  3:40pm michaelz:

Andrew Cuomo has been amazing. So different than the clowns at the state level in Texas. But at least our cities are all run by responsible democrats who base their decisions on statistics and facts and not what their God tells them. I thought it was bad when then Governor Perry told us all to pray for rain during a major drought a few years ago but they are at it again.

Haven't always been a fan of Andrew Cuomo, especially with his hypocrisy in the past, but I won't get into that, however I do think he is doing a great job handling this pandemic. He has coordinated things quite well and his constant communication with the President are serving New York well. Godspeed to Cuomo! @sheilab, I have a crush on someone also!

what Jett said. as a progressive NY democrat, I beg you not to let this become Cuomo’s Rudy 9/11 moment. please please please look up what Cuomo did to The great Andy Byford ...obviously the gov is great compared to the Orange Abomination, but Cuomo is an awful control freak normally. sadly a control freak is exactly what we need right now tho, so he is shining rt now

Sunny is the original, not Carol Douglas. Carol is a cover.

Cuomo has done fairly well in confronting POTUS Dumbass (up to a point) at the press briefings. I remember the first 9+ years of his Republican-enabling administration too well to be a fan however. (Voted Cynthia Nixon.)

You know, Handy, your talk of Rob Roys sent me down an interesting internet rabbit hole. I already knew that they're like Manhattans, except with scotch instead of rye/bourbon/Canadian. I've also read the probably-apocryphal story of how the Manhattan was named by Jennie Jerome (ie Churchill's mom). But then I find out that the Manhattan is the "national drink" of this tiny German island called Föhr - don't know why, but learning about such peculiarities helps keep me sane: www.bbc.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm The Oscar:

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but some film distributors are partnering with independent theaters for digital rentals of new releases-- if you rent through your theater's site, they'll receive a portion of the fee as if it were a ticket sale! re: Truffaut on the Criterion Channel ... I highly recommend "Two English Girls." I think it is lesser known and has been difficult to see in the past. It's based on a novel by the same author who wrote the novel "Jules and Jim." In this case it's one man involved with two sisters. It is as effortless and relaxed and engaging and brilliant as only the greatest masters can create (MHO of course).

Jules and Jim i certainly need to see. It's not on the Criterion Channel but how do people feel about The Story of Adele H.? I want to see more from Isabelle Adjani.

@diciassette @4:53 - "Wings" is terrific. The ending is one of my favorites of all time. Amazing that there was a woman director who could make this in the Soviet Union no less (but maybe not so amazing since there were Russian female fighter pilots in WWII, as the main character is).

I love Ethel Waters in "Cabin In The Sky" what a great film. Are you familiar with it? @djsheilab It was directed by Vicente Minnelli and Busby Berkeley.
Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Walt:

Not the Criterion Channel, but I also highly recommend these more lightly regarded films from Truffaut ... 1) "Small Change" - episodic film about children's lives in a rural French town, who are by turns charming and (occasionally) cruel. Also 2) "Fahrenheit 451" which a lot of people (even Truffaut) seem not to like, but I think it is one of the best dystopian/science fiction films ever. Maybe Truffaut's discomfort with the material led to its one-of-a-kind cold, detached and awkward feel? Nah, it's Truffaut, that had to be intentional.

Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Walt:

@RomanDogBird @5:21: I think it's very much worth watching. It's extremely well made and acted in the cold style I mentioned. If nothing else, there's Bernard Herrman's unsettling opening theme (in 7/4 time), spotting several special effects shots achieved by filming in reverse, finding another actor besides Julie Christie playing a dual role, and realizing the importance of apples. By the way, the weird vehicle that the "firemen" ride in the beginning is a modified camera crane truck.
