Listener comments!

  2:54pm Listener Robert:

I spent a while wondering what "titty or sock money" meant...until I took it literally and understood it in context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm zopa:

But sock money is how I pay for my booze!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Handy Haversack:

Hi, Irwin, everyone!

I want that sign as a T-shirt. And billboard. And sky writing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm brainiac:

Is blacking out now considered drinking responsibly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Stevel:

#tittyorsockmoney #youcoughyoudie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

That sign is the real shit, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Stevel:

Tiger Lillies are sweeping the nation like a virus with their new hit Social Distancing!
  3:03pm John in Bklyn:

That was a cover of a Kurt Weill song.
Hi Irwin and Chusidians!
Avatar 3:03pm Listening Out There:

Obviously, a typo in the sign. Meant "sock monkey"...
Avatar 3:04pm Jeezuseffinchrist:

omg of course that was the Tiger Lillies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm hypothete:

This track is saving me money on coffee
Avatar 3:06pm Irwin:

This is a Les Baxter cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Alison Porchnik:

That's the virus talking, Irwin.
  3:07pm spodiodi:

anyone know the titty to sock currency exchange rate?
aloha, Irwin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

@Listening Out There: but how will I get my drink on??
Avatar 3:09pm Listening Out There:

@Hopey Sockmonkey: Wait for your stimulus check from Mr. T....
  3:10pm BH:

Hopefully regulations will govern the sheer number of syrupy covid-inspired love ballads that could emerge as a result of this.
  3:10pm spiderbit:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm The Oscar:

Afternoon-- learning the Tiger Lillies are still active is the pleasant surprise of the day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Otis Fodder:

Why hello there everyone. Howdy Sir Ir!
  3:17pm John in Bklyn:

Nice stuff! Vamp reminds me of Joe Henderson.
  3:17pm jan:

Sling shot - had to stop multitasking and listen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Otis Fodder:

I've been eating so much cake, I can use coins as titty money, wet bills still in the socks.
  3:20pm Laura L:

Hi Otis and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You'd think that face masks with handy, convenient drinking ports would be popular with the drinking public.
Avatar 3:24pm Irwin:

Laura, please don't bail. Muriel will leave the room after this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Handy Haversack:

"Handy: convenient drinking port" is an epithet I could live with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

@Ken FHP: I think you are onto something there . . . My partner saw men on street corners in LA selling cloth face masks, so you would do well to fill an obvious need.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Alison Porchnik:

@Handy Isn't that also known as a mouth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Handy Haversack:

Mouths are so 2019, @Alison! This is the future! It's gotta have zazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Ruby from Amherst:

@Irwin: Passover last day is today, ends tonight
Avatar 3:28pm Irwin:

Ruby: Passover ends April 16 nightfall, according to my sources. Wrong?
Avatar 3:29pm Irwin:

Checking again, every source says tomorrow night.
  3:31pm Laura L:

Nah, I didn't bail--there's enough bailing going on in the world today!
  3:31pm David in London:

Evening all, evening Irwin. Hey Handy, survived your meet OK?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, David: Survived it and survived exercise time, even. It's all coming up Handy!

Whatever that was from, we just watched it recently.
Avatar 3:35pm Seanbelly:

Please let that sign be real!
Avatar 3:35pm Itzall Gön'gett-Bettresuhnn:

Oh man. Joe Frank.
Avatar 3:35pm βrian:

  3:37pm Beetlemuse:

Yes, good to hear Joe again :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Handy Haversack:

Ah, right -- KBII. We*did* watch that recently. Time might still be linear! But I am not going to wager much on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Andrew_in_WI:

Who did that Joe Frank tribute last year?
  3:38pm David in London:

Damn, Joe Frank is always so amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Taking copious notes on these sales tactics, in case this isn't in the archve.
  3:39pm Mike tp:

have to thank wfmu for getting JOE FRANK into my noodle.
  3:39pm David in London:

Especially with Can as his backing band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm happymaan:

Yes, who @Andrew?
  3:40pm berbo:

Thomas Jefferson also "edited" his own version of the bible. So really this is all patriotic.
  3:40pm Beetlemuse:

where can I buy a Joe Frank Bible?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Brian in UK:

Hello Irwin. Just played Pet Sounds whilst cooking dinner to try and glean something. Failed again.
  3:43pm BH:

One of the stations broadcasts in 5G and causes all sorts of awful things. The other broadcasts in standard and causes the same awful things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Handy Haversack:

@Brian in UK, you might need to hear it over WMFU to get full demoniac effect.
Avatar 3:44pm James Douglas:

Those satanic messages on WMFU are for all the jerkoffs in Rockland and Orange counties. Glen and X.Ray helped in the plans.
Avatar 3:46pm βrian:

Took me a while to fathom what in hell "titty (or sock) money" was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Brian in UK:

@HH grown men called The BBs singing teenage laments. Something is not right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm happymaan:

You can say this guy can't sing, but you can't say he didn't sing.
Avatar 3:53pm Cp304:

no he said nothin compares
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm brainiac:

They really scraped the bottom of the barrel with those Prince demo releases
Avatar 3:53pm Irwin:

Despite his awkward delivery, IMHO this guy's got soul.

Avatar 3:54pm Itzall Gön'gett-Bettresuhnn:

Is he really worse than the guy from Depeche Mode?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I can really feel what this version is laying down.
Avatar 3:54pm Cp304:

yes it is great!
  3:54pm David in London:

It’s like Dracula singing a Prince composition rather wistfully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I saw the Tiger Lillies a long time ago doing the music for Shockheaded Peter!

The Romantic Side of Dracula, coming out soon on Columbia Records.
  3:55pm Laura L:

Let's hope that not being able to sing will never stop anyone from singing--as long as they record it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Mr. Pumpy:

Stephin Merritt got into the qualude jar and found a casio keyboard..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Handy Haversack:

You just know there's some THICK fog out this guy's window. Er, casement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm chris:

maybe this is proof, this song is so damn great anyone can do it, if ya feel it.
  3:56pm David in London:

That needs to be on heavy rotation on Soft 91.9

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Threemoons:

Hello all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Otis Fodder:

Vivian is really digging up some wonders that she shares with the Sheena bunch in the jungle room too. That tape was just great.
Avatar 4:02pm tak:

  4:03pm William Main:

@Brainiac: That's where I heard this song before!
Avatar 4:03pm Jeff Moore:

"A Smile and a Ribbon" reminds me of a friend's description of the family situation she grew up in. The parents were warring alcoholics having knock-down drag-outs downstairs and scarring the children; my friend's sister coped by immersing herself in cheerfulness and Disney songs and singing them loudly and obsessively upstairs to drown out the chaos. That sister left home as soon as she could to work for the mouse. I wonder how many of the people workin' for the mouse have similar backgrounds...
Avatar 4:03pm Irwin:

Vivian records under the name Dr. Airlines. She's got some good outsidery stuff. Has also recorded some duets with Daniel Johnston. Find her on Bandcamp.
Avatar 4:03pm Jeezuseffinchrist:

why does this remind me of NRBQ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Otis Fodder:

Wow, okay, this is damn good. And my Jim Sullivan tastescope is pretty high. Will check out Boy Azooga now, thanks Irwin!
  4:04pm John in Bklyn:

Wow, was the whole mix just tremeloed? Nice effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Otis Fodder:

Dr Airlines has covered our version of Mr Snuggles (with Michelle) and she covered our Bran song "I have a friend" too. Oh yeaaa!
  4:05pm flashbazbo:

Unknown huh? I know bootleg Lou Reed when I hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm brainiac:

@William: that old guy Norman waiting for the bus was a powerful metaphor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Otis Fodder:

Haaa, that could've been Lou!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Alison Porchnik:

@Jeff, speaking of working for the mouse, check this out. economicrt.org...
  4:13pm William Main:

@Brainiac: It's frightening to think how close I am to being like that god guy. But not quite...
  4:13pm William Main:

old guy - excuse the typo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Mr. Pumpy:

