My aunt said a national company donated a bunch of N95 masks to their local hospital -- which won't let the health workers wear them because they did not come from a local source ...
Avatar 6:07pm dale:

i had 2 boxes of 3M n95 masks in my garage and mice nested in the boxes. i could wear them and get the plague but i tossed them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm annie:

i don't trust Zoom
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm queems:

my therapist uses zoom with clients and she is worried about hipaa stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Handy Haversack:

I have been encouraging people to drop it since that first LinkedIn article you posted, @queems!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm ultradamno:

They owe the PBS show royalties
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm queems:

@handy my sister sent me that article! glad to see that someone else in my family is wearing the tin foil hat this time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Now is the time for all good skeletons to come to the aid of the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Handy Haversack:

@queems: Right? I would love it (and be shocked to my core!) if anything like that came from anyone in my family.
  6:13pm Tony:

Is it only the iOS version of Zoom that sends data to Facebook?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Bas NL:

Just visited zoom.us.. It's free! :)
Avatar 6:13pm herb.nyc:

aside, but important: there's an action to "free the vaccine for covid-19". I attended webinar 1 on Friday (they used Zoom, but I attended via phone call). Info at c4aa dot org
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Mark Hurst:

BTW I think the Zoom privacy policy got updated slightly a day or so after I recorded this intro.
  6:13pm Zoom CEO:

Please stop probing our privacy policy. You're supposed to accept the terms and move along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm annie:

theyhad a lawyer write that shit
  6:15pm GListener MW:

BAHAHAHHA I feel like that Zoom policy is written by a moustache-twirling lawyer stereotype played by Wallace Shawn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm queems:

this is why we can't have nice things
  6:15pm Sam:

It depends what the definition of “is” is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm annie:

how sad, queems... iknow..
Avatar 6:16pm sbw:

Doc Searls: "Yesterday (March 29), Zoom updated its privacy policy with a major rewrite. The new language is far more clear than what it replaced, and which had caused the concerns I detailed in my previous three posts ..." blogs.harvard.edu...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Mark Hurst:

@sbw good link - Doc did a great job covering this. I think his posts helped cause that update.
Avatar 6:17pm herb.nyc:

(Wow, fm transmission to my apt is real clean and clear)
  6:18pm Sam:

Zoom really cares about your privacy, just like that psychic is really talking to your deceased grandpa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm annie:

there are stories about the corona thing; that you can get "certified" tht you are no longer a carrier...and get some paper work to carry with you to show when you want to
enter another country
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm ultradamno:

More is more!
  6:20pm P-90:

Present! Got here late because The Prez’s daily press briefing was such a surreal train wreck that I couldn’t tear myself away...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Handy Haversack:

I was on meet.jit.si for six hours yesterday with six other people. Worked well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy glad to hear it
  6:22pm P-90:

“monoculture of minimalism” I’ve watched this happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Handy Haversack:

I remember an article on simplicity consultants in the NYTimes Magazine (of course) over 20 years ago. They were pictured standing beneath their 64-piece set of copper pots and pans ...

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm queems:

i'm a definite stuff haver
Avatar 6:24pm Chud:

Mark, your show has inspired me to reformat my android phone to an OS without Google. A bonus to not phoning-home to their servers is that the battery life has doubled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Jackie:

A lifetime ago, I was able to tour Judd's loft. It was sublime.
  6:28pm P-90:

@Chud: how long have you been using this OS? Can you say which one it is? What make of Android phone are you using it on? I’ve been seriously considering experimenting with switching from Apple/IOS to an Android phone
w/out Google.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm melinda:

@queems I like my stuff too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Blobs:

This guy's vocal fry is over the top, haha
Avatar 6:29pm northguineahills:

I'm a maximalist minimalist....
Avatar 6:30pm Chud:

P-90, I've been using ArrowOS on a Moto G5 Plus since January. It's an AOSP without Google Apps/Backend
Avatar 6:32pm Chud:

It's very solid, but the downside is that you have to trust some no-name developers. The plus side is that you can build the code yourself
Avatar 6:32pm northguineahills:

I don't have my stuff (w/in geographical convenient access)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm ultradamno:

For true minimalism, you need to go saltless.
  6:32pm P-90:

Dr. John C. Lily
  6:33pm Julie:

What is the name of the book about doing nothing called again? And the author?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm annie:

i'm so minimalist,i have guilt pangs when i can't patch my clothing anymore and ihave to
throw out some flimsy slacks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm queems:

i've found that as a person who makes objects, it's unsatisfying to live without being surrounded by objects
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Webhamster Henry:

There are Isolation tanks here in Kingston (Zephyr Float) . I bet they aren't open right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm melinda:

There is a float tank place in my town with a copy of John C. Lily's memoir in their little lounge area, called Tanks for the Memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Bas NL:

Good point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm brainiac:

@Blobs It brought tears to my eyes. Had to turn it off for a while.
  6:35pm P-90:

@Chud: Thanks, I’ve read about it, I’ll take another look. There are so many really good Samsung phones that are such better pieces of hardware in some ways than comparable Apple models, but I want to be able to use one reliably without opening my kimono to Google...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Mark Hurst:

@Chud so happy to hear it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Simpsons did it - youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm ifny:

The convo has moved on I see, but for those looking for a community / free and open source video conferencing application with encryption, Jitsi is excellent. No software necessary as users can just visit it as a link in a browser. Better performance under network congestion conditions than Zoom too. It's friendly for n00bs, or you can host your own instance if you're fancy. meet.jit.si Their privacy policy: jitsi.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm chresti:

Zen gardens- minimal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Mark Hurst:

@ifny thanks - mentioned Jitsi earlier in the show & glad to hear your experience

P-90, agreed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Jackie:

@Ken from Hyde Park: I won’t be surprised to see Marie Kondo guest star on the Simpsons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm ultradamno:

Socially distanced album covers www.adweek.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm ifny:

Oh cool -- I missed the beginning of the show. Around here, we say 'Colonialism does not spark joy.'
  6:40pm P-90:

Ha! I was waiting for Kondo’s name to come up in this hour...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Webhamster Henry:

I made a meme image with Thanos snapping saying "Does it Spark Joy?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Bas NL:

I don't like people who love to de-clutter. I like to re-purpose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm ultradamno:

Nothing sparks joy, that's not useful standard for me, everything stays.
Avatar 6:42pm Franco Twinkie:

Years ago I was walking down the street in Soho and I saw Donald Judd in a gallery with an arrangement of his decidedly minimalist boxes. He was lecturing two cowed looking collector types. I imagine he was telling them if they wanted one of his sculptures, they would first have to throw away all their furniture.
  6:42pm P-90:

I just the other day saw that Kondo has a site where she’s marketing products... instantly felt a LOT less open to her messaging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm queems:

what a JAM
  6:42pm Peter from Dover NJ:

Mark, that was a great interview. I hope you'll consider more book discussions / author interviews.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Mark Hurst:

@P-90 did you see the $75 crystal (or whatever) I mentioned?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm melinda:

I've been thinking that a pandemic makes one more aware of the value of having extras of lots of things and supplies for self-reliance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Mark Hurst:

@Peter thanks! I do have some more authors in the pipeline. If you're interested, lots of past author interviews in the archives at techtonic.fm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Motobro:

Very nice interview Mark.
Interesting how the current COVID situation factored into the discussion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Mark Hurst:

@Motobro thanks! And congrats on winning Monday races this morning.
  6:44pm P-90:

@Mark: I didn’t go to the site, I just saw a news item about it. Not in a rush to check it out, somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Webhamster Henry:

With me, it's busted machinery that I hope to fix sometime that spark joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Handy Haversack:

Books, old magazines for collaging, stuff you can get your cats to chase, tapes you haven't head in a while ... all great to have around these days.
  6:46pm Erin in TO:

Great interview Mark, and these songs are fantastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Motobro:

Why thank you Mark.
Got to finish it to win it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm annie:

i collect and save fabrics, threads, and sewing notions.. all vital necessities
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Mark Hurst:

@Erin thanks!
  6:47pm P-90:

My hope would be that a Kondo merchandising store would focus on a limited number of super-useful, well-made, hard-to-find items, like the old Smith & Hawken catalog. Not like just another museum gift shop catalog or something...
  6:47pm mark bodah:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm listener 126464:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm ultradamno:

I have to assume 2020 spring break anecdotes will be dominating the Darwin Awards.
  6:49pm P-90:

Now nothing can “go viral” any more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, goodness: Appendix T: Nomenclature of the Polearm!

Another great show, Mark! Thanks! Mondays on WFMU: a cure for *some* of what ails us!

  6:54pm Peter from Dover NJ:

@Mark Hurst I'll check your archives. I'm a personal trainer, I've traditionally been working at 6P on Mondays. Don't get to listen to your show as often as I'd like.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Mark Hurst:

@Peter thanks! Yep plenty to listen to at techtonic.fm - there's a podcast link, as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Handy Haversack:

It's really depressing that it's just the go-to content repository and that so many friends and neighbors use it to send you stuff that appeals to them. I just never click on any of those links.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Corey:

Thanks Mark! Informative as always.
  6:55pm Earth Walker:

So well said Mark Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Bas NL:

@Corey, @EarthWalker, @Bas, Handy, Ken, brainiac, motobro, chris, and everyone else - thanks for joining me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm ifny:

Agreed re: YouTube. Have you heard of the "How To Cook That" channel? They do a good debunking of YT algorithm interplay with the notorious 'So Yummy' transnational media conglomerate. Sadly I think they're only on YT but it's interesting regardless, for example: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm ifny:

Thank you Mark for another excellent show -- I look forward to listening to the full episode later. Free and Open power and solidarity to you and all!
