Howdy! Great to hear some early ECM.

Hi JW, Great start!

Hey everyone! Glad you're here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am

Welcome back!
Avatar 9:08am

Hi DJ J.W. I love ECM rekkids, don't care who doesn't.
Avatar 9:09am

Whale done, Jonathan!
Avatar 9:12am

For you ECM fans, Ricardo Villalobos was granted access to their vaults and did an amazing remix album. Sort of like Eno hits Spiritual/Euro jazz ambience. I recommend it....

ECM anytime please. Listening in the UK. Hot enough for this kind of music!

Gotta check out that Villalobos mix, sounds incredible.
Avatar 9:15am

Oh, man, Julius Hemphill!

Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Jonathan. Wake up, Little Susie, wherever you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am

Good Morning Fellow Freeformists!
Avatar 9:26am

Are you related to G. Williger?
Avatar 9:28am

Regardless, great start to the show.

We're sixth cousins, nine times removed!

Since you all said you were all good with ECM here's a classic for you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am

Is ECM controversial? Why?

Thank you. Bliss. One of my all time favourites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am

hi jonathan, good to hear you today; thought this smoothish jazz would be JA for sure :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am

hi all

fine sounds for a short drive
James Douglas:

Avatar 9:38am

I have E. Weber's "Yellow Fields" album from '75 -wonderful. // Karlward: Not sure; some jazzbos only like jazz from 1917 to about 1960 then dislike all the stuff from free jazz to more spiritual stuff. Then they pick up again with Marsalis round '85. Some just don't like the association with '60s/'70s longhairs or what they call new agey feel. May be more to it, don't know...
Avatar 9:39am
Lixiviated Life:

beatnic bongo style-arooni.
i can dig it
the most-arooni.

Yeah, I think some purists think the ECM sound, at least post-73, is cheese-tastic, but I love it. Bring on the gated reverb, I say!!
Avatar 9:44am
Lixiviated Life:

Always a place in my heart for Return To Forever, Weather Report, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Avatar 9:46am

Cheese is in the taste-buds of the cheese taster. Many ECM albums have actually helped me stretch out mentally -free therapy! well, for the price of an LP. (I love older jazz too -Count Basie.) But I did come of age in the '60s-'70s, so..

Avatar 9:50am

chatty today: Also, longtime English folkie Robin Williamson has recently done some fine jazzy-folk albums via ECM.

Is Pat Metheny too "cheesetastic" to consider?
Avatar 9:53am

I love Fire!: Gospel of Mars , new to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am

gr8 set
Avatar 9:57am
Cheri Pi:

what they all said, and will say
Avatar 10:00am
Krys O.:

Pat Metheny's Zero Tolerance for Silence was quite amazing, IMO.
Avatar 10:01am

Pat Metheny sometimes gets my lactose intolerance in a knot, but he's done some top stuff as well, not just realizing Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint".
Avatar 10:02am

A fave fusion-y album is John Abercrombie's "Timeless" - ECM.
Avatar 10:03am

@TDK60: I also have the Ebenhard Weber "Yellow Fields" Album on vinyl, not bad. Until I was mayb 28, I only liked jazz from 1962 onwards, it took me awhile to appreciate earlier more "trad jazz".

I think like most folks I'm very selective with the Metheny. Abercrombie's "Timeless" is an incredible record, definitely like top 5 "fusion" records for me.
Avatar 10:05am

Hola NGH: Yes, that E.W. album, to me, is similar to stuff later Soft Machine was doing then.
Avatar 10:06am

Crap, gotta to get to work and watch the WC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Guido from Cologne:

Great stuff!
Loved the jazz section as i love the guitar primitivism!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am

Nice tunes
Avatar 10:07am

(will be listening to Doug Schulkind at work, who's selections are nearly identical to yours, Jonathan).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am

@NGH, it's Hinky Dinky today, no Doug. So a much bigger contrast than it would be otherwise, and personally I much prefer JW right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am

Don't hear dulcimer often enough, this is making me happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am

I'll third that feeling on the dulcimer. Great playing there on that last tune. Indeed- digging this whole set: from Bill Mackay's guitar playing into this veena solo on now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am

I can't dance to this, which is perfect, because I'm just terrible at dancing.
Avatar 10:17am

Thanks for the update, ike: UM, may make me cringe on occasion, but also delivers surprises... gotta go (I don't want to be at work until 10pm again..,)
Avatar 10:22am

NGH: Who's playing World Cup today?
Avatar 10:24am

@TDK: Brazil-Belgium and France-Uruguay.