Chip Wickham is killing it.
Avatar 4:15pm Irwin:

Noticing how the chord changes of "Route One" are similar to those in "Sling Shot."
  4:15pm Laura L:

I see on Bandcamp this is a May 2020 release from Wickham--terrific.
  4:15pm William Main:

A Freudian slip?
  4:17pm Dave Miss:

pretty awesome image of the birthday boy
  4:36pm John in Bklyn:

You hit that one a long ways away, Irwin!
  4:36pm Laura L:

As you know, Irwin, I know almost nothing about baseball but that was a great story.
Avatar 4:37pm Chud:

Irwin, do you have a location on his grave? Greenwood is one of my regular stops when I visit
Avatar 4:37pm Chud:

whoops, forgot to just search for it:
Avatar 4:37pm Irwin:

Chud: Alison and I had to visit Green-Wood twice to find it. It's listed as being in Lot 2, but it's in Lot 4. She might recall the names of the paths.
Avatar 4:38pm Chud:

Looks like a sweet one!
Avatar 4:39pm Chud:

Damn I miss walking through that place
Avatar 4:39pm Irwin:

There's a concrete baseball on Creighton's monument's finial. It was stolen over 100 years ago and replaced in a ceremony in 2014.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Laura, same here. Don't know me much baseball at all. Yes, a great story...I may have to share it with my old man later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Doug Schulkind:

That was awful lovely that was.
  4:41pm Listener Robert:

Protoball? Irwin, are you friendly with Richard Hershberger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Alison Porchnik:

Yep we know Richard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Alison Porchnik:

Sorry, I know my name's not Irwin.
Avatar 4:42pm Irwin:

Robert: Absolutely. Richard's a regular presenter at the 19th C BB conference in Cooperstown. Great guy, fantastic storyteller.
  4:43pm Listener Robert:

I know Richard Hershberger thru Usenet group alt.fan.cecil-adams .
Avatar 4:43pm Irwin:

Also have gotten to know John Thorn, Bob Tholkes, Tom Gilbert, and dozens of other (more knowledgeable than me) protoball authorities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Handy Haversack:

I have seen an 1865-style baseball game. One guy who is sometimes on my softball team plays in one of the local re-creation leagues.

Bob Thorn is certainly a good one to get to know!
Avatar 4:46pm Irwin:

Thorn is one of the most astonishing people I've ever met. He carries encyclopedias of information in his head and it rolls off his tongue in erudite, perfectly constructed sentences, often tinged with a dollop of wit. A very learned man.
  4:46pm Listener Robert:

Handy, Irwin, have either of you ever experienced re-creations of the Boston/Massachusetts version of baseball? Who'd have TIME or PATIENCE today for such re-creations?
Avatar 4:46pm Irwin:

The Massachusetts game had five bases. They lost out to the New York game.
Avatar 4:47pm Irwin:

And no, baseball was not first played in Hoboken. Much as I love my little hometown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Alison Porchnik:

@Chud Creighton's monument is in Lot 4, near the top of Vision Path, off of Spruce Avenue, near where Vision intersects with Tulip path.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Handy Haversack:

Is the Mass. version more rounders and the NY one more town-ball?

I worked on the editorial and production end of a book several years back that made a case for more acknowledgment of the role of Alexander Joy Cartwright to the formalization of the game. Certainly he was crucial in spreading it west -- and to Hawaii.
Avatar 4:51pm Irwin:

Handy: For authoritative answers, read David Block's BASEBALL BEFORE WE KNEW IT. David also presents at the 19th C conference. Great writer and a meticulous researcher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Handy Haversack:

I'll pick that up, Irwin! Thanks!
Avatar 4:53pm Irwin:

Handy: Many of Cartwright's alleged contributions were fabricated by his grandson, who forged entries in his dead grandfather's journals.
Avatar 4:54pm Irwin:

John Thorn: "Recent scholarship has revealed the history of baseball’s origin to be merely a lie agreed upon. According to the Hall of Fame plaque for Alexander Joy Cartwright, Jr., he is the 'Father of Modern Base Ball. Set bases 90 feet apart. Established 9 innings as a game and 9 players as a team. Organized the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of N.Y. in 1845. Carried baseball to Pacific Coast and Hawaii in pioneer days.' I can tell you that each and every one of these statements is either demonstrably false or lacks evidence of truth."
  4:54pm spodiodi:

that's great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Handy Haversack:

I remember our wanting him to endorse the book and that being a nonstarter, I think. This was a set of years back!

