The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Sir Doug!!! Big Noisy Planet, front and center!
Avatar 8:24pm Zan:

I have one: I was 12 years old, visiting my godparents in Malibu, and my godfather was writing arrangements for an NBC special starring Bobby Darin. I went to the rehearsals and the show, and FELL. IN. LOVE. When I was 18, I was working on the Grammys in NYC, and was assigned to be Bobby's escort. told him the whole thing, and he was the doll I'd hoped he'd be. He died the next year. Broke my heart.
Avatar 8:24pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Sonny!!! Yes - it's our year-end, wind-down sort of thing...
Avatar 8:25pm bigplanetnoise:

Zan - I have one. I might be in love with your profile pic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gina Bacon:

Sonny Rickles!
Avatar 8:25pm Zan:

Aw, Bob...I don't know what to say.
  8:26pm Tim from LH:

Since your taking requests for next weeks show , how bout some NRBQ , since after seeing them last night I am a new convert.
Avatar 8:26pm Snayle:

After the Young Rascals' concert at my future HS gym - we waited for the guys to walk out of the building - there were cafeteria tables as barriers... I had my most Mod outfit on in hopes of catching Felix' eye... well Felix & Eddie scrammed so fast, all I could get in was a scream "GENE!" - he turned around and waved. He became my fave Rascal. The end.
Avatar 8:26pm Zan:

I will say this: my hair has changed since that was taken...
Avatar 8:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim - I'm SOOOOO glad you saw them! You got it! The Q spins next week!!!!!
Avatar 8:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Snayle Cornish has a nice "ring" to it......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Gina Bacon:

I really need to see them live again! It's been years.
Avatar 8:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Zan - hair matters not!!! No shallow-casters here!!!!
Avatar 8:28pm Zan:

I love that story, Snayle.
Avatar 8:28pm Snayle:

Hahha - I was hoping for a Snayle Cavaliere… :p
Avatar 8:28pm Zan:

Very "Almost Famous." :)
Avatar 8:29pm Zan:

Well, then, we're good, Bob...'cause the face is about the same ;)
Avatar 8:29pm bigplanetnoise:

Snayle Brigatti?!?!?!
Avatar 8:29pm Snayle:

Thanks Zan - ha - altho I wasn't writing for RS at the time... hehe
  8:29pm Tim from LH:

They played for over 2 solid hours. I think they covered just about every genre of popular music.
Avatar 8:29pm bigplanetnoise:

Actually, Julie Brigatti has a bit of nice alliteration.....

  8:33pm Tim from LH:

Avatar 8:44pm bigplanetnoise:

For you, Jules.....
Avatar 8:44pm Julie P.:

So I have to admit I am somewhat confused as to the difference between the two streams and how that relates to the same radio station. Bob, can you clarify?
Avatar 8:45pm Julie P.:

Avatar 8:45pm GregRnNashville:

"The" Substantial Evidence - looks like a local garage band from Mississippi - only a couple of releases on "Groovy Grape" label..ha might be hard to find given that info
Avatar 8:46pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - In addition to that magnificent WFMU proper, the station has three alternate streams - Give The Drummer Radio, Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban, and Sheena's Jungle Room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Joe Harriott is related to WFMU's own Duane Harriott (Duane Train on Wednesdays)!! He is also one of my all-time faves.
Avatar 8:48pm bigplanetnoise:

Drummer - where we're moving to - is the most "freeform" of all. DJ's play anything and everything they want, without any constraints of any kind. Drummer has 25 shows - it's busy and bustling and very conducive for creative radio. Does that make sense?
Avatar 8:48pm Julie P.:

Multiple simultaneous broadcasts? Radio has come a long way since my early days. Gotta love the internet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Gina Bacon:

It's amazing, Julie!
Avatar 8:49pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - yes - all streams run all the time!!!
Avatar 8:52pm bigplanetnoise:

Doug - I have the two Joe Harriott LPs on Atlantic - are there more? Asking without googling, of course....
Avatar 8:52pm Julie P.:

Sounds very cool - something for everyone. The one local station at Rollins College is like that, with a few boundaries, but there's still a lot of freedom. We did do the Christmas Eve show, BTW, and we had a great time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Gina Bacon:

It's a big/small musical world, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Gina Bacon:

Is that archived, Julie? I'm so sorry I missed it!
  8:53pm CC:

I'm late to the show tonight but I would like to put my request in for Baker Street Muse by Jethro Tull and 20th Century Man by The Kinks...Cheerz!!!
Avatar 8:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - is that show archived?????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Doug Schulkind:

I have at least 10 other Joe Harriott LPs. More if you count him as a sideman.

That was fun, GregRnNashville!!
Avatar 8:56pm GregRnNashville:

need another venue - let me know if you want me to badger some operators :)
Avatar 8:56pm Julie P.:

No, they aren't that sophisticated yet (at least I don't think so; I'll have to ask). Most of the live shows are college students (my friend is one of the exceptions) and whatever isn't covered is automation. It is possible I will be doing something on my own as a volunteer dj, though. Will keep you posted.
Avatar 8:57pm bigplanetnoise:

Up for that, GregRn!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Gina Bacon:

The last one we DJ'd was Duke's, til 2am...ouch!

Avatar 8:58pm bigplanetnoise:

This Paper Garden album has really grown on me. Love it.
  8:58pm CC:

If I'm allowed a third request I would like to request the fabulous fifties by David amram!!!... I'm having internet problems tonight by the way???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Gina Bacon:

How appropriate, Doug!

Ronnie - I LOVE that entire album! We've played it!
Avatar 9:42pm Julie P.:

A Monkees or Nesmith deep cut, and maybe a little Nilsson and of course Walker Brothers? And at some point it would be cool to hear both the Mike Berry and the Sadina versions of "It Comes and Goes".
Avatar 9:43pm bigplanetnoise:

Jules - I promise all those for you! I may not get them all in next week, but we'll start!!
Avatar 9:44pm Julie P.:

Have been debating with my wife the value of WFMU swag for life vs. Spotify subscription.
  9:54pm CC:

this tune kind of reminds me of psychedelic electronic scat type music or something!!!...
