Avatar 7:06pm LambdaCalculus:

Cool track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm chresti:

Where is that store in the image?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Passiflora! Lambda-C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm chresti:

That looks like a place where you have to ask for what you want to buy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Gary:

That store was on Court Street in Carroll Gardens, a phone card store, but when you went into the back ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Gary:

... I don't know the name of it, but the woman who worked behind the cassette/CD counter was Algerian
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That Vietnamese track. That.
Avatar 7:10pm TDK60:

chresti: I might hafta demand instead of ask...
Avatar 7:11pm LambdaCalculus:

Court Street in Carroll Gardens? I know that area! Is it going more towards Smith/9th or more towards downtown?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm chresti:

So happy I'm not driving out of downtown this time,( like the last couple of weeks or so)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

More towards downtown, but the store is long gone ... most of the places I used to visit are either gone or no longer sell media ... just a few left these days
Avatar 7:12pm LambdaCalculus:

Awww, crap. :(
Avatar 7:13pm TDK60:

..it's a darn shame..
Avatar 7:13pm LambdaCalculus:

That looks like the kind of store I would get lost in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

It was pretty small -- a very long, thin store. What you see there in the photo is most of the stock, although there was another case and wall at an L to my left
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Two doors down from that store was Rashid Music! Which is also long gone
Avatar 7:15pm LambdaCalculus:

Awww man, I remember Rashid!
Avatar 7:15pm TDK60:

I used to get Bollywood tapes at an Indian-run international food mart. $1 or 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm chresti:

TDK, I always get too bashful to ask for anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

Oh, awesome, L-C! And, TDK, there are still a couple of places you can get Bollywood CDs
Avatar 7:16pm LambdaCalculus:

I remember one tape shop on 9th Avenue that operated right out of a Pakistani restaurant. They also had some movies, too!
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

I've walked the length of Court St (and most streets in Brooklyn and Manhattan and west Queens)

just realized I'm weird....
Avatar 7:17pm LambdaCalculus:

Weird is beautiful. Normal is overrated. :)
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

South and SE Bronx as well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

NGH!
Avatar 7:19pm LambdaCalculus:

I remember buying lots of Cantopop and Taiwanese music in Chinatown back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Lots of cool Russian music in Brighton, Polish music in Greenpoint, plenty of awesome African and Carribean along Nostrand...
Avatar 7:19pm LambdaCalculus:

Discovered Cambodian psych rock and loaded up on that thanks to NYPL visits!
Avatar 7:20pm northguineahills:

There's a Pakistani restaurant on 9th Ave and 38th w/ Bollywood DVDs and sndtrks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

L-C, we are apparently the same person!
Avatar 7:20pm LambdaCalculus:

Kashmir 9? The restaurant is still there; the DVD shop is gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

BTW, there is a place in the Bronx that still sells Cambodian cassettes and CDs
Avatar 7:20pm LambdaCalculus:

Gary, we certainly think alike! ;)
Avatar 7:21pm LambdaCalculus:

Where!? :O
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

Here: www.yelp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm chresti:

I see more indoor "swapmeet/mall style places than moms and pops, these days, like in Chinatown
Avatar 7:24pm northguineahills:

Si, LamdaCalculus. Haven't been there since I left the city.
Avatar 7:24pm LambdaCalculus:

Gary, thanks! I'm going to make a trip up! Get some food while I'm there, too! :)
Avatar 7:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Exactly what were you looking at in the picture, Gary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Gary:

Franco! I don't remember ... but judging by the look on my face, either something music related, or beer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Gary:

L-C, also stop in to the Indian store to the right of Battambang Market II; last time I was there, I found some rare EMI Bollywood CDs, although they didn't have much
Avatar 7:32pm LambdaCalculus:

I shall do so!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm chresti:

The Indo-Pakistani stores around here have DVDs, mostly.
Avatar 7:35pm LambdaCalculus:

chresti, what part are you in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm chresti:

Have to search the outer reaches, once shops get pushed out of the neighborhood.
Avatar 7:37pm LambdaCalculus:

It's sad to see longtime residents and shops get shoved out of neighborhoods for generic, soulless junk. :(

Fort Greene once had a great Cambodian restaurant (Greene & Fulton) that got turned in a BBQ place. Nothing against BBQ, but Billyburg has the best around. I missed that (haven't found Cambodian cuisine since).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm chresti:

Lambda Calculus- California, SGV, Northeastern Los Angeles, mostly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Gary:

There's a Cambodian place in midtown east, now, run by a couple that had another Cambodian restaurant years ago -- maybe even that one in Fort Greene, NGH
Avatar 7:43pm LambdaCalculus:

northguineahills, that's a shame. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

Haha what's Rootle?
Avatar 7:43pm LambdaCalculus:

Midtown east? Hmmmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

They make terrific amok
Avatar 7:46pm LambdaCalculus:

I'll have to go! I haven't had Cambodian food and I've been dying to try it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm chresti:

I think Orange County has a large Cambodian population. May as well be on the moon in terms of ever going there (for me, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Gary:

Chresti, yes, and Long Beach, too, I think -- some Long Beach addresses on my Khmer CDs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Angkor Cambodian Bistro in midtown: www.yelp.com...
Avatar 7:50pm still b/p:

Rootle is a real word that has the same meaning as "root' but is more fun to say, with further suggestion of poking or looking around. I have a pretty severe rootling problem...not in record stores, but in every gear-bag, satchel, pack, saddlebag and snack bag I've packed.
Avatar 7:50pm northguineahills:

*I have no idea what's going on but I fully approve* WFMU (and my brain) in a nutshell... this is beautiful!
Avatar 7:50pm LambdaCalculus:

Dengue Fever is from Long Beach... love their music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This is kewl as hell.
Avatar 7:51pm LambdaCalculus:

I know, right?? :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

L-C, you can find Chhom Nimol's first CD, before Dengue Fever, at that Cambodian market in the Bronx
Avatar 7:52pm geezerette:

This is a wonderful performance. No idea what she's talking about but sounds like a great story!
Avatar 7:52pm northguineahills:

(another reason my wife has made it verboten for me to enter record stores, is I look at every record. She'll be fine for the first hour, make her purchases, but by hour 4+, she wants to kill me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm chresti:

Avatar 7:57pm LambdaCalculus:

Bad kitty! :P
Avatar 7:57pm Franco Twinkie:

There was a Cambodian restaurant right down the street when we first moved to this neighborhood. We only went twice before it closed. First time was great, second time so-so. But we do have a Cambodian donut shop across the street with the very exotic name, Uncle Joes. I had a jelly filled on Saturday, it did not disappoint.

Avatar 8:01pm LambdaCalculus:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm chresti:

I never noticed media for sale at the donut shop.
Avatar 8:01pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Gary:
