The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Miked & Mailman - I love 'em all, right up through "New Blood"....

I like the love you gave to Sam Cooke.
Avatar 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 8:39pm vanhooserd:

Bobby Colomby's brother managed Monk. Which I imagine was quite a challenge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Gina Bacon:

That's nice, WR...thank you!
Avatar 8:40pm bigplanetnoise:

Bobby was a big wheel for ages for Columbia Records on the West Coast.
  8:41pm Miked_76:

I'm surprised there's never been a BS&T box set. There's more great stuff, besdies the three big singles.
Avatar 8:41pm vanhooserd:

Too bad he wasn't more active musically. A good drummer.
Avatar 8:42pm bigplanetnoise:

I produced the "What Goes Up" double CD set on Sony Legacy. Tough getting all the guys on board - so much in-fighting.
Avatar 8:42pm bigplanetnoise:

Ultimately, Bobby had more say than anyone, because of his position with Sony-Columbia.
  8:43pm Miked_76:

I will check that set out. I never knew it existed.
Avatar 8:43pm bigplanetnoise:

A lot of unissued material was nixed. Unfortunately. I think we got one or two on there.
Avatar 8:43pm Mailman Tom:

R.I.P. Baba Ram Dass
Avatar 8:44pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - yes, sad.
Avatar 8:44pm coelacanth∅:

huomenta & Snayle i bought this crapbook (high sierra) i'm on to replace my long-ailing snow leopard (much as i hated to support apple); but the snow leopard still works much better in many regards.
the governments of the planet (the little planet: earth) should have decreed that everything be compatible with snow leopard forever...it being the best operating system yet.
alas they don't care about the people or the planet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Gina Bacon:

Yes, RIP.
  8:44pm Tim from LH:

That’s the great thing about this show. Now I’m going to dig out my BS&T lp I inherited from big sis.
Avatar 8:45pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim - that's perfect. It makes me so happy!
Avatar 8:45pm Julie P.:

This early Carole King is amazing!
  8:45pm Miked_76:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gina Bacon:

Great, Tim!
Avatar 8:46pm huomenta:

Good reminders here: Sam Cooke, Booker T&the MG's, Blood,Sweat&Tears: big ones that have meant little to me but who I really should get to know much better. The City: sounds awesome!

  8:52pm Tim from LH:

Both streams are easily accessible on the App. But are there any differences between the two?
Avatar 8:52pm coelacanth∅:

...same show re"broadcast" an hour later?
Avatar 8:52pm bigplanetnoise:

Coel - I'd never be able to keep up!!!
Avatar 8:53pm coelacanth∅:

it is high-energy true
Avatar 8:53pm huomenta:

corpacanth@8:44 what you said. (except newer computers let alone high sierra are unknown to me) Try and find a linux variation for your liking if you ever get tired of apple letting you down. I who had no idea about the difference between a mac and a pc before I enrolled on a music tech course, have learned enough to use linux for everyday computer use.Especially nice when you want to breathe lfe into some old pc or mac that does not obey the newest regiment as it were
Avatar 8:54pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim & Coel - no, we're switching over to the Drummer stream. A little more flexibility in what we'll play, the ability to do more three-hour shows, etc. We love the programming on Drummer and we very much wanted to be a part!
  8:55pm Tim from LH:

It’s all WFMU and that’s all that matters
Avatar 8:56pm coelacanth∅:

Bob that's cool. -so, after Kim. less conflict over here then!
Avatar 8:57pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim & Coel - absolutely, on both counts!
Avatar 8:57pm Julie P.:

So, you fired the Robot?
Avatar 8:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - that Robot will be history, dammit. I hope?
Avatar 8:58pm huomenta:

sorry coelacanth, your title became corpacanth during my previous post, sounds like some brutal metal band name!!! is the tablet drunk or is just me....

Avatar 9:00pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 9:01pm coelacanth∅:

huomenta i tried linux c.2010 and bailed because i didn't know enough about computers to iron out all the problems i encountered and the guy who convinced me and promised to be there wasn't there.
i could probably make it work now.
...it was stupid of me to buy this high sierra in a refurbished 2010 macbook piece of crap last summer. i'd heard all mac operating systems have sucked for >5 years now. should've heeded that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm WR:

Hey Hey Mod Mokka!!! Glad you're here!!! Perfect timing!
  9:05pm Miked_76:

Talk about a jazzed up Bluebird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm WR:

I used to have that Jim Gordon Flying Dutchman record. I was too AVANTE for my own pants at the time. Wonder if it is still in the rack. Can enjoy it now.
Avatar 9:07pm Snayle:

Will BPN Archives still be here, in the old same place Or will they cross McArthur Park and walk into a great sandstone building ?
Avatar 9:07pm bigplanetnoise:

WR - that's amazing - I did the exact same thing.
  9:08pm JohnP:

Horn band freakout!
Avatar 9:08pm bigplanetnoise:

Snayle - all will stay the same. Only thing changing is where you'll find our show each Monday eve. On Drummer, one hour later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Gina Bacon:

JohnP! Howdy!
Avatar 9:08pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey JohnP!!! Horn Band Freakouts Every Week!!!!!
  9:09pm JohnP:

Hey Gina!
  9:09pm JohnP:

Yessir!!!
Avatar 9:09pm Snayle:

YAY ! Cool, Thanks! ( I wonder where Ruth is.... )
  9:10pm Eargasm!:

Is it me or is there more than a wee bit of Gin and Orange going on tonight? Albeit a bit more intense.
Avatar 9:10pm bigplanetnoise:

Snayle - Ruthlessly!
Avatar 9:10pm Snayle:

Thought the same Eargasm! Cocktails poured...
Avatar 9:11pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm - great music is great music is great music is
Avatar 9:11pm Julie P.:

Speaking of Gin and Orange, Bob when will it be back?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Uncle Michael:

Beatles every not-Christmas!
  9:11pm Eargasm!:

Very much the compliment! I'm loving this!
Avatar 9:12pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - unsure. I asked to do a G&O show the first Sunday in February, but have not heard back yet......................... No matter what, I'll do it someplace!!!!
Avatar 9:12pm Snayle:

...relentlessly....
Avatar 9:12pm Julie P.:

As long as it pops up somewhere!
  9:13pm Mod Mokka Matti:

@bigplanetnoise: Oh, good thing I just scrolled up to see earlier bits of convos. I was not aware that you two were leaving the Ichiban. It won't be too much of a challenge to get to the new location - I already listen to Mr. Grogan's show on GTD. :-)
  9:13pm Tim from LH:

Is this Beatles for Mrs. Irwin?
Avatar 9:14pm huomenta:

coelacanth: I know this is gonna sound like water is wet: but if it is a refurbished 2010 mac w/high sierra, I (who claim not to be an expert on any field) might say: yes, you could have some performance issues there. Linux can be frustrating on your own with no know-how (I can tell you I have been there!), but in case you can get some friendly assistance, linux can be quite rewarding too - and mind you, at the end of the day, I still admit I hate computers and the digital age.
Avatar 9:14pm Julie P.:

Tim, that was my guess as well.
Avatar 9:14pm bigplanetnoise:

Mod Mokka - oh yeah - a simple flick. Our link will bring you right to it! Spread the word!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Gina Bacon:

I'm over there on Saturdays, Mod Mokka Matti!
Avatar 9:14pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim - not yet - coming right up though! Reminds me of being a little punk kid in the kitchen while the AM radio was on and my mom was singing along. Next up!
Avatar 9:15pm huomenta:

Hyvää Joulua Mod Mokka Matti ja terveisiä Suomesta!
  9:15pm Doug Schulkind:

On Monday evenings preceding Big Planet Noise on the Drummer Stream there is another fantastic show. Global Grease, airing 7-9pm (eastern), is hosted live from Louisville, Kentucky, by Kim Sorise. It will make one helluva radio tag-team!
Avatar 9:16pm vanhooserd:

There's Morello!
  9:16pm Eargasm!:

two thumbs up from Sandshell for Hank Garland!

Avatar 9:18pm bigplanetnoise:

We are so incredibly excited about the shows we'll be doing and the company we'll be keeping on Drummer!!! January 6th, y'all!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gina Bacon:

Yay! We are.
Avatar 9:20pm Julie P.:

Small amusing factoid: I have a set of married cousins whose names are Shirley Jones and Jack Jones. No, not THE Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

Well, it surely is good company you'll be keeping (bee keeping?). (clears throat)
  9:20pm Miked_76:

ahh, Zappa...my evening is complete.
Avatar 9:20pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - I love that.
Avatar 9:21pm bigplanetnoise:

Uncle Mike - Bee Keeping every week!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Gina Bacon:

That's right! Uncle Michael is on there too!
Avatar 9:21pm huomenta:

Jack Jones seems to have influenced my all-time fave Scott Walker quite a lot; anyone in the know - where should I start with his discography?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Uncle Michael:

Love Boat Theme
Avatar 9:22pm coelacanth∅:

yes my gal, Costa!
Avatar 9:22pm bigplanetnoise:

huomenta - you are 10000% correct. On the ballads, it's sometimes hard to differentiate.
  9:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Big Planet Noise will make the, gulp, 25th program on the Drummer Stream. Multiple shows every day of the week. All with live commenting playlists and archives, just like you know and love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Uncle Michael:

Gal Costa every week!
Avatar 9:23pm coelacanth∅:

yes ^
Avatar 9:23pm bigplanetnoise:

Doug - we are SO proud to become a part of Drummer on WFMU!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Gina Bacon:

We are, indeed!
  9:24pm Sandshell:

I’m so enjoying tonight’s show Bobby. It’s making baking more enjoyable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Sandshell!
Avatar 9:24pm bigplanetnoise:

Sandshell!!! Thrilled that you're here!!! What are you baking?!?
  9:25pm Mod Mokka Matti:

@Gina: That's right! I think I belatedly discovered your weekend show, but haven't had much opportunity to listen yet, trying to juggle way too many things. It seems I only know what day of the week it is by what DJ is on!

@huomenta: Hei! Hyvää Joulua! BTW, I happened to be listening to some of the programs over on YLE, just before I came over here tonight. I think I'm listening to as much Finnish radio as I am of WFMU. At some point, maybe by immersion, I'll finally start to learn more of the ancestral tongue, after so many years of trying... :-)
  9:25pm Tim from LH:

Lots of Brazilian sounds tonight. Bob, are you on a plane to Rio after the show?
Avatar 9:25pm Julie P.:

huomenta, start with the "Wives and Lovers" album and then "Where Love Has Gone." Those two should get you started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gina Bacon:

That's what the archives are for...thanks, Mod Mokka Matti!
Avatar 9:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Tim - honestly - it always reminds me of the holidays. And - I love it all.
  9:26pm Sandshell:

Baking custard pie for Mr Eargasm and cheese cake for my sister and I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Uncle Michael:

I go to Rio..when I'm with my baby...
Avatar 9:26pm huomenta:

uncle michael, love boat theme is all I have had for the last 35 years or so when I heard it and realised the performer was someone called Jack Jones, but thanks, this gave me a warm smile on my face ;)
  9:27pm Eargasm!:

You finally got her to get her own account!
Avatar 9:28pm huomenta:

thanks Julie P for those recommendations!
Avatar 9:29pm coelacanth∅:

(i happen to have listened to some of George's all things must pass album earlier...Jim Gordon on drums, if i remember correctly)
  9:30pm Sandshell:

Made my special Christmas sauce and braciola today. Tomorrow Manicotti.
  9:30pm JohnP:

I know that voice anywhere... BB!!
Avatar 9:30pm bigplanetnoise:

Coel - yes - Jim played drums on that!
  9:30pm Mod Mokka Matti:

Speaking of Scott Walker (who I really appreciate a lot). I'm really interested in that new Ace Records compilation of Scott performing Jacques Brel, that I saw them promoting on their Instagram feed.
Avatar 9:30pm bigplanetnoise:

Sandshell - Try not to disturb Mr. Manicotti upstairs!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Uncle Michael:

MMM, I did a three hour Scott special earlier this year when he passed.
Avatar 9:32pm bigplanetnoise:

JohnP - that voice AND that guitar!!!!!!
Avatar 9:33pm huomenta:

mod mokka matti, cool to hear about you and yle. What a pity it was so much better back whenever, even with rather limited broadcast time. I mean I was a 80s preteen whose head exploded when hearing Gun Club and Einsturzende Neubauten from our humble national radio service - at the risk of sounding like a boring old fart (won't deny) I really can not imagine that happening nowadays. Which is why I am glad there stations like wfmu to give me new musical finds every day
  9:34pm JohnP:

Yes! And Lucille has her own voice too!!!
Avatar 9:35pm bigplanetnoise:

JohnP - playing the next one for you....
  9:36pm JohnP:

can't wait.. !!
Avatar 9:37pm huomenta:

I recently found out from spotify there was a collection of Scott Walker's tv performances there - audio only, sadly, and not too good quality. But then again, all the original material is gone, no picture, just off-air sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Uncle Michael:

That's a very new release, huomenta.
Avatar 9:41pm huomenta:

I heard it like a month ago or so.I am surprised anything exists from that period.
  9:42pm JohnP:

I hadn't heard that one... funky..
  9:42pm Jay S.:

This set is KILLING IT
Avatar 9:42pm coelacanth:

Yay Shuggie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Uncle Michael:

There's the studio album "Sings Songs From His Television Show" or whatever it's called.
Avatar 9:43pm bigplanetnoise:

Jay - thank you SOOOO much!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gina Bacon:

Glad you like, it, Jay S! (:
  9:43pm Mod Mokka Matti:

I think I came across some of the audio only Walker recordings on YouTube not too long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Uncle Michael:

Preston Love's godson!
Avatar 9:43pm bigplanetnoise:

I'll drop a little disturbance in the force with the next one....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gina Bacon:

Shuggie every week!
  9:44pm JohnP:

Agree... killing it
Avatar 9:44pm bigplanetnoise:

Thx, JohnP!
Avatar 9:44pm huomenta:

yes, uncle michael, that is the set I meant.
Avatar 9:44pm Julie P.:

Absolutely slaying it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, JohnP!
  9:45pm Mary:

First song I ever downloaded.... love!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, Julie!
  9:45pm Mod Mokka Matti:

If you have Jimmy McGriff in the playlist, then I sense that you may need some of "the other" Jimmy of the B3...
Avatar 9:46pm bigplanetnoise:

That's why I played it, Ms. Mary!!!
Avatar 9:46pm bigplanetnoise:

Mod Mokka - that "other" Jimmy gets a lotta love from us, for sure!!!!
  9:47pm Doug Schulkind:

At 7pm over on the Drummer Stream, Kim Sorise opened her show with Alice Coltrane. Great minds DJ alike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Uncle Michael:

The new release is different from the studio album.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gina Bacon:

Avatar 9:50pm huomenta:

Uncle Michael, sorry I did NOT mean that one - it is called Live On Air 1968-1969, do check it out if you already have not! Mod Mokka Matti, the youtube stuff you mentioned could be this?
  9:52pm Mod Mokka Matti:

@BPN: I'm glad I got to see Jimmy Smith in person when he came through Seattle, nearly 20 years ago, even if it was well after all the great albums. I was seated just off to his LH side, and perhaps at one of the tables closest to him, when he appeared at Jazz Alley (his "Dot Com Blues" had just been released then).
Avatar 9:52pm huomenta:

sorry Uncle Michael, I noticed your links only now, drunken finhers on a tablet screen are not that fast.:,-)
Avatar 9:52pm Julie P.:

So, if anyone is up late tomorrow night, I am tentatively scheduled to assist a friend of mine with a radio show of the wackiest Christmas music we can think of. This foolishness can be streamed on wprk.org from 11PM-1AM Christmas Eve. Cross your fingers - I haven't done this in a long time!
Avatar 9:52pm bigplanetnoise:

And just so you all know, Gina and I plan to kick things right in the butt hard on our first Drummer show!!!!! January 6th!!!!!
Avatar 9:52pm huomenta:

For some reason Alice>John for me
  9:53pm Mod Mokka Matti:

@huomenta: I think that sounds familiar.
Avatar 9:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Mod Mokka - that's so cool! I never got to see him live.
Avatar 9:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Julie - that's fantastic!!! SO GLAD you're doing that!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm WR:

Cool Julie, thank you for letting us know, will try to tune in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Gina Bacon:

Cool, Julie! Have a great time!!
Avatar 9:54pm Julie P.:
