A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good afternoon Trouble (and listeners), it's a lovely sunny day here in the county of Hampshire, but with a cold wind. Only 11 degrees (say 52 degrees in American) in the shade

If you're taking girl talk requests I want to hear "Rebel Without a Pause." I will also accept anything by Heart, or this Kohei Amadu.

The BBC World Service, trying to teach people to speak like Lizzie Windsor by shortwave. I know English by Radio was popular, but I wonder how many of the listeners actually tried to follow these instructions at the time

Trouble, not even BBC presenters talk like that any more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mike. How's it going?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Phillippe Bastille:

I do wonder, seriously, if there are slight variations in bird calls if flocks are separated by continents
Avatar 9:46am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

Phillippe, there are certainly local accents among some bird populations. I've heard differences in the Song Thrush and Blackbird in different parts of the country
Avatar 9:48am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

I expect the more complicated the song, the more 'improvisation' you find with individual birds

@Kevin That's cool, thanks. I know the starling is all over the world, got me wondering if the South African version sounds any different than the South Jersey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am melinda:

Nice segue. I have fond memories of hearing them do this song at a club in Winooski VT around the time the album came out, hadn't heard the album yet.
Avatar 9:51am Magda:

good Morning Everyone. I am having a weird morning too.
  9:52am Listener Robert:

On hearing that, my visiting friend Greg said "I Pity the Country" was one of the best pieces he'd ever heard. He had me look here to find out what it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Dave in Vermont:

@Melinda, that was Higher Ground, which is now in So Burlington.
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

Note: Since the last election, it's no longer distressing to see Scott Walker's name on the playlist. It's quite nice, in fact.
Avatar 9:55am βrian:

Ah Winooski. I remember it fondly, despite living directly beneath the flight path.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Trouble:

sorry to hear@roberto. but that is their job, somewhat, at this age...
Avatar 9:57am Magda:

Winooski is a nice hike up that hill to Burlington
Avatar 9:58am Magda:

I need to so visit the Burlington Area again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am FletcherNYC:

So many great Gillian Welch memories from seeing them for the first time after walking down a secret trail to a swampy amphitheater in St Augustine Florida to completely unplugged singing Long Black Veil after the sound curfew in Town Hall.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Trouble:

hah,no@brian, but saving half of your salary should be started to pay for the crazy tuition...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am melinda:

@Dave we also saw Jonathan Richman there, I still have the poster from that show. We lived on the other side of the state so it was a big deal to see shows in the Burlington area, only did it a few times.
Avatar 10:05am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

I only started listening to WFMU every day about 3 weeks ago, so I'm no expert, but is there a more eclectic show than this one on the station? It's hard to imagine that there could be
Avatar 10:05am Lixiviated Life:

"Trouble,. Trouble again"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Trouble:

@kevin_ringwood: i am pretty all over the place, it's true.

One semester's in-state tuition at UW-Madison is $5,277.76 right now. And it's been frozen for a while.
  10:07am Listener Robert:

Actually, Kevin, there are indeed others that may be slightly more eclectic. Gaylord Fields and Irwin Chusid come to mind, for instance.
Avatar 10:07am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

Trouble, 'eclectic' is good. Actually it's really great!
Avatar 10:07am Itzall Ablurr:

Good morning Trouble, good morning all. Interesting artwork this morning, I've been trying to get a handle on it for a few minutes.
A lot going on there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Z-pulpa:

Goodmorning Trouble and listener friends! I got to listen to the first hour of today's Modern World on my headphones among the beautiful blooming trees on my walk to work, hoping to have a calm rest of the day.
  10:08am Listener Robert:

Also for eclectic, although he's not on the current schedule, there's Bob Brainen.
Avatar 10:09am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

Robert, thank you. I heard Irwin for the first time last night and was very impressed. Gaylord Fields is on past my bedtime, so I'll take a listen to the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Phillippe Bastille:

@Kevin Yeah, Irwin came to mind for eclectic. SheilaB has a lot of different styles and origins on SBB, though most of it is female fronted.
Avatar 10:12am βrian:

@melinda: Whereabouts? I used to live in the Monkton area, south of BVT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Phillippe Bastille:

That Yasmine Hamdan was wonderful... I'd give it two clicky stars if I could.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Ike:

@Kevin UK, I'd agree with LR -- probably Gaylord. And maybe Joe McG.? And if you like this, check out Samantha on Sundays before Gaylord, if you haven't already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Trouble:

john allen, scott mcdowell , joe mggasko are all pretty free form, covering lots of genres within their shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Phillippe Bastille:

@Trouble of the three, I think Joe is the most accessible. He was my gateway DJ to a lot of other shows. I can even listen to Bryce while I'm working now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Z-pulpa:

Zoe B. has her own amazing free form eclectic style!
Avatar 10:16am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

Ike, Trouble, thank you. I've already got Joe McGasko marked as a favourite, and I'll check out the others. The problem is, there just aren't enough hours in the day to listen to everything I want to hear. There are worse problems to have, I suppose
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Phillippe Bastille:

This Shannon Shaw {two heart emojis}
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Kevin - You might also want to add Doug Schulkind's program to your list. Friday mornings on the Drummer Stream. www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Ike:

I love, love, love Vermont.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Phillippe Bastille:

@Kevin you know you've gone around the sun a time or two when songs you've clicky starred pop up on a playlist and you start to clicky star them again because you know you love them but forgot you heard them before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Dave in Vermont:

@Melinda I saw Jonathan Richman at ArtsRiot last year, what a sweet show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Trouble:

that's not an age problem@phillipe: that's a wfmu problem. songs can song different when placed in between different kinds of music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Stephen O:

@Kevin- Zoe's show and Radio Ravioli have been taking fantastic journeys lately. True, there isn't enough time for all the greatness here.
Avatar 10:29am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

Z-Pulpa, Phillippe, Ken, Stephen O, Trouble, and everyone - many thanks for the suggestions, I'm starring all of them. As I get older I find my musical tastes have broadened enormously and that's why I wish I'd found WFMU sooner. Anyway, it's 3.30 here and the rest of my day is going to be spent on conference calls, so I'll catch you next week!
  10:30am John from Florham Park:

@Phillipe one of my favorite DJs is shelia b on Friday’s at 3 that is appointment listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Webhamster Henry:

Even the shuffle-mode songs on the streams (Ichiban, Drummer Some, Sheena) is pretty darn entertaining and eclectic. But the actual hosted shows also up the eclecticism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Webhamster Henry:

Also, @kevin_ringwood_UK, there are 20 years of archives, so there's no reason to miss anything.
  10:31am John from Florham Park:

@Trouble just where do you and all the other people find thus wonderful music
Avatar 10:32am Kevin_Ringwood_ UK:

Henry - I hadn't thought of that. It's an embarrassment of riches
  10:32am John from Florham Park:

@Webhamster has anyone tried to listen to all the archives
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Z-pulpa:

The greatest part of having a solitary desk job for the last year is listening to wfmu 40+ hours a week. Thursdays are a favorite, I listen pretty much 9am-9pm!
Avatar 10:34am Lixiviated Life:

Everything's better with bird songs in the background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Barney Grubbs:

the last time I was at Poo-Bah Records in Pasadena (2013?) they were playing that Anika ep in the store and I was one of like 5 people who bought it in the 45 minutes I was there

Ah, I recall making the trek to Glover quite a few times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Z-pulpa:

@John from Florham Park, haha I do! but at that point I usually tune out and let the days programming sink in a bit, after Blind Tourist, Hearty White, and the gospel hour my brain is tingly and happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am melinda:

I know people whose live music experiences are all big concerts/big names, which is fine, but I don't get it. Maybe they enjoy huge crowds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am melinda:

Glover is interesting.
Avatar 10:43am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

I'm with you @melinda. You can pay $10 to see amazing groups in small bars with hardly anyone there. Why go with the crowds and the $$$$?
  10:48am John from Florham Park:

@Z-you do have a point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

Just received a text message from my sister: "Only in MN is the statewide tornado drill cancelled due to flooding and a blizzard." Minnesota has two seasons: Winter and Road Construction! Also, their state bird is the mosquito.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am tim from champaign:

Howdy Trouble and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Phillippe Bastille:

@Z I have a hard time with those two shows. I like the idea of the Blind Tourist, but she often has several layers of sound going at the same time and I can't separate them out enough to enjoy either. Hearty White is just not my cuppa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Trouble:

@barney: that speaks volumes about why record stores are so necessary.
@ken from hype park: whoa
  11:00am John from Florham Park:

@tim howdy back
Avatar 11:01am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

Hearty is a preacher of faith for those who have no faith. A spiritualist that isn't interested in god. He occupies a position that few have the fortitude to maintain. I'm a follower.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am tim from champaign:

@melinda and dc pat - I'm with you. I'm close to 30 years in with going to shows. As more time goes by, I mainly seek out shows that are affordable and in intimate spaces. Non traditional venues are the best - record shops, art galleries, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am tim from champaign:

Hey John!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Z-pulpa:

@ Phillippe Bastille, one of the beautiful things about wfmu is sharing some tastes with some and not with others and feeling our tastes change! For me the overlapping multi track collage in the blind tourist is really relaxing, but also has something to do with listening to it right after work when I want to just pause and rest my mind, as for Hearty White, haha I think he strikes a spiritual chord in my searching heart from time to time, but for months I couldnt listen to him and then one evening when I was feeling down he really got to me.
Avatar 11:03am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

I have a friend that only goes to see the same 20 or so groups who seem to get more and more popular. So the venues get bigger and more pricey. I keep going smaller and smaller.. Flesh Eaters was the biggest show I've seen in years..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Z-pulpa:

but here we are, in the morning in The Modern World, I am loving the show this morning Trouble! Thank You.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Webhamster Henry:

WFMU has a way of making music I wouldn't listen to listenable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Devin B.:

Hell yeah new Sneaks!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Z-pulpa:

I saw SNEAKS last spring at a small show in Baltimore and was blown away by her stage presence, it was a great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am melinda:

One of the most interesting shows I attended was Michael Hurley at a tiny record/VHS store. There was space for just a handful of people and I sat on a milk crate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Devin B.:

Recently saw Sunwatchers and Mega Bog at a roller rink. Bands played in the center with people skating around. That was fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am tim from champaign:

Theme de yoyo!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Phillippe Bastille:

Ken does a really good job keeping things balanced and finding the right places for shows. Dance with me Stanley cut to one hour and moved to Friday Happy Hour time was a brilliant move, IMHO. Can't believe it works, but its a great way to start the weekend.
  11:09am John from Florham Park:

@Z as I have gotten older I have found myself more and more hearing more and more non commercial radio like WFMU and a couple of others, gearing stairway to heaven fir the 4th time in a week does not do it for me anymore, love radio paradise too because they play a lot of wonderful stuff that I don’t hear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am tim from champaign:

that's what I'm talking bout, melinda and Devin! @Devin, was that show recently in Seattle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Devin B.:

  11:11am John from Florham Park:

@Tim this station has it in spades
Avatar 11:12am Roberto:

This might be the greatest diss song of all time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am tim from champaign:

There's a couple artists I really want to see who I haven't yet like Neil Young and Nick Cave. At this point, they keep playing bigger places at prices that are way out of my range.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am tim from champaign:

@Devin - I really want to check that space out. I'm outside Tacoma.
Avatar 11:14am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

Well Nick Cave is probably worth it and I'd pay some good dough to see Tom Waits. I saw Cave about 20 years ago when it was already expensive and totally worth it. There are exceptions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Devin B.:

@Tim: It'd be worth the drive for the right line up. Do they still do shows at the Java Jive?
Avatar 11:15am βrian:

@TFC: That seems to be the case for John Prine, too. I saw him in small venues, or for free, at a festival.
Avatar 11:15am Roberto:

@Devin - I'll have to look into it. I'm relatively new to the area. Tacoma is pretty rad. There's a newish record and vintage shop called Jankuland in Tacoma that does DIY shows that are cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Planet Tyler:

Love this Bobby Oraza. First heard it on WFMU. Nice little record label too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Devin B.:

Just joining, Spring Break, woohoo, but Arto Lindsay, one of my first introductions to the Brazilian sound with the Ambitious Lovers in NYC 86. and speaking of small shows FMU introduced me to Laeticia Sadier and we saw her out here in a li'l club; I think we paid $15. Great show.

this song is so underappreciated. it was awesome when it appeared on "Futurama".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am sphere:

  11:29am Adrian in London:

Late but being greeted by Pizzicato 5 is lovely. Hi Trouble, I hope you’re well.
Avatar 11:30am Roberto:

Yes! The song playing to possibly the most teak-jerking sequence in the entire Futurama canon.

Mornin'! Been listening, but busy working. Going full circle to the conversation about special places to see artists, one of my favorites was the time I attended a "Surrealist Game Night" at a cafe in Somerville, MA, hosted by Roger Miller of Mission of Burma. Going in, I assumed he was just the celebrity host the venue got, but it turned out this was just something he's really into. He mostly just gave us the rules, then went from table to table to see how everyone was doing. It was really charming.

@Priscella screw that rude guy next to you

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Z-pulpa:

so strange, I am not a heavy drinker at all but all of a sudden I have a strong desire to sip a glass of white wine during the shift from Modern World To Ravioli.
  11:51am Adrian in London:

If you’re in London, a really special place to see artists is in library of the French Institute, the Fe ch government’s cultural centre. Le Superhomard are playing there next week.
