Hi Adriene.

Ahoy! Lera Boroditsky rules.

Adriene, I am going to miss this over the summer. Have you considered keeping it rolling in podcast form?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:09pm fred:

Wow, I spent years looking for that Sigur Ros song which was how they ended their shows, before they finally released it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 6:11pm Booz:

I have enjoyed this show so much. Very reassuring in some way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 6:12pm Ike:

Adriene, have you ever heard the FM pirates of Flatbush? Many of them broadcast in Haitian Kreyol or French. Some interfere with WFMU, in fact. You might find this interesting:

I'll never forget when I dreamed in French during my six-week stay in Paris. Immersion was the best way to learn. I spoke Polish until I was three years old at home with my family and then learned how to read English.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:16pm fred:

I never listened live before, but I wanted to say goodbye, hoping you'll be back someday. Archives are not the same when the show isn't on anymore
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:17pm northguineahills:

@Krys O, it usually take me 3-5 days to remember speakable Quebecois or Mexican Spanish, so, by the time I can speak it, it's time for me to go back home....
Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 6:17pm adriene:

@Ike I haven't had a chance to really explore and listen to that map yet - thanks for the recommendation the Harian Kreyol stations are definitely an incentive to start!
Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 6:19pm adriene:

@ultradammo I should be back in September with new places to visit. And if you have anything you'd really like to hear on the show let me know
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:19pm TDK60:

I'll just relax as you do dial the radio, Adriene.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:22pm ultradamno:

Cats have a language, for sure. About 100 sounds they can make.
  Thu. 5/30/19 6:23pm Noel:

Wow! Hearing that it's over for the summer, I've just now realized how much I love this program.
Thank you, Adriene, for what I think is a truly great show. I surely do hope to hear you again in the autumn.

And they recognize their names when called, they just don't care. www.sciencenews.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 6:27pm diciassette:

I can recognize my name when my mother talks about me on the phone in Tagalog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:29pm Krys O.:

My dad had to speak in Russian when he talked to his youngest sister who lived in Belarus. She grew up under Soviet occupation in the region of Poland that my father's family lived. I would have conversations with my parents wherein I spoke English and they spoke Polish. We understood each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Eskimo people have about 100 words for snow.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:32pm JakeGould:

I’m not kvetching the show is gone with the summer schedule, but I am happy it has existed so far. Really great radio! Thanks Adriene.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:33pm northguineahills:

@Krys: That's like the Spanglish I hear in NYC, the parents speak Spanish, and the kids respond back in English...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:34pm listener 126464:

Joe Rey has 17 different words for snow (Fountains of Wayne)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 6:35pm diciassette:

Krys O, that's very cool! I've seen/heard that sort of thing in films and over the fence in the backyard. Exactly, ngh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:35pm Krys O.:

@ngh: Yes! That happens in my town too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:35pm Krys O.:

LOL@ listener 126464! I forgot about that song!
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:36pm northguineahills:

(because I lived on an American base), it took me almost 3 years to speak passable Japanese as a kid. So, I could only use it the last summer I was there before I went back to the States.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:36pm TDK60:

I tried to learn Esperanto once but got lazy; still trying to learn Spanish...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:36pm Krys O.:

This is AMAZING!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:37pm ultradamno:

I'm pretty sure The Residents made up a few more for Eskimo.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:37pm northguineahills:

The confusing part about Esperanto, is that they combine the grammar structure of so many Indo-European language families (at least it's confusing for me). The vocabulary makes sense to me.
Thu. 5/30/19 6:39pm judy from croton:

I love your show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:39pm Krys O.:

My parents pronounced 'th' as 'd'.

GREAT SHOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:40pm listener james from westwood:

Glad to hear you'll be back on a future schedule! This has been one of the best new programs on FMU in years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:41pm Krys O.:

I concur. The adventurousness of this show is quite exciting.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:45pm northguineahills:

@Krys: da! (errr.. tak!)

There's a nice dystopian series on Netflix where Poland and the Iron Curtain never falls. I've been hearing more Polish (and Russian), since I left Brooklyn.
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:45pm TDK60:

I saw there's an ongoing attempt to revive Cornish; think I saw there are maybe 100 speaking...[?]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 5/30/19 6:48pm listener 126464:

Furbish?
Avatar Thu. 5/30/19 6:50pm northguineahills:

@TDK: Cornish went extinct in the 19th c., but, some academics made dictionaries from the elderly survivors. In the 1960s, there have been efforts to revive it based on other Celtic languages (especially Welsh), and now there are a few thousand considered conversational, and it's now taught in some schools and universities...
Swag For Life Member Thu. 5/30/19 6:50pm adriene:

You all are being too nice. I'm glad you've enjoyed the show (so far) I've really enjoyed sharing it with you! The show coming into this time slot is Indian Ocean World with Sonika which sounds like it will be a nice alternative.
