Dr. John poses a terrible filing problem: File under R? J? D? And if under D, is it "Do..." or "Dr"?
No, Jeff, I never look behind me. That's where the monsters live.

If you've never "gone" there, it's at the bottom of the main WFMU page, in the 2nd column under "Programming." Click on "Advanced Search" then "Artist/Band Browser." Then, choose the letter of the artist's *first* name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am

Dr John is filed under D-r in the WFMU library. We take the letters in the name literally. So Doctor Umuez Diva is under D-o.

No yoga for me this morning. Too tired. I was kept up for hours overnight by a dog on the freak-out. Was it a terrible thunderstorm or fireworks that spooked the poor pup, you might ask. No, it was teenagers at the temple next door to us, singing in Hebrew abandon at three in the morning. It seems that part of the annual Shavuot celebration at this temple is the let the kids go wild for one night. And wild the went. Kind of sweet, actually, but the dog was terrified.

Dean:

For LG upthread re: filing Dr. John records. I'm not 100% certain, but it appears Library of Congress established "Dr. John" as an authorized personal name (i.e., they don't refer you from that name to "Rebbenack, Max"). Further, LC filing rules provide, "File abbreviations exactly as written." Thus, you'd file in the D-Rs.

Thanks for that, @Dean. And nice to see you!

@Andrew Waterloo! He's nothing if not generous. (Like you!)
  10:59am
Listener Gregory:

@Dean, why hadn't I met you and WFMU in 1985 when I first started to file my LPs?
However, filing items exactly as written can cause a problem when the dumb record companies aren't consistent, and so you can get "Dr" for one and "Doctor" in another, and when you find the wrong place, you wonder why that one album is missing.
  11:00am
Peter from DE:

  11:03am
Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz, Arrrgggghhhhh!
I'm probably moving in a couple of months, so that will give me a chance to go through every single possession, hopefully finding things that have been lost since the last move.
  11:04am
Dean:

That's true, LG, which is why you have to operate an "authority file" of established names, with cross-references (part of a system that librarians and archivists refer to as a "syndetic structure") from variants, alternatives, etc. Hence, even if the label prints "Doctor...," your system cross-refers to "Dr..."

Gah yes @LG. Great ears (on your part) and slippery fingers (on mine).
  11:19am
Dean:

To my mind, though, the "corruption" (as if capitalism weren't already rotten to the core), preceded Google. In the early days of the opening of the Internet, both pre- and post-Web, to public consumption, numerous hyper advocates naively or malevolently sold a bill of goods about, e.g., "virtual community" and such.

Oh, terrific! A new Trovesi!

I used that cut (Law Years) to try out new CD players a few years ago, and so it's very familiar.
  11:22am

Also, it should be said that Haggard became a critic of US corporations and government in his later years, though perhaps not with a sophisticated theoretical perspective. He just new that average working people were getting screwed.
