Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

hELLO! LISTENING! Sounds GOOD
Avatar 2:10pm coelacanth∅:

so is this a different type of stream or what? as soon as this show started my player freaked out and died on the laptop i usually listen with. so i try it on this one, which always works, and "unsupported document type".
Avatar 2:10pm Dave Sewelson:

Yikes....thank you all. Welcome individually and together to this marvelous adventure

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Dropof Goldensun:

Total silence here as well and I've tried a few things. I never have a problem with any other show. I'll keep trying every week.

Works fine for me (windows10, winamp 5.666, same with pop-op with firefox 64.0.2)
Avatar 2:17pm coelacanth∅:

winamp. yes, 4-5 x. it doesn't work on my macbook either, which is realplayer and extremely dependable.
on the windows/winamp i listened to Mayuko's entire show.
  2:17pm WTF:

the show is streaming fine, youre the only ones who cant hear it; must be a problem with your devices. Please update your software.
Avatar 2:17pm Dave Sewelson:

Hmmmm I can hear myself thinking
Avatar 2:17pm Thatchmo:

You get what you pay for in this world ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Dropof Goldensun:

Don't you think it's kind of odd that I can stream every other show on here?
Avatar 2:18pm Dave Sewelson:

ODD is a fine word for it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I get a "streaming error" message on my Android phone using the app.
Avatar 2:19pm Thatchmo:

I gotta buckle my seat belt for this show, Sewely.
Avatar 2:21pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, it's too great a coincidence. the stream for this show is different somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Dropof Goldensun:

I just tried on my iPhone and it comes in fine but I'm at work and I have to listen on my computer. Don't have time to update or mess with anything. Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Doug Schulkind:

@Dropof Goldensun
Yes, it is VERY weird. This show is connecting to the stream by the same method as every other show. Exactly the same. I will alert the authorities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Dropof Goldensun:

I totally agree coelacanth.
  2:23pm Robert Tables:

Hello. I noticed that Dave's show streams using the AAC codec, whereas Mayuko's show streamed using the MP3 codec. Perhaps some people's software can't handle AAC, or can't gracefully switch codecs on the fly.
Avatar 2:24pm coelacanth∅:

i have 2 laptops and both 128mp3 & pop up work fine always, now suddenly neither works on either device.
Rex's show comes in loud and clear on both laptops, with all 3 (incl.aac) modes.
Avatar 2:24pm Sem:

Hello, Dave, and all. Diggin' this, along for the whole ride.
Avatar 2:25pm coelacanth∅:

damn. William Parker fan since the 90s too.
oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm fred:

@Robert Tables: that looks like insightful insight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Doug Schulkind:

@Robert Tables
You may have just solved the problem. Or, maybe not. I will confer with Dave after the show about adjusting that.
Avatar 2:27pm coelacanth∅:

i thought of that right away, but the main wfmu stream works fine with aac. i'm listening to it now.
  2:27pm îke:

Sounds good on my iPhone app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm fred:

Is the pop-up working?
Avatar 2:27pm NSA Subcommittee on Streaming Anomalies:

Dear Mr. Schulkind, we have received your notice and will process accordingly. Or not.
  2:27pm David J:

Sounds great in iPhone WFMU app. Long live extraterrestrial radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Any error that is keeping folks from listening is my fault as I instructed Dave how to configure his streaming software. I will begin administering the self flagellations after the show as I don't want to miss a blessed second.
Avatar 2:30pm Sem:

coel: how weird. Using VLC on Gnome browser, running Linux Mint 18.3. No problems.

Doug: go easy on yourself, use the beginner flail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm fred:

@Doug: to paraphrase Nancy Pelosi: you can have your self-flagellation once the stream is open
Avatar 2:31pm coelacanth∅:

maybe if the show's going out as aac but there's no "aac" link on the webpage that the player tries to play something (an mp3) that is something else (aac)
  2:31pm Robert Tables:

Happy to help! (My own experience was having to restart my player [mpv on ubuntu xenial]).
Avatar 2:33pm coelacanth∅:

Sem i just uninstalled vlc less than a week ago because it sucks; but it probably would play this because it's in the firefox browser.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I have invited Nancy Pelosi to do a show on the Drummer Stream. Still waiting to hear back.
  2:35pm WTF:

ok guys, can you let those who are listening enjoy the show. We get it, u cant hear it. Let's not make the chat a tech-helpdesk.
Avatar 2:35pm coelacanth∅:

(i didn't want to uninstall it either, but winamp wouldn't play as long as vlc was looming)
Avatar 2:35pm coelacanth∅:

WTF, Fuck off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm fred:

What coel said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm fred:

@Doug: wasn't "Nancy Pelosi in the House" one of your high school band names?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Doug Schulkind:

You know me well, fred.
Avatar 2:43pm coelacanth∅:

Doug - just reinstalled vlc and am listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Sweet, coel. Your persistence is a fine and lovely thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm fred:

@coel: I'm glad that worked
Avatar 2:46pm coelacanth∅:

Thank you fred.
Avatar 2:48pm Sem:

Glad to you're hearing this, coel.
Avatar 2:51pm coelacanth∅:

me too! Thanks Sem. i hope Dropof is hearing it too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Doug Schulkind:

"Regulating your body to beauty and truth." Looks like Give the Drummer Radio has a new tag line.
Avatar 2:56pm david w:

William! Big hug!
Avatar 2:57pm Jeff Moore:

I didn't notice anything was weird (except that my stream player stopped dead at the transition and I had to hit play again, which sometime happens in the ordinary course of events), but yes – I can confirm that Dave is now streaming in AAC instead of MP3.

Which I wish we could just switch to everywhere, because it nearly always sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate (sounding great, Dave!), but unfortunately there are some existing software bits which expect nasty old MP3.
Avatar 2:57pm coelacanth∅:

'you mean no cassette player?!
Avatar 3:00pm coelacanth∅:

Jeff i like having the option,as aac doesn't work at all on snow leopard.
...but, is it possible to put an aac link next to the mp3 link on the playlist page? i'm thinking with that link my winamp would've played it. (after said pause)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Doug Schulkind:

For Those Who Are, Still: williamparker.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 3:03pm Dave Sewelson:

William says HI DAVE
Avatar 3:04pm coelacanth∅:

oh man i want that,Doug. not happening for a while i imagine.
Avatar 3:06pm Jeff Moore:

@coelacanth∅: it wouldn't be quite that simple, because many DJs who do live shows are using software which isn't capable of producing more than one stream at a time. It would be easy to make the Drummer-stream jukebox sprout an additional stream in AAC, but that would be pointless and confusing if the AAC stream only continually played the Drummer jukebox and didn't provide all the live shows!

If only one stream codec is in use, so far we've been sticking with MP3 because it's a "least common denominator" choice which basically everybody seems to be able to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm fred:

I like that approach. I don't want WFMU to go where only those who can afford the latest crap get in. MP3 is old crap, but it's accessible
Avatar 3:13pm coelacanth∅:

Jeff, i just mean an additional link, as there is on the main wfmu playlist pages -just for those shows (which at last count was at exactly 1) that send it out in aac. (or maybe instead of the mp3 link, since it's not mp3) i just think it's the link that screwed up winamp. of course i could be incorrect about that.
Avatar 3:15pm Jeff Moore:

Thanks for the Bandcamp link, Doug!

Bandcamp is the first place I look for music these days, because

(a) I assume that the artists get a better cut from Bandcamp sales than sales which have had to squeeze through more layers of middlemen to get to other retail channels – but we have actual working artists here, it'd be great to hear if my assumption is correct; and

(b) You can get nice lossless FLAC downloads, because who would want to listen to lossy compression like MP3 or even AAC when playing your own copies of music at home?
Avatar 3:16pm coelacanth∅:

fred i agree. i can't even bank online anymore because of "updates". in a considerate and earth-conscious world everything would be able to work with snow leopard and windows xp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm fred:

I say that while hating MP3. And don't get me started about Linus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm fred:

@Jef Moore: Everyone I know says bandcamp gives them a better cut. They're mostly struggling artists though, with some having WFMU fame. If you aim higher, maybe bandcamp isn't for you
Avatar 3:24pm Jeff Moore:

@coel: just "an additional link" isn't as simple as you assume, because live Drummer DJs who are streaming direct from their home studios (as is the case with this show right now, and Mayuko's show earlier, and lots of others) have to initiate all streams from their home setups, and most aren't currently using software which is capable of doing that for more than one stream simultaneously.

We could try to transcode in the cloud, but that would be complicated and quite possibly not meet the quality goals either.

I was able to add an additional high-quality AAC stream (and it was my initiative, because of how much better it can sound) for all the shows streaming on the main WFMU channel, because all of those streams originate at the station from devices I maintain, so the setup is something I could handle myself.

We don't have that luxury with remote alt-stream shows. It's a miracle these bumblebees can fly, I don't want to weigh them down with cargo pouches.
Avatar 3:26pm Dave Sewelson:

Thanks for the diagnostics.......will squish the sound better next time
Avatar 3:28pm Jeff Moore:

@Dave: The way you're doing it sounds great! I just wish it were compatible with everybody's stuff.

And welcome to WFMU playlists, where sometimes (often) the discussion is about something other than the music.

But we're all listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh [non-specific gender reference] are we listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm doctorjazz:

Hi all, made it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm fred:

Maybe the conversation isn't about the music today, but it's about making sure everyone who wants to can hear the music. I understand it can get in the way of who can already hear it, but sharing is worth it? OK, I'll shut up
Avatar 3:33pm coelacanth∅:

Jeff i was thinking more in terms of an "aac" link INSTEAD of the "mp3" link, for this show, since this is aac. (because i think my winamp gets the directive to open an mp3 when it's an aac, it didn't know what to do with it)
but no i wasn't assuming it was easy. just hoping.
Avatar 3:34pm coelacanth∅:

Doug, "babe" would work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Doug Schulkind:

OK, Babe!
Avatar 3:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(coel: If the link makes its way to Winamp, it'll work regardless of what the link may have claimed it is. The issue, deduced from your earlier email reports, is likely that Winamp isn't even being handed the link in the first place. There is likely something else in your web browser that is deciding to handle the link (and then failing) instead of passing it over to Winamp. Or, are you actually seeing an error message inside Winamp?)
Avatar 3:44pm geezerette:

This is absolutely wonderful. :)
Hello, people of WoofMoo!
Avatar 3:45pm coelacanth∅:

hi Kenzo -i can't check now because i reinstalled vlc and it took over, and i don't remember. i only considered that possibility because winamp worked fine for Mayuko's show; and it works fine for the main fmu stream, in aac.
  3:45pm Irene:

Welcome Dave! It’s streaming fine on my iPhone but not the Android (yeah, I have two phones. Long story) It’s all a work in progress.Loved that symphonic piece and loving this conversation with William.

I saw William Parker w/ Mathew Shipp in Jacksonville, FL (Sam Rivers played the same show)) when I was 19 in 1995. It expanded my musical horizons and got me out of my indie rock ghetto, to, where, well, you what my tastes are today. Thankfully, saw him plenty times when I lived in NYC.