That's one diabolical grandson, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Lizardner Dave 2:

There's a sign in the plaque room at Cooperstown that says something to the effect of "All information was thought to be correct at the time it was written"
Avatar 4:58pm Irwin:

Don't get Thorn started on Cartwright. And I mean DON'T. It's a waste of his time.
Avatar 4:59pm Irwin:

Lizardner: Yep, that's CYA, because they will never remove anyone's placque.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Handy Haversack:

Ha -- it's a deal, Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Little Danny:

Wow, this is lovely, this Drab City
  5:00pm stalvey:

Caught the baseball mic break from near the end of the Ruth part, and had what NPR folk call a driveway moment. Had to hear the rest before starting the car. That was great. Thanks, Mr. DJ!

Spodi: That is an acceptable answer.
Avatar 5:05pm Itzall Gön'gett-Bettresuhnn:

Sure is a little bit of "Ghost & Mr. Chicken" on the Nitemate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Little Danny:

Western PA, Carmichael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Carmichael:

Ha ha, no Danny, actually Sacramento. Is that a PA term?
  5:07pm brainiac:

This is cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Little Danny:

Oh yes proudly PA
  5:12pm Listener Robert:

As far as I remember, it was Bill Kelly who developed "all you jerk-offs in Rockland County" as a catch phrase once you started IDing the translator there.

Monsieur le Rogers..?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Little Danny:

Reminded me a bit of moments from Walt Dickerson's 'Patch of Blue' and 'Impressions of Lawrence of Arabia' LPs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Spinning Giant:

@brainiac Thanks for the reco re baseball substitute material! Cheers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Switchblade Batman:

Last question I asked Richard Hershberger was, "In about 1850, give or take a decade, what percentage of Americans (all sexes and races) do you think would have played baseball at least once by their 11th birthday? How about football (counting anything they might have called football or could be oonsidered some type of football by us, even if the ball was a stuffed burlap rag)? How about cricket?"
  5:19pm BH:

hey, it's pre-ASMR ASMR reading of "WFMU"
Avatar 5:20pm Irwin:

Do you recall RH's reply?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Spinning Giant:

Dickie Petes!!! Glorygeous! Cheers Monsieur Le Chusid :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Mark Hurst:

Great show today, Irwin. Enjoyed the baseball history.
Avatar 5:21pm Irwin:

The Proud Girl tape is from the mid-1980s. A friend was really sick, kept a cassette deck by her bedside, recorded sporadically while blitzed out on meds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Crudbringer:

You can't fool me, this is Stone Temple Pilots.
Avatar 5:21pm Cp304:

this song is up there with that unknown dude
Avatar 5:21pm Irwin:

I think the singer is from the Young Fresh Fellows.
Avatar 5:22pm Irwin:

They were friends with Peterson.
  5:22pm Listener Robert:

Here's the link to the thread in Deja Google: groups.google.com...

I didn't ask him specifically, but when you throw up a can of corn like that in alt.fan.cecil-adams, you expect him to answer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Spinning Giant:

...is it one of Crazy Mike Patton's alteregos...?
Avatar 5:23pm Irwin:

Thank you, Marcus Technicus.
Avatar 5:23pm Irwin:

Crud: STP included this on their 2nd album. It was written and recorded by Peterson.
  5:24pm ZeeBee:

Listening here with new cat friend Merle. He likes this one. Hello to all!
  5:24pm Listener Robert:

Direct to Richard's most definitive answer: groups.google.com...
Avatar 5:25pm Irwin:

Peterson had an obsession with Johnny Mathis. There's a film about him, "Big City Dick."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Spinning Giant:

Hello Merle & ZeeBee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Spinning Giant:

Big City Dick - that's a killer band name

I'm more interested in proto-football, and wanted to get some idea of the relative commonness of ANY KIND of football and any kind of baseball in the mid-19th Century as participant sports. I'm also interested in the degree to which each sport was a children's game carried on by adults or an adult game imitated by children.
  5:27pm Terracota:

Hi Irwin.
I have a question...
Today the song Ceniza played on the radio?
Avatar 5:29pm Irwin:

Terra: Excuse me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm coelacanth∅:

hi Irwin. i have a question.
Avatar 5:30pm Irwin:

I have answers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm coelacanth∅:

we'd make a good pair, us two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I have fond mid-western memories of Sears.
  5:31pm Terracota:

Hi Irwin... A friend from the Band Saneinsane Gold me that Ceniza, a Song, played on the radio today... IM SORDY... My english is Not Good!
  5:31pm Listener Robert:

By the way, Richard seems to have swallowed the scuttlebutt that early football both in the British Isles and North America was "hard to distinguish from a riot". Of course the ones that caused the most disturbance got the most attention from contemporaries and therefore historians, but this is a very biased selection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Crudbringer:

Avatar 5:33pm Irwin:

Terra: It must have been on an earlier show. Check the online playlists for Duane, Ken, and Wake & Bake.
  5:33pm Terracota:

Ok! Thank youuu!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Little Danny:

Yes! This version of "Paper Moon" is sooo good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Little Danny:

I love the quasi-Eastern tinge on the intro and outro
Avatar 5:43pm Irwin:

Lee Morgan on trumpet.
Avatar 5:43pm Irwin:

Piano: Bobby Timmons.
  5:43pm yerfriendpaul:

This sounds so good!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Alison Porchnik:

This is the wildest version of Paper Moon I've ever heard. I love it! Did Blakey do the arrangement?
  5:44pm spodiodi:

this is the kind of music that make space aliens really stand up and take notice
  5:45pm spodiodi:

maybe there's hope after all
Avatar 5:45pm Irwin:

AP: Good question. I doubt it. Possibly Wayne Shorter or Timmons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Alison Porchnik:

It's blowing my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Little Danny:

The liner notes of Big Beat imply it was Lee Morgan's idea
  5:47pm Beetlemuse:

I love organs and guitars together!
Avatar 5:47pm Irwin:

LD: I'll accept that, esp. since Shorter didn't play on the track (tho he is on the album).
Avatar 5:48pm Irwin:

Don't think Blakey was an arranger, but he hired some great ones. You could say he "arranged" the band.
  5:48pm William Main:

Devotion - My favorite John McLaughlin record (even though I know he disowned it). Larry Young sounds great, too.
Swag For Life Member 5:48pm 12539:

Thanks, Irwin! Take care out there.
Avatar 5:49pm Irwin:

WM: In between Miles and Mahavishnu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm coelacanth∅:

Blakey made the arrangements for the arrangements to be made
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Little Danny:

According to Hentoff in the BB's liners, Lee Morgan was "[then] musical director of the Messengers (in charge of the library)." No other mention of arrangers, except that it seems to have started as an impromptu jam (led by Morgan) during a Messengers residency in Paris.
  5:52pm William Main:

@Irwin: Yes. I love the first incarnation of Tony Williams Lifetime with McLaughlin and Young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks for a great show, Irwin and Irwin's Skeleton BOARD OPS! Really enjoyed the Creighton story and protoball talk, Irwin. I will get that book.

Much, much appreciation for making this happen.
Avatar 5:52pm Irwin:

LD: I'd think if you have Wayne Shorter in the band, you gotta use him as an arranger sometime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Little Danny:

I would say so too!

Thanks Irwin, great show as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Irwin

Leaving you with a comment from one of my favorite writers, who told his lock-downed daughter: “Stay safe. This will be over and life will go on, but what you do for the next few weeks is for all the marbles. Stay on it 100%.”