I haven't been following the games at all - worth starting now?
Frozen Kid:

great show!

Hey, I was just about to say " great show" too. Loving this ....
Avatar 10:33am

first time listener of your show jonathan....fantastic! Do you have a regular show on FMU?

Thanks for the very kind words, everyone! No regular show, just filling in at this point. But I'll be back on the air in a few weeks, I'll give everyone the info before the end of the slot!
Avatar 10:38am

thanks, I'll be looking forward to more of this
Avatar 10:49am

Fine show Jonathan, hope you have many more fill-ins.
Avatar 10:53am

Say it Prince! Those crazy baldheads' prohibition has lasted way too long.

Yeah that's the political statement of the day. Well, besides the genre/tradition hopping nature of the whole show.
Avatar 10:55am

huh, I'm a baldy, it'd take a months to grow my hair long enough and then fashion them into dreads, and then I'd just be a poseur.
Avatar 10:57am

NGH- it refers to a mental state, name of a Bob Marley tune -off Rastaman Vibration album '76.. There are short hair & bald rastas, not that I'm rasta nor dreadlocked.
Avatar 11:06am

I know TDK60, just ripping on the irie vibes.... ;)
Avatar 11:10am

NGH: heh-hee / US alcohol prohibition went from 1920 to '33. Pot prohibition has lasted from 1937 til now! with some openings here and there. I've been waiting 50 years! End the "Drug War" = Peace in Mexico, etc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am

Really enjoying this show - thanks much Jonathan!
Avatar 11:19am
Chris from DC:

Beautiful seuge into Rafael Toral there.

Chris, if you liked that, that kind of mixing is what I do when I typically host a nighttime show. Much more drone/stasis/noise/abstract stuff all rolling together.

And thank you Mick!
Avatar 11:26am
Chris from DC:

Duly noted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
joe mulligan:

ambient drone stuff is usually what I like the most, but I'm usually asleep when DJs play that sort of ilk. good to hear it during waking hours Jonathan.
Avatar 11:28am

Rafael Toral, someone who I volunteered to stay on my couch once and got free vinyl in return! (good trade off!)
Avatar 11:29am
Chris from DC:

Huge fan of his ambient records. I still play Wavefield regularly.

I had honestly not heard these ambient records before, more familiar with his more recent experimental/improv work, but have listened to one of them once a day for the past two weeks. Incredible stuff.
Avatar 11:35am

Ben Frost is the only other musician of note I remember that I wasn't already friends w/ that stayed at my pad (also got free music).
Avatar 11:44am
Chris from DC:

I've been fortunate to host some pretty interesting performers down here over the years (Z'ev, Jaap Blonk, Ben Miller).
Avatar 11:44am

Paul Drescher, new to me! (Always dug the Icelander Gudnadottir)
DumDumGuy at the Gates of Dawn:

Avatar 11:45am

@Chris: Outside of my friends, I probably won't get many more down here in FL
Avatar 11:46am
Krys O.:

Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am
joe mulligan:

@ngh I wonder what ben frost is up to. one of the best concerts I'd seen at Tonic NYC - on norfolk st
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am

Paul Drescher track is super duper, new to me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am

This set was stunning, especially for a rainy Maine morning at the lake.
Avatar 11:52am

@joe mulligan: That was the show where a mutual friend asked if he could stay at my place (I had a large pad for Brooklyn back then). He helped produce and musically contribute to the last few Bjork albums (he was living in Iceland at the time).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am

Truly an outstanding show. Enjoyed it all.
Avatar 11:53am

Looks like France has Uruguay on the ropes....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am

I want JW to have a show but I also don't want to not have other shows.

Thanks for the musical journey today. A journey of inspired sound.
Avatar 11:56am

Thanks Jonathan, superb morning zounds! gracias!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Jonathan. Nice ambiance for a gray Friday morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am

Seconded, Mr/Ms Bringer of Crud!
Avatar 11:58am

@Crudbringer, always the woodmoo dilemna.... JW would do well for a midweek afternoon show to get us through the end of the workday....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, the old DJs vs. time slots conundrum.

Thanks so much all!! Glad you all had fun. See ya on the 28th.

Thanks, wonderful show.
