Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:23pm Funky16Corners:

Started earlier than that in the underground discos (especially the gay ones). The above ground sort of pop disco thing started a little later. I've done disco on the show before. Once did a five hour marathon!

If anyone is interested in an outstanding book on the breadth of disco music and culture this is it: www.amazon.com...
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Cruising With Ruben And The Jets is one of the greatest records about love ever made. The Mothers cover every possible angle on the subject on that album. Ray Collins was a fantastic singer.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:26pm still b/p:

Just looking the other day at info on Rock the Boat by Hues Corp. One version released '73 got club play, then the reedit was one of the first widely popular disco hits in '74.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:26pm Erica:

Yeah my parents were around at that time, not me, so I only know about the popular disco stuff from oldies stations and the internet.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:28pm Jeff Ash:

This disco cover of Gordon Lightfoot is better than I might have imagined.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:28pm Funky16Corners:

There's a ton of great music from the disco era that never gets played on the radio. It's by and large just black dance music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:29pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yeah, a hit in the clubs and on the disco charts but nowhere else. It's on the soundtrack to the movie '54'
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:29pm Erica:

It was black dance music until Saturday Night Fever came out.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:30pm Erica:

Well until the Bee Gees made disco records anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

There was still plenty of black music on that soundtrack, Tavares, Kool and the Gang, Trammps
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:31pm Erica:

Then came KC & the Sunshine Band (I could go on).
  Wed. 2/13/19 10:32pm melinda:

@Jeff I agree
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

They even had some good records. 'Get Down Tonight' (especially the long, Tom Moulton mix) is a big fave of mine. They came out of the southern Florida, TK records scene.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:33pm still b/p:

Can still sometimes hear the forehead slapper of a mischaracterization that Saturday Night Fever started the craze. It gave it a surge, pushed it further into more corners of America, and made it a genericized theme for TV show plots and yadda yadda....but "started"....get adda heah.

Also, gay clubs and white urban trend riders made early disco much more than only black dance music, I'm pretty sure.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:34pm Erica:

I do know that the SNF soundtrack cover has been spoofed so many times (did I mention that before?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:35pm chresti:

Glam begat Disco, I thought
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - The book I mentioned above is a great look at the early years of the sound. 'Last Night a DJ Saved My ife' also has some good stuff in it.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:35pm Erica:

Yeah SNF didn't start the disco craze, it popularized it a few years after its existence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - Maybe some of the sartorial style, but not the music, in anay measurable way
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

  Wed. 2/13/19 10:38pm melinda:

Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

When I told my sister that I had never seen Saturday Night Fever, she reacted as if said I had never eaten a potato chip.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:39pm still b/p:

As 15 to 17 year olds, my friends and I were sneering at the fad and the music '74-'76, and by '76 the fashion and hair styles sure had made it to suburban Massachusetts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

The music that became disco was happening concurrently with glam but almost completely unrelated stylistically. It was happening in gay clubs and loft parties years before it ever broke through into the wider consciousness

I was one of the few of my friends who liked this stuff ...
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:44pm still b/p:

In college, the guys I roomed with called the discos "bimbo joints" (even though some of went there for the social mixing scene). This wasn't a direct insult to women, but a jeering term -- more of a verb -- for the whole scene and the behavior and dancing. One guy was given a shirt that said in pretty bold type, "I will bimbo no more forever."
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

My favorite disco 45 will forever and always be Funky Town by Lipps Inc. Okay, I Feel Love is pretty dang good too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:46pm doctorjazz:

It was "Disco Sucks" to the folks who broke in with hippy music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:46pm chresti:

Yeah-Funky Town is a favorite
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:47pm Erica:

It was the rock n roll fans who hated disco.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:47pm still b/p:

Heard Funky Town yesterday and it made me smile.
Wed. 2/13/19 10:48pm Matt from New Orleans:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I have on occasion
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Funky Town makes me think of washing the driveway with a hose on a hot summer day, and it's blaring out an apartment window with dirty curtains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:51pm doctorjazz:

There was great stuff before electronics computers, drum machines came in, but that really defined the sound once they got introduced.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:52pm coelacanth∅:

I wonder if Larry knows about the Just Can't Get Enough series put out by Rhino Records. It has new wave from the 70s and 80s, many of the hits and a lot of obscure stuff too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:53pm chresti:

I've never seen Saturday Night Fever, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:54pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:54pm Erica:

Been meaning to listen to that series once I can purchase it though.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:54pm coelacanth∅:

...but i've missed most of the show, trying to figure out a computer problem; and now i'm connected but may not make it to the end!
then again i might.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:55pm Franco Twinkie:

This is a great way to reconsider music. Forty years after the fact, in my bathrobe on a rainy night.
  Wed. 2/13/19 10:55pm cupcakejenny:

Nothing wrong with SNF :)
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

chresti i think in my older sister's case -and mine, to a small degree, the t rex album "light of love" (reissued as ...zip gun?) helped to ease people from glam toward disco.
i still love that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:57pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

This makes me think of guys with Nu-Wave shirts and haircuts looking all serious bent over a 64 track mixing desk.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:00pm coelacanth∅:

the motors. weird. i bought their first album in 1978 - considered a new wave album. i never knew they did this kind of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:01pm doctorjazz:

First digital track played-got pretty far on vinyl!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

The Motors started out in the Pub Rock scene. Bram Tchaikovsky was in the band for a while.
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:02pm cupcakejenny:

You should have played the 16 candles song
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:02pm still b/p:

If we'll allow more SNF indulgence:
There's much of the 70s disco that gives me a smile and kick now. I like SNF as something to idly ponder and examine. When I first saw it, months after its biggest hype, it was better than I expected. Looking at repeatedly over the years it's good for: scenes of an older New York; noting how awful and lame some of the dancing actually is; noting how how clunky and low the production level is, to both better and worse effect.
And favorite scenes and lines. Discussing Romeo and Juliet suicides at the coffee shop, Tony thinks Romeo "could have waited." Stephanie: "It's the way they took poison in those days."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:02pm Funky16Corners:

@Jenny - by these guys or the Thompson Twins?
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:03pm cupcakejenny:

You know the one. At the end with the car
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:05pm coelacanth∅:

Tchaikovsky was definitely with them when they did "dancing the night away", which is why i bought a motors album. kind of a new wave-prog meld... but i think their biggest hit was "airport",no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:05pm chresti:

telemann seems very trite to me; but then i love herman's hermits!

Never mind, wrong artist. Telemann was a German baroque composer. I just looked it up. Teleman (without the last n) is an Indie band.

How did it get to be 11:30?
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:30pm Dean:

Tchaikovsky demands serious attention. Telemann doesn't, and that's why I love his music. (I love Tchaikovsky, too, but for different reasons.)

The time, she flies when fun is being had (at least by some)
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:32pm Dean:

"Sowing the Seeds of Love" is a pop masterpiece.

I suppose I'm also a fan of New Order. The music is ordinary, but the production and sound are pretty terrific.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

eh, Tchaikovski's pretty predictable.
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Sounding divine as usual, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:33pm Funky16Corners:

I love Tchaikovsky. Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, 1812
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:33pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doug!
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:33pm Dean:

Predictable? Do you know the piano trio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:34pm Funky16Corners:

TCHAIKOVSKY FIGHT!!!!
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:34pm Erica:

Speaking of classical music, I'd say I like Beethoven, but then again, I'd be a blond boy who wears a black and purple striped shirt, playing a red toy piano. Haha!
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:34pm coelacanth∅:

okay yes swan lake...there are some moments.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

1812 is a snoozefest!
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:37pm Dean:

Some recordings of the 1812 are snoozefests. The work itself, not so much.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:37pm still b/p:

In the program notes at the debut performance of Romeo and Juliet , Tchaikovsky said this about what he tried to capture: "It's the way they took poison in those days."
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

Dean, i'll give you that. and conversations like this always make me go listen again.
... i just know that Tchaikovski was the first classical composer i got into, as a child, and when i started discovering other composers he seemed very elementary...which makes sense to me.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:40pm Erica:

Is that your favorite quoute b/p?
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:40pm Erica:

quote I mean.

Tchaikovsky wore his heart on his sleeve, As un-inscrutable (scrutable?) as any of the big composers

From the movie, I think so. For now.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - He recorded mainly as Little Buster. One of my favorite lesser known soul singers.
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:43pm Dean:

I'd say that's a bit of stereotyping, F16C. I mean, Elgar? Beethoven? Puccini? Penderecki? They all were emotionally demonstrative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:44pm doctorjazz:

Cool, that's a familiar name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:46pm Funky16Corners:

There I go again, stereotyping Russian composers. Don't get me started or I'll start pigeonholing the baroque era's best.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:46pm coelacanth∅:

i think Chopin is my favorite romantic period composer. maybe Schumann - but i don't know all that much of either of their works.
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:47pm Dean:

Chopin? S-w-o-o-n!
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:48pm coelacanth∅:

go for it Larry! i don't know much about baroque composers.
Bach, Vivaldi & Telemann... that might be it.

Are nausea and despair legitimate reactions to the heartfelt expression of artistic vision?
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

(of course i say that when it might be clear i also don't know much about romantic period composers)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I don't either. I was kidding.

Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:51pm coelacanth∅:

yes Franco but it also occurs when you consume pre-historic fruit cocktail.
  Wed. 2/13/19 11:52pm Dean:

You could do worse than start with Bach. For instance, listen to a half a dozen or more recordings of Goldberg Variations. That comparison alone can be incredibly instructive and inspirational.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:52pm Erica:

Now it's Power Pop. Can't wait to hear the Raspberries next haha. The power of Freeform radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - Otis Clay's is my favorite. Surpasses the original (IMHO).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/13/19 11:53pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - It's just songs. Good songs.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:53pm still b/p:

We had a Chopin bio-album when I was a kid -- dramatizations of life moments and conversations, and presumably music. I only vaguely remember a confrontation scene on the record. I think a godmother gave it to my brother. Interesting choice for a grade school kid. It didn't get the play that The Chipmunks and Paul Bunyan and Disney Pinocchio and Mary Poppins got.
Avatar Wed. 2/13/19 11:53pm coelacanth∅:

i know he's top 40 and all but i love Bach

up until age 3-4 the records we had (maybe 3 records?) included "conduct your own orchestra" which was a sampling, covering a lot of ground as i remember. got an early start.
