Avatar 9:09am randyfrommichigan:

listening to the Swingle Singers song, is this genre what they call Good Life? My son was telling me about it last night, said it's fairly popular with the college kids which surprised me.

@GrannySpicyTuna: Did you lose it in transit?! It might have fallen into an old episode of Circle Time, I'll scour the archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Granny Spicy Tuna:

VincentNifigance: i often wind up in Circle Time, which is a pleasant diversion, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am VincentNifigance:

@GrannySpicyTuna That was my Monday morning, I miss Mark R. I have a tshirt to soak up my tears.
Avatar 9:21am Kurt Gottschalk:

good morning, everyone! thanks for stopping by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Yeah, whatever happened to Circle Time? Well, i am eternally grateful for the endless archives. Only there's always something compelling on the live streams, so who has time for archives?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Granny Spicy Tuna:

OK, i gotta get myself ready for airport fun. I will have WFMU in my portable gadget, so hopefully will keep up with this endless bounty of recorded bliss. xoxox
  9:25am Mark R.:

What a lovely coincidence to find some of my old listeners on here like Vincent and Granny--as luck would have it, I'm filling in for Jeff Conklin on a Sunday/Monday in May. It's not listed on the website yet, but it'll be the Sunday evening of the 19th/20th at midnight. But Speaking of folks I miss, I miss Kurt having a regular slot.
  9:25am Mark R.:

I'm digging this Patrick Higgins track so so very much! What a perfect piece for a rainy Friday morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Hi, Mark R.! Great news, i'll keep an eye out for updates.
  9:26am Mark R.:

Have good trip wherever you're headed, Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am YETI BOB:

hi Kurt. loving the music today. how about some "bachianas brasilieras? (villa-lobos)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Phillippe Bastille:

This Miyao is such a wonderful thing to be the first song I hear in the morning!
Avatar 9:47am Seanbelly:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Smilty69:

Good morning, Kurt & friends! This music is making work a lot less stressful. Thanks!
  9:49am Mark R.:

Say this Bach fella wrote some purty good tunes. I reckon you could do a whole hour of his stuff and it would be mighty fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am VincentNifigance:

@Mark R: That's great to hear you're doing more fill ins, as you might have seen you are MISSED, Sir!
  9:51am Mark R.:

Very kind of you to say. As far as a regular slot goes, there are several FMU streams, so one never knows where one might turn up eventually. Stay tuned.
Avatar 9:54am TDK60:

..can anybody tell me what a continuo is? Is it a woodwind? a keyboard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Nulsh:

Wrong speed?! I thought it was Ween!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Philthy woman:

Kurt! Glad to hear you back. This mornin is spiffin up
  9:57am Mark R.:

(in baroque music) an accompanying part that includes a bassline and harmonies, typically played on a keyboard instrument and with other instruments such as cello or lute.
"the piece is scored for flute, violin, viola da gamba, and continuo"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am YETI BOB:

Ludwig Wittgenstein's brother Paul was a pianist who lost his right arm in World War I, and continued his career one-handed. Much of the left-handed piano repertoire that exists was created for him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Ike:

Careful saying JA is "on assignment" -- as you implied yourself, some might assume that means he's dead. Oh wait, maybe dead is specifically "permanently on assignment". So if JA is only temporarily on assignment, does that mean he's just visiting Heaven and/or Hell today? What kind of records is he going to bring back from there for us?
9:59am PERSONATOR from Highland Park NJ:

I’m on

I loved volunteering yesterday for the record fair loadout in JC.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am YETI BOB:

Brahms was friends with Wittgenstein, he almost certainly arranged this for him. You can find videos of Paul Wittgenstein playing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am VincentNifigance:

@Ike JA is CIA. That opening Everley/Rolnick thing is used in Psy Ops and interrogation.
Avatar 10:03am Kurt Gottschalk:

tdk, what mark said. 'continuo' is kind of a bass line and was often written without a specified instrument. it's kind of the support part.

yeti, fascinating about wittgenstein, i had no idea.

ike: glenn has been saying that x ray is on assignment for years when he would take a week off.
  10:06am Mark R.:

PS I had to look it up--my comment was literally cut and pasted from Websters. I thought it was some sort of flute, too!
Avatar 10:07am Kurt Gottschalk:

looking stuff up is how we learn stuff and stuff. not looking stuff up is how we don't learn. no shame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am YETI BOB:

the wittgenstein family story is really crazy. the father was a musician, he had 5 sons and he forbade them from going into music despite their talents, he wanted them to be businessmen. 3 of the 5 sons committed suicide (!). then the father decided to let the other 2 do whatever they wanted. Paul became a pianist, and Ludwig became one of the most important philosophers of his day.
Avatar 10:09am Kurt Gottschalk:

yeti, amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

Yeti Bob, your Wittgenstein story makes me think about that line from Anna Karenina - all happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way...
Avatar 10:14am TDK60:

..thanks for the explanation. It just sounds funny to me, listing instruments and then "continuo."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Smilty69:

@Yeti Was Paul Wittgenstein a beery swine who was just as schloshed as Schlegel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Ike:

It's the Twitter age. Who even remembers what happened a few weeks ago? Those few weeks were years ago! Or decades? Centuries? What am I *TALKING* about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am YETI BOB:

@Smilty69: AFAIK that was Ludwig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am YETI BOB:

@tdk60: it can also mean "the group of instruments that play the continuo part"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am melinda:

Enjoying the selections.
  10:22am V Priceless:

Chalky Chiller Check-in! Woo!
Avatar 10:23am TDK60:

..now I won't walk into a musical instrument store and ask where the continuo section is...
  10:30am Bob a:

Just came in from the garage. Heard the sirens. Looked out on the street. Nothing. Came back in. Heard the sirens again. Then realized it was the radio.
Avatar 10:31am TDK60:

..how much will that original cover LP of the Beatles' "Yesterday and Today" cost this year? $600.00?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am YETI BOB:

"a,t ,ot scja;bem" seemed like a believable title for a poet like Jandl! Here's one of his poems: www.fen-net.de...
  10:41am matty from brooklyn:

Didn't he hang out with Emanuel Kant? I heard he was a real pissant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Ken From Hyde Park:
