Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

There's a guy up this way, annie, who's bought a few radio stations, and plays what amounts to that Music Of Your Life format a good part of the time. It's a crazy mix....Kenny Rogers or Celine Dion and then back to Perry Como or Margaret Whiting or Mills Brothers and then over to Pet Clark, all from his own music collection on these stations he runs just with his own money and requested donations.

Coverage of the Merry Macs in the entertainment press for the decades surrounding the '40s is massive. Lots of ads, too. Variety in Jan. '36 describes them as "Three men and a girl with neat vocal arrangements."

Still hunting for personnel...

A review in June '37 refers to them as "a harmony act" with Lynn Martin "with support from a personable male trio." (Review of a Gene Autry show in Chicago on the same page. His show lasted sixteen minutes.)

They were sued in June '37 for back commissions, at which time Cheri McKay was "no longer with them."

These reviews from the '30s are just fascinating. In '33 they released a record, reviewed in Variety. Reviewer writes, "Merry Macs (whoever they are, for they're new, although probably a nom-de-disk) do okay by their assignments."

Dorothy LaMour in a Loony Tune reminds me of that scene in one of the Hollywood Restaurant shorts where she persuades Jimmy Stewart to dance the conga and then scares him so much with her sexy moves that he announces that Mr. Smith had gone to Washington.

Oscar and UM, me too.
  2:31pm Dean:

Funny you mention Firesign Theatre, @The Oscar, because I thought of Peter Bergman while "It Ain't Necessarily So" was spinning. The intro music for his daily radio show during the '80s on LA's KPFK was a new rendition of the song, every day.

Haven't had TCM for too long now. On Easter family visit, yeah, sister's got it. And late Sunday felt good to find Holiday Inn playing. Fun and comfort-foodish film satisfactions, shticky, some it of with requisite dreadfulness, but worst is blackface number...such yin and yang in the old movie zone.

I think this was the closing music to John Sayles's Lone Star.

So my song list is about 5 songs ahead of what's playing-is my internet connection so slow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

I have no explanation, Doc.
  2:49pm Dean:

@doctorjazz: Sometimes I fail to stop the player I'm using, for whatever reason. Instead, if I pause it and return minutes later, the program picks up where I left it, while the playlist moves on.

Annnnnnd clickystarred.

I see a theme on the playlist. I am a great noticer of patterns

A kick to imagine everyone -- vocalists and musicians -- in the room to cut something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

A real golden throat coming up after Mr. Broonzy.

Is there an eastern cowgirl?
  2:53pm Dean:

Been buying up recordings of Lil Green, for whom Big Bill played. Just love her. She might have recorded this tune, too.
Avatar 2:57pm Roberto:

Oh, peaNUTS. Got it.

Has there ever been a more calming musical act than the Ink Spots? Every time I hear them my blood pressure drops by the third bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm doctorjazz:

That sounded SO Django!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Guido from Cologne:
