Avatar 10:19pm Erica:

That's ok Kurt. I knew Larry would be on vacation this week. Just didn't know what to expect of the fill-in show for this week.
Avatar 10:22pm northguineahills:

Yeah, kurt w/ the minas touch (or is he king [of] minos)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm chresti:

Glad tidings Kurt!
Avatar 10:23pm northguineahills:

Is this a response to Prince Fari's "10 Commandments"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm chresti:

Prince Buster
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm doctorjazz:

Hadn't heard recent Specials music, cool!
Avatar 10:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

yes and yes, response to prince buster.
Avatar 10:29pm northguineahills:

I only have the Prince Far I version....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm chresti:

have not heard Far I's version..
Avatar 10:33pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i'm nor familiar with far i's either, but she namechecks prince buster at the beginning of the track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm coelacanth∅:

Wow
this!
Avatar 10:35pm Erica:

i'm confused to what genre of music this is. World? Avant-garde?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard prince buster's and the specials' versions on wfmu before, but prince far i's version i heard first -by a few decades!
Avatar 10:36pm Kurt Gottschalk:

avant world?
  10:38pm Dean:

Hamza el Din at McCabe's in Santa Monica ages ago: spectacular. This album on vinyl is one of the very best recordings of live acoustic music ever. The tar rattles the air.
Avatar 10:38pm northguineahills:

Wow, I recognized Hamza El Din's oud in the first second, and I don't even have this album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm coelacanth∅:

"off your guard"?
(caught me off-guard anyway)
Avatar 10:39pm northguineahills:

@Erica: Just wait until Kurt does a whole set of Prince, then you'll really be confused!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm doctorjazz:

Water Lily records, known for great sound.
  10:41pm Dean:

I once had lunch at an Indian vegetarian restaurant in Cerritos, CA, in which the music played over the PA had a distinctive quality. I said to the proprietor, "This sounds like a Kavi Alexander recording." (He's Water Lily Acoustics.) The proprietor replied, "He was here yesterday. He gave me this promotional copy of an upcoming disk."
Avatar 10:42pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hamza el din was deep amazing. i got to see him once at the knitting factory on leonard street. i took my dad!

(&ngh, ha!)
Avatar 10:45pm northguineahills:

All of my Hamza El Din is on Nonesuch....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm chresti:

sure love this.
  10:46pm Dean:

The Water Wheel on Nonesuch is certainly a must-have.
Avatar 10:46pm Kurt Gottschalk:

dean, that's awesome.
chresti, glad you're digging.
Avatar 10:51pm northguineahills:

yes, indeed, Dean. I'm out in 10 mins for a noise/DIY show. Thanks, Kurt!
Avatar 10:55pm Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for dropping by, ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm doctorjazz:

Taj! Cool set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm doctorjazz:

(I have this record, but didn't remember the track)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm coelacanth∅:

sweet one of my favorite family stone songs
-and strangely not included on the original release
Avatar 11:31pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ridiculous that this live recording wasn't released at the time, when live records were king.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

...i meant the studio version, which was recorded during the dance to the music sessions but left off that album.
i never heard this version but it sounds like (via drjazz) it wasn't included on that original release either.

-glad to hear this. didn't even know it existed.
Avatar 11:37pm Kurt Gottschalk:

filmore east 4cd set, fantastic, only recently issued.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

...but yeah, the live stuff wasn't released at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

oh shit.4 cds?! i want it!
...i cannot afford it.
Avatar 11:40pm Erica:

I never knew Sheila E had a patriotic covers album (I just looked it up).
Avatar 11:41pm Erica:

This sounds like it could've been part of a charity record album like "We Are the World" or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm doctorjazz:

I had read it was released, but hadn't heard it (more than 2 CDs these days, don't have the time or attention span...)
Avatar 11:42pm Kurt Gottschalk:

haha, yeah, it's a bit of a cheesy record but i like it.
  11:46pm Dean:

Archie f-ing Shepp! Picked up another of his records with Horace Parlan recently. So damn fine.
Avatar 11:47pm Kurt Gottschalk:

man i got to sit in on his sound check at the vision festival last summer. so relaxed, so much power.
  11:49pm Dean:

At Yoshi's a few years ago he was ... relaxed, settled on a stool for most of the show. Glad I got to hear him. I wonder whether he'll reappear in these parts.
Avatar 11:51pm Kurt Gottschalk:

he seems to like europe quite well, thank you very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Kurt!
Avatar 11:53pm Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for tuning in!
  11:55pm V Priceless:

Thanks KG! Just read it’s the 45th anniversary of Diamond Dogs today! Woo!
Avatar 11:55pm Kurt Gottschalk:
