The Making of a YouTube Radical (Kevin Roose in the NYT, June 8, 2019)

YouTube’s CEO refuses to admit the site radicalizes users in spite of all the evidence (Business Insider, June 11): "YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki was asked whether she believes that YouTube is radicalizing its users and politics during an interview on Monday at Recode's Code Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. Wojcicki would not outright deny this but said that she believes that the platform offers a 'diversity of opinions.' She also said that YouTube is clamping down on its video recommendations for any videos that are classed as 'borderline content.'"

The problem is all these business models are based on extreme automation… Which is not there yet… But they really want it to be. So we’re all a distraction from their end goal: Reading our minds and giving us exactly what we want before we even know we want it.

For Damn K: Does digital audio production lead to more comfort, confusion or complication?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Webhamster Henry:

Digital recording is under constant media changing, so old digital recordings are actually harder to reproduce in their original form than , say 78s and cylinders. That's just the audio formats - disk file systems and audio DAWS all are difficult to make futureproof.
Avatar 6:29pm geezerette:

Piano rolls for player pianos were actually recordings of performances by people.Gershwin recorded some.
Avatar 6:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

How does self-promoting & distributing on YouTube & podcasts relate to being a 20thCentury garage band making one 45 & hoping to get on a local station? & from there to major distribution...
Labels used to Promote - but now in the unwieldy firehose of Choice - who Promotes anything? Have the interwebz balanced out the Clear Channel corporate centralization in any positive way?
Avatar 6:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

They change Platforms specifically to NOT be retro-compatible. You must have this year's Apple...
  6:30pm JakeGould:

Tiny wind up music boxes are just tiny kalimbas that work with tiny digital rolls.
Avatar 6:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Compare hand animation to CGI. Everything on 'Electric Ladyland' or Sgt. Pepper is - 'handmade' - not the same thing dialed in by everyone...

Steely Dan never had no mumble.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Webhamster Henry:

@geezerette - that could be, but they were definitely edited! Ofthen there was a third hand stuck in there. Some of the rolls I had for my Ampico were definitely augmented, and here's where I drop the name "Conlon Nancarrow".
Avatar 6:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Brian Eno said - a long time ago - the problem is not that there aren't enuff things a Studio can do. There are too many! The thing is having something to record...
Avatar 6:34pm geezerette:

@Webhamster, thanks, makes sense!
Avatar 6:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The series 'Soundbreaking' is very good. Beck notes - all periods of Recording exist @ once now.
  6:35pm JakeGould:

Digitally remaster “Metal Machine Music.”
Avatar 👻 6:35pm Bas NL:

It's very popular to master perfect digital recordings through old vintage gear! To give it that little organic feel.
Avatar 6:35pm BigCat:

Developers will always use digital to get their way, or just to make things easier.
So they'll take shortcuts without asking anyone.

H.... almost forgot: They're all a bunch of fucking males!
  6:36pm JakeGould:

A lot of digital recording has brought the painful tedium of going to a music store (*cough* Guitar Center *cough*) to the comfort of your home.
Avatar 6:36pm geezerette:

Bas, yes, very popular.
Avatar 👻 6:36pm Bas NL:

  6:36pm JakeGould:

All of these ad algorithms are bias amplifiers.
  6:36pm random listener abroad:

Whilst I’m all for imperfections and happy accidents on analogue recording, digital provides a full studio for any diy band. From experience, the cost of hiring an engineer and renting a studio is getting so costly (in the recent 5 years) many of my friends/bands just record to laptop and use the money for touring.
Avatar 6:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Medium is the Massage. Things being mixed to Earbuds - & generations who have no time & no interest in anything but smoothed out perfections...
I think of it as McDonalds MANUFACTURING every fry exactly the same. Fine - if that's all you have appetite for !!
Avatar 6:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The NASA analogy is good - because we went to the Moon w/ huge reel-to-reel antiques that aren't as powerful as your phone...
Pepper was only 4 track analog - but also great microphones & George Martin Arranging &tc. ...
  6:38pm random listener abroad:

@Bas NL you’re are so right! Recording to laptop > add multiple tracks of audio noise to scratch it up. It’s strange it’s come to this in a way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm mrdonutsu:

Iggy Pop has mentioned more than once that he has discovered a track - that he is now playing on his radio show - because it was suggested by an algorithm.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Webhamster Henry:

WFMU has lots of data that it never exploits! For instance: all these chat logs.
Avatar 6:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

People are actually concerned about AI Composing !...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Binary digital (ones and zeros) doesn't work well for music. We need a tri-ary digital system that allows for flats and sharps.
Avatar 6:40pm TDK60:

radio is invisible, it might get /your own/ imagination's images going...
Avatar 6:40pm geezerette:

I loved record stores, video stores, "vintage" clothing stores, single owner/single location bookstores, human scaled art galleries...places where human interaction was part of the experience.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Webhamster Henry:

The thing that engages WFMU listeners is the astonishing lack of ads, support announcements, interminable fundraising, and commercialism in general.
