Recent tech news:

Facebook Is Still Abusing Your Privacy (The New Republic, July 11): "Despite promises from Mark Zuckerberg, the company's embrace of facial recognition technology suggests that it has no intentions of changing."

Christopher Wylie, Cambridge Analytica whistleblower: "Just to sum up. 1) Facebook broke the law. 2) Cambridge Analytica broke the law. 3) Vote Leave broke the law. 4) LeaveEU broke the law. 5) Brexit and Trump were both won through breaking the law. 6) Facebook let it all happen and covered it up."

Here's what Sergey Brin is wearing lately.

What Elon Musk Should Learn From the Thailand Cave Rescue (Zeynep Tufekci in the NYT, July 14), a response to solutionism: "The Silicon Valley model for doing things is a mix of can-do optimism, a faith that expertise in one domain can be transferred seamlessly to another and a preference for rapid, flashy, high-profile action. But what got the kids and their coach out of the cave was a different model: a slower, more methodical, more narrowly specialized approach to problems, one that has turned many risky enterprises into safe endeavors — commercial airline travel, for example, or rock climbing, both of which have extensive protocols and safety procedures that have taken years to develop."

Meantime, here's how to use tech in self-defense...

I was happy to see Elon Musk get a big, de-deifying, un-omniscient-ing smack in the face this week.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:06pm mrdonutsu:

So when are we going to start discussing what happens when our current regime decides to nationalize the key players in our Tech industry (Goog, FB, etc.)?

I'm envisioning it being rolled out both to "protect" us from the excesses of big tech that have been discussed here, and also framed as a means to protect "National Security".
  Mon. 7/16/18 6:06pm melinda:

What was that James?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, Mark and the techtonique! So great there's a TV commercial airing these days about the joy and convenience about accessing one's phone via facial recognition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:08pm Michael 98145:

where's Micah ?!?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:08pm Folsom:

@melinda they were saying that the elon sub was too big and wouldn't work in the caves and elon doubled down on how important the sub was
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:09pm listener james from westwood:

I mean, was he imagining some sort of Fantastic Voyage shrinky-dink here?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:09pm dale:

i hope that the coach at least get's a demotion to assistant coach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:09pm Folsom:

@melinda then elon called the guy saying the sub was worthless a pedo since he was in thailand he was obviously looking for underage sex

I still sport a Sony cassette walkman.... use it while gardening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:10pm listener james from westwood:

Biggest and fastest way Musk could've helped: fund the damn rescue. Would've been a rounding error. Not everything has to be some branding exercise.
  Mon. 7/16/18 6:10pm melinda:

What a colossal asshole!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:11pm dale:

musk hasn't created any new value or product - all he has done is fill his pockets with investor and government grant money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:11pm listener james from westwood:

White-savior horse-puckey on Musk's part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:12pm ultradamno:

Maybe launch his sub into space to rescue his Tesla roadster?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:13pm chris:

fail fast and often is really not a problem solving model for search and rescue
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:13pm Bas NL:

Let me guess, the cave now has full WiFi connection for sharing future strandings?

Data vampires! hey live forever on the blood of your data!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:32pm Buffalo's Tom:

@dale, too true. I grew up in a conservative area, so to see how many of my high school acquaintances have calcified into cranky caricatures has been useful, albeit depressing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:33pm ultradamno:

Is it ironic Facebook's apology ad for (among other things) "data misuse" is wall to wall footage apparently appropriated from Facebook users?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:35pm ultradamno:

...but, then again, dancing in groups while singing into rolled-up newspapers is the Facebook spirit encapsulated (I guess)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:38pm βrian:

If I delete my account, I'll have to first create one. I'm just not up to it.

I've railed against FaceBoot since its inception
  Mon. 7/16/18 6:41pm the cl@m digger:

Is there any alternative to gmail besides a paid service?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:42pm Buffalo's Tom:

So many of my friends use FB as the sole place they announce their events, parties, and whatnot. I find myself suspending my account and then logging in once a week or so to hurriedly see what's happening.

my idea is to post a delete date in the future, then post articles about why to delete Facebook while collecting contacts and pictures prior to actually deleting. but I am lazy and haven't done it yet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:45pm TDK60:

Mark, I haven't been able to be here much recently. Summer schedule much busier than winter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:46pm mrdonutsu:

When FB is nationalized, we will all be required to have an account. It's where we will get all our news, vote, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Other than my WFMU comments, I have no social media presence. I never saw the appeal.
Mon. 7/16/18 6:47pm David in London:

Saw Lanier talking last month here in London, and haven't used either Google or Facebook since. It's been absolute bloody Heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:48pm northguineahills:

I've only used FB once a week since its inception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:50pm JakeGould:

Facebook is great! Without it I would have had to meet a lot of people I don’t want to during school reunions. Now I can just click “Like” and get on with life.
Avatar Mon. 7/16/18 6:51pm geezerette:

Mark and all of you;thank you, thank you, thank you for the sanity!

My husband just said,"I feel vindicated!".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:51pm Webhamster Henry:

I pay for my email, and have a domain with a catch-all, so I have an unlimited number of email addresses.
I give each service their own version of "my email" or login, instead of a single address that can correlate to big data, and were any of those emails compromised, I would know exactly where the problem is.
Many of my FB friends (and myself) are not there under their usual names, which is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:52pm Webhamster Henry:

So in short, indeed it's soul sucking, but you can give it a straw-person's soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:52pm melinda:

I'm not ready to delete my social media accounts for reasons that have been discussed here already, isolation due to chronic illness. I've made friends on fb I don't want to lose contact with. @Henry great idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:53pm Fredericks:

Don't most commercial accounts require one to have a private account?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:53pm JakeGould:

For whatever it’s worth, I think I liked delete my LinkedIn. I can’t think of anything less useful in 2018 for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:53pm TDK60:

I don't have social media. I am on Gmail email though. Don't like the Google empire either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 7/16/18 6:54pm melinda:

I also want to keep up with local events.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/16/18 6:54pm Buffalo's Tom:
