Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

So is it all just a coincidence that this show is scheduled for Friday afternoons and that Sheila rhymes with tequila? Any mixologists on board today to come up with an official beverage for SBB?

@Rob Kopp: Absolutely!

I love fridays just because of this show <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm The Oscar:

Afternoon! "Kickin'" by Whale is a pretty good "get me pregnant" song, but it's pretty clearly treated as a joke. (Also, any day I get to bring up Whale is a good day).
Avatar 3:33pm ncjay:

...and then there's the odious "you're having my baby" and its even worse answer song
Avatar 3:34pm ncjay:

seems to me there's a Hikaru Utada song with "I want your baby" as a chorus. pretty loud song too

  3:36pm P-90:

Most depressing example for me: Bleecker Street
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm listener james from westwood:

If you haven't gotten to the part where Moss discusses the gentrification of the Breslin into the Ace Hotel, know that it got me to break an upcoming reservation at the hotel for a work anniversary. I was so disgusted that I called mid-read and canceled the room. Was so disgusted at marginalized folks being put in the street that I wanted nothing to do with its cause.

Right? I lived on the Bowery when you still had to walk around sleeping drunks on the sidewalk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I visited Pittsburgh for the first time in 2015, and it felt so much more welcoming as a city vs. the strip mall Manhattan is becoming. The only thing I'm happy about is that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the rep for the part of the Bx I grew up in.

@Shelia since I am back in North Jersey I have been afraid to go in the city because of what and the book are saying
  3:39pm karen eliot:

it’s so disheartening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Passaic River Blues:

@PKNY: After reading his blog years ago, I gave "Vanishing New York" to my father-in-law, a Brooklyn native and partisan, for Christmas. He had the same view: great and necessary book, unrelentingly depressing.

I am absolutely with you on this, Sheila. I left NYC 10 years ago, after being there for 20. I never thought I would ever leave, but almost everything I was there for just disappeared around me... And I'm also having strict new phone rules for myself, glad to see I'm not the only one!
  3:41pm johnzo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm steveo:

Hi Sheila! Great to hear you & your excellent records!
3:44pm Daybreak and the Adventure Begins...:

Shelia you are sadly broadcasting from a similar spot to the lost NYC. I’m coming down to WFMU on Sat for Karaoke, and I was so surprised the 1st time I came down last year and saw how much Monty sticks out like a glorious sore thumb in that part of JC.
It made me so glad that I swag for life!

Daybreak and the Adventure Begins...—I actually walked around Jersey City looking for a slice of pizza at a new spot and it was just so awful walking amongst all those lifeless buildings. HELP!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Passaic River Blues:

@NGH: Fishmans hitting the spot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Michael 98145:

it takes a village to support an FMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Rob Kopp:

Don't know if there are iTunes users on a Mac amongst you, but if so: don't upgrade to OS Catalina! iTunes will be replaced by app Music, and in Music you can only search on 5 fields (Song, Artist, Album, Composer, Playlist) and not any more on the other fields. So not on column Remarks! So here I am with my iTunes library of 40.000 songs and I can't properly search in it anymore. You can't install iTunes on Catalina and you can't go back to OS Mojave! I can't believe Apple removed the filter bar in app Music.
Avatar 3:52pm northguineahills:

@Michael: I see it every day around my bros. and who they hang out w/. All they care about is the potential to make more money and showing said status, political ethics be damned.... (I need one of these jobs to hit so I can get my own place again, soon, even GIS for Disney would work for me [I've worked for the federal gov't before, could that be worse?])
Avatar 3:53pm djsheilab:

listener james from westwood—I haven't gotten to the part about the Breslin + Ace yet. It's not somewhere I frequent but I have DJ'd there a few times.
3:53pm Daybreak and the Adventure Begins...:

Well 1) you can call me just Daybreak, I change the rest of the handle regularly. 2) You get to broadcast from and represent a mental and physical splinter of the correct reality that shall not be removed! 3) If we need to sing our damn troubles away we should all do it at Monty on Saturday, I’ll duet with my mediocre singing voice with anyone. In FMU singing terms, I only put my mouth where my hoof is willing to go (if that sounds creepy, I apologize, sometimes the FMU parlance comes out that way)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Jocelyn pretty good here, can't complain!
Avatar 3:53pm djsheilab:

John from FP, Come to Boonton in Morris county! Ignore the giant Walmart on Whooton st. We still got unique houses and a main st with stores, art, and a venue for high and a venue for low!
  3:56pm John from Florham park:

Today has become such a bummer after hearing how everything in. NYC is becoming gentrification
Avatar 3:56pm ncjay:

@Rob Kopp oh no, thanks for the info! I held off updating (can't call it upgrading) and I would be lost without my filter bar
Avatar 3:57pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Sheila & Sophisticats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Rob Kopp:

I've phoned with the helpdesk of Apple today. All I can do is wait until they've put the filterbar back in app Music... ff they are going to do it. If there are users where the same happened: please fill in the feedback form on Apple/feedback. The more complaints, hopefully the sooner they do something about it.
  3:57pm John from Florham park:

@Daybreak thanks for the invite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm SSS:

I used to visit my sister in the East Village in the mid sixties. I lived there myself in the late 80s, left just as the downward trajectory of gentrification swung to upward one. VERY evident to me that it was a multi decade very planned and nuanced take over of the real estate. The players through those decades? the cops, civil servants in the building departments, and most importantly the Mob.
3:58pm Daybreak and the Adventure Begins...:

No problem John!!!
  3:58pm Jocelyn:

I hate when they merged music on the phone to where when I tap on an artists name instead of taking me to my list of that artist’s music it shows me that artist in their store. And the books app is a mess.

Oops! Left out Giuliani.

  4:12pm Jett:

@djsheilab NYC isn't a shell.of itself, I miss seeing what St.Marks Place was all about, walking through the village, I might as well be walking through some unknown rural.town. Yes it is depressing but New York will always be my home town, anyway!

I would buy an MP3 recording of Sheila’s phone call with NYU.
  4:13pm BH:

I've found things to be weirdly relaxed using my phone in bed at like 2:30am with no noise around. Nothing is particularly going on in the Western Hemisphere at that time and it's very peaceful too. Then I wake up later and put my phone on the charger

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Skurky:

Should I get this book to enrage my native NY'er fiancé?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Passaic River Blues:

@NGH: My wife and I were recently remembering Trump's beyond-pointless, temper-tantrum/gov't shutdown and all the collateral damage it caused. I told her about a guy down in FL who was recently hired for a geography project only to see it gutted due to an interruption of government funding (this was my hazy recollection of your comments from several months ago). She was as appalled as I was. I've been working a series of temporary, contract jobs for the last 3.5 years and nearly always feel the abyss licking at my heels.
@RRN63: Word! Mike Davis' "City of Quartz" was what I gave my cousin when he moved from NY to LA.
Avatar 4:15pm frannie:

Hi Sheila & all, with regards to this topic, I really recommend Ada Calhoun's book St. Mark's Is Dead from a few years ago to those who haven't read it. It covers a lot of these same issues of change and gentrification but ultimately takes a somewhat optimistic outlook on things, and is just a really wonderful read.

But just for me, I can't square it anymore. I'll follow my fave DJs to those last indie haunts across the city if I have to! (and of course support the radio station where I hear them every week!)

@Passaic: Cosign Mike Davis. I grabbed a pamphlet of his back around Bush 41 post-LA uprising that eventually became part, IIRC, of City of Fear. Heavy stuff for this then college senior that I'd never learned anything about.

A reminder to all of you here with me today, we are raising funds to help keep WFMU afloat. Those of you with lovely lil' 45 records next to your names have already donated, so thank you VERY much! Anyone else want a record next to your name? Only $10 or more! Thanks gang!

I looked around. The article is heavily anthologized, but I found a 'free' (legal?) version as part of her book, Reinhabiting Reality.

Hmmm. That Marika Hackman show tomorrow is 10 mins from my wife's old apt downtown. There used to be a used record store in that area. I'm sure Marika will find that little tidbit FASCINATING.

@tony a It's much older than Bowie, originally done by Johnny Mathis, written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the film of the same title. Nina Simone did a nice cover also.

The Future is Female.
If ideas about Democracy or a fairer society mean anything - it has to be
- given that I think there are more females than males - but most of the power of any kind rests with males.
  5:02pm Jett:

It shouldn't be about male or female, it's about the best person for the job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Skurky:

Yeah well for thousands of years it was assumed the best person for the job was a man, so "the Future is Female" is perhaps just acknowledging that women deserve equal consideration for said job for once.
