Although, the Gavin Menzies' book, "1421, the year China discovered America" is considered quackery by most historians, it is considered very possible that Zheng He got far up the current Russian coast close to the Bering Straight.

The Jiajing Emperor was a bit eccentric. Plus, there was a bit of internal revolt, so he turned inwards as he was afraid of merchants getting wealthy to the point they could be a threat to his rule, so, he cut China off...
