo of Emelia Amper with nyckelharpa by Olof Grind.)

Handy...I'm sure it's going to be awesome. The degree to which you are so hard on yourself speaks volumes to your dedication and attention to detail. I'll try and not be too hung over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Mr. Pumpy:

The Nyckelharpa looks like a take on the Hurdy-gurdy...or the other way around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Mr. Pumpy:

I could listen to the history of this all day. Fascinating. Thanks Emilia & Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Handy Haversack:

Some connection between fågeln and German "vogel"? I didn't realize that "troll" just signified "magic" ... wondering if maybe it's more accurately "faerie bird" or "elf/spirit bird"?
    Avatar 7:56pm Bas NL:

@Handy Must be for sure.. One of those basic words in germanic languages.. it's 'vogel' in dutch as well..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm WR:

Great interview, great music. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

    this is splendid, thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Handy Haversack:

She *did* say that you can play it with a bow or with hammers, right? I'm not making that up?
    Avatar 7:58pm Bas NL:

People from Sweden always seem to be so fluent in English..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Rob W:

HH - it's bowed typically - a pretty sort bow - you can see her holding it in the photo actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Handy Haversack:

OK -- thought I had heard her say that some people played it with hammers, which, I can't even!

    Really enjoying this segment!
      8:05pm Thursday Fernworthy:

Excellent program! Thx so much for sharing and for being here

Bas, I always thought the same with NL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Rob W:

    Thanks Thurs!
    Avatar 8:13pm Bas NL:

Yes, but a lot less 'fluid' then the Swedes i think; dutch speaking english is in fact it's often referred to as 'Dunglish'.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

    Dunglish, have not heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Handy Haversack:

Assuming "Schottis" is "Scottish." So much common ground among the Scandinavian and Irish and Scottish folk traditions. The Kingdom of the Isles, ruled from (I think) Skye and Mull held the Highlands and Islands parts of Scotland and also chunks of north Ireland and was, basically, a Viking kingdom. Good museum for it on Skye at the MacDonald clan HQ. Very. Cool. Boats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Handy Haversack:

(Now really regretting not adding "wth!" after "Assuming "Schottis" is "Scottish"!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm mariano:

Schott is German for Scot, not sure about other Germanic languages.
    Avatar 8:39pm Bas NL:

Do check out Dunglish @chresti.. Many books are written on it because you get the most strange sentences, like "I thank you from the bottom of my heart.. and my wife's bottom."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Santos L. Halper:

This has been a wonderful show Rob, thanks! Introduced to the Nyckelharpa by Vasen a few years back...
