Avatar 9:02am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff. Along for whatever today's destination should happen to be. Colour me carefree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Jeff Golick:

Hello @Sem! Lemme have some of that carefree-ness, please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Stanley:

Greets Jeff.
Sem, me ol'chum.
  9:07am Doug Schulkind:

Happy Father’s Day, Jeff and all sweet swinging daddies! Back in an hour post-yoga.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:10am holland oats:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Uncle Michael:

Good morning! We're toting D:O to the hotel hot tub. If we have the place to ourselves at this our, we'll listen from there. Greetings from Chicago!
Avatar 9:10am Sem:

Good day, Stanley! Yo, Doug, H:O..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

@Stanley! @Doug! @holland oats! @Uncle Michael (hot-tub bound!)! Nice to see you.
Avatar 🥁 9:26am hyde:

sorry i'm late! the gf ws crashed out in the room with the laptop....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Yer welcome at any time, @hyde.
  9:34am JtotheK:

Hi! Happy Dad Day Dads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @JtotheK! And welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am fred:

Good morning Jeff and all. Nice soundtrack to my reading a PhD thesis about DIY noise (over 700 pages, I'm a third of the way through)
Avatar 🥁 9:37am hyde:

i really hope UM is cranking this Dockstader at the hot tub
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Jeff Golick:

@fred! Glad you're here.

@hyde: well, it's hot tub music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am listener james from westwood:

I would read the heck out of that thesis. Hell, copyediting that would be a dream.

Hey Jeff! Been in since the git-go but puttering around the apartment. Happy as always to hear Spiegel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Uncle Michael:

I wouldn't say "cranking", hyde. We're back in the room.
Avatar 9:52am northguineahills:

Actually have this Human League...
  9:52am Dean:

fred, is it Stephen Graham's Notes from the Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music? It deals in part with DIY noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff Golick:

@listener james! Do you find copyediting harder when you're interested in the material?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Jeff Golick:

@Dean! Did the thesis talk bring you here?

  9:56am Dean:

That's one hypothesis, I suppose. But no, in this case correlation is not cause.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Uncle Michael:

Today, us and the other attendees of my Uncle's birthday weekend in Chicago are going,by motor coach, on a 3 or 4 stop pizza tour, led by the 13-time James Beard-award-winning food reporter for the local ABC affiliate. He' a friend of my cousin.
  9:56am Dean:

What brought me here was...it's Sunday morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Oooooh @UM! Sounds delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Uncle Michael:

Trouble is, we were fed like Christmas geese last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Jeff Golick:

Time to find a new belt hole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am fred:

@Dean and james: It's called "Aux marges du bruit. Une étude de la musique noise et du Do it Yourself" by Sarah Benhaim. In French, and highly unlikely to ever be translated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: In fact the danger there is getting sucked into tangents of fact-checking or Wiki wormholes! The edit might be a bit more attentive but my time spent longer with the effect of less profit on fixed-price jobs.

It's books that are riveting narratives that are really the risk, b/c if the story is compelling (like narrative nonfiction) I'll zoom along faster than is useful for editing or proofing. Proofed a book on the whole Bundy clan mess in the SW that was like that. Had to force myself to go slower while reading!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03am holland oats:

tuning to jeff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am fred:

@Dean: She does cite Stephen Graham's work
  10:05am Dean:

Sounds like she's alluding to Attali, too, perhaps?
Avatar 10:07am northguineahills:

This might be my last day w/ an avatar for a while, as unless I get a miracle, I'll lose my internet tomorrow. (I'm short on funds). But, My phone is good to go for a while...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Ugh, so sorry to hear that, @ngh.
Avatar 10:07am northguineahills:

Jaques Attali?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am fred:

@Dean: She does
  10:08am Dean:

Yes, as in his canonic Bruits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Jeff Golick:

Lacan somebody make a fart joke or something, and bring the brow level down a bit?
  10:11am Dean:

Paul de Man made a pun from the name of Archie Bunker in his Allegories of Reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff Golick:

My book group is now reading Camus' The Stranger, which I've never read. (Unless the Cure song counts.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am listener james from westwood:

Smith and Ciani together are a combo on the level of Mary Lattimore and Julianna Barwick.
Avatar 10:21am northguineahills:

@Jeff: I've read it twice, and even did a report on it for my Sahara History class....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am listener james from westwood:

Also I misread The Tuning Meditation as The Turing Meditation and, you know, I'm giving myself partial credit on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: oooh those would've been good to put in here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Jeff Golick:

@ngh: I think it's good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: I made the same misread.
Avatar 🥁 10:28am hyde:

i liked the Stranger. i had to read it in high school
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am doctorjazz:

Hello Sunday folks!
  10:30am Dean:

Dockstader writes in the 2003 release of the first of three volumes of Aerial that he was listening to short-wave radio for sounds "that occur when there are so many stations on the air, they over-ride each other and something strange emerges from the conflict."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @Dean. Do you have a link, too?
  10:33am Dean:

I was reading either The Stranger or The Fall in my parents' kitchen the night we heard the news of the murder of John Lennon.
  10:34am Dean:

No link, sorry. I transcribed from the liner notes of the first CD in the set. They're among my favorite records.
  10:35am Dean:

I do have a link c/o TD (RIP) himself: https://dockstader.info/compositions/aerial/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jeff Golick:

Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

We're also reading an "answer song" of a book, called The Mersault Investigation, which is told from the POV of the brother of the murdered Arab of The Stranger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Speaking of Lennon, there's a doc on one of the streaming services now, about the recording of Imagine etc., and it really made me sad all over again about losing him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am doctorjazz:

Looks thus Lee, but of Baroque feel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am fred:

@Jeff: I read on another playlist that you saw Bikini Kill. How was it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Uncle Michael:

I'm thinking of visiting the Museum of Broadcast Communications this afternoon.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

They were great, and Kathleen's in great voice. I found the sound in the large theatre to be muddy, but wasn't sure if it was the mix or my own failing hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am doctorjazz:

(Like this Lee, should have read...tapping the phonewhile walking the dogs)
  10:50am Dean:

When docents lead tours at the MBC, do they pause for a word from their sponsors?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Uncle Michael:

Yes, and when they have to go to the toilet they hold up a card that says "please stay tuned, we're experiencing technial difficulties".
  10:53am Dean:

Was listening yesterday to Paul Smoker's Genuine Fables. We lost him just over three years ago.
  10:54am Dean:

And when they're forgetful they hold up a card with the Indian head test pattern.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Uncle Michael:

And at closing time they play the national anthem.
  10:56am Dean:

And on occasion Ron Popeil rents the place and takes over for the whole dayl.
  10:57am Dean:

(So, Jeff, care to comment again about Attali and Lacan?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am fred:

I wish I could see Bikini Kill. And I just learned that I'll miss Sleater-Kinney: I'll be at a dance show. The downside of having booked 49 tickets for next season (including 10 in November!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Uncle Michael:

The closest thing I expect to see to Ron is Marshall Brodeen commemorated in the Chicago Television Gallery. I think TV Magic Cards were marketed across the country.
Avatar 🥁 11:00am hyde:

does anyone else remember when tv stations would play "High Flight" before they signed off for the night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Uncle Michael:

I don't know what that is, hyde.
  11:02am Dean:

I remember odd treacly tunes at night's end, but not "High Flight" per se.
Avatar 🥁 11:03am hyde:

@UM maybe they only did it on some Boston channel i used to watch. it's a poem by John Magee that they used to play over visuals of fighter planes soaring thru the stratosphere. it's weird, i can actually recite the thing having seen it on signoff so many times
  11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Andrew Cyrille played live on my show. It was the day Dizzy Gillespie died, and Cyrille dedicated his performance to him.
Avatar 🥁 11:06am hyde:

@Doug whoa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Uncle Michael:

We're heading out...thanks for the morning hot tub music, Jeff!

Take care, everyone.
  11:08am Dean:

I read somewhere that Martin von Haselberg (a.k.a. Harry Kipper of the Kipper Kids, and Mr. Bette Midler) appears in the documentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for tuning in, @UM! Happy pizza!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

@Doug's back! (...is probably all loose and stretched out now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: a young Bette is in the old footage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Doug's lower back is a problem. His ears, however, are in a beautiful state.
Avatar 11:14am Sem:

Just the thing for right now, Fairport. Thank you, Jeff.
Avatar 🥁 11:14am hyde:

i love this version of this song
  11:14am Dean:

Von Haselberg used to host a local public broadcasting show out of Santa Monica about commodities trading. Suit and tie. The antithesis of the Kippers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am doctorjazz:

Love this Fairport cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

Are there any better interpreters of Dylan?
Avatar 11:17am northguineahills:

I love all of Dylan covers Fairport does.....
  11:17am Dean:

There's at least one equally good Dylan cover artist: Jimmy LaFave. Listened last night to one of his records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am doctorjazz:

And I purchased this Peggy Lee album after hearing this on DO some time back, fine album.
Avatar 🥁 11:20am hyde:

good ol' Youtube. I found the High Flight video with the Lockheed fighter plane, and lots of people in the comments are talking about how they remember it from tv signoff. (www.youtube.com...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Remember when Con Funk Shun covered "Mr Tambourine Man"?!
  11:24am Dean:

Ha! Was gonna give props to High on Fire's "Lay Lady Lay"!
Avatar 🥁 11:26am hyde:

Dave the Spazz played a spectacular version of the Living Voices doing Like A Rolling Stone a few weeks back
  11:30am Dean:

That last track covered Dylan pretty well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Jeff Golick:

I do not remember that, @Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

I really wish I had a version of Peter Laughner's "Visions of Johanna" to play, but that one will have to suffice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

Also really wish that Jamie Saft song was not weirdly truncated to 33 seconds. Not sure what's up there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am doctorjazz:

I was wondering about the Saft, wanted to hear more.
  11:38am Dean:

Maybe the CD is supposed to spin at 16rpm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

You should have spun the 78, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

@doc: if you don't have that record, I am fairly confident in saying that you will really enjoy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am doctorjazz:

I'm sure you're right, @Jeff, haven't heard much Saft I didn't like
  11:47am Doug Schulkind:

We’re driving now to brunch. Daughter is at the wheel, but I exerted executive Father’s privilege and commandeered the stereo. Take us there, D:O Radio!!
Avatar 11:47am northguineahills:

I didn't know this YLT song when I first heard the album (I got into YLT before Dylan).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Jeff Golick:

Wheeee and ayiyieeee @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am doctorjazz:

I always found the chords on Threw It All Away both basic and jarring at the same time, YLT get that feel really well.
Avatar 11:52am Sem:

Energizing set of Dylan covers. Much obliged, Daddy Jeff. See you again at this destination next time, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Brian in UK:

Excuse me, is this the Pilates class?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Stanley:

Well, this is good. Pity it has to end.
Have a good day off, next week, Jeff.

Ay-up Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: sure, why not. Hi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

Thanks,Jeff. happy Father's Day all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, as ever, for being here, @Sem, @Stanley, @doctorjazz.

Will be going a tad overtime today, btw.
Avatar 11:57am northguineahills:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

My pleasure, @ngh. Hope to see your leonine face again soon.

Thanks, @Doug. Happy brunching!

Welcs, @hyde!
  12:02pm Dean:

Happy Father's Day, Happy Sunday, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, and to you, @Dean!
  12:04pm Dean:

Was hoping for a cover of "Jokerman"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Jeff Golick:

Sweet. I've heard a recent version by Vampire Weekend (!) that is also really good.
  12:06pm Dean:

Hard to outplay Sly & Robbie, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Brian in UK:

Nice saucy SEXtet cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm doctorjazz:

No purchase links today (but still didn't get or Scot free, Saft Plays Dylan in my cart....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Jeff Golick:

Sorry? (I might need to ask you to send me that cut that got mangled, @doc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Brian in UK:

Spirit's cover of Like a Rolling Stone still resonates.
Avatar 12:10pm northguineahills:

Nice Built to Spill!

  12:16pm Dean:

I'm telling ya, check out Jimmy LaFave's series of "bootleg" records, Trail. Lots of lovely tributes to Dylan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Dean. I've had those "saved for later" purchase for years but haven't pulled the trigger...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm doctorjazz:

Jim's Watchtower must bye the most amazing one...
  12:18pm Dean:

Saw him not too long before he passed away. Shook his hand. Love that guy.
  12:18pm Dean:

(Meaning Jimmy L., not Jimi H.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm doctorjazz:

Don't know LaFave, Amazon has 1 Called Trail, is that it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm doctorjazz:
