Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I kept hearing it go straight from Doug's show to yours, a brief auto-stream song fragment before you took the virtual air room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Rich in Washington:

@DF: did they use that on KSIN?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Listener Scott:

I closed and reopened and I now hear glorious sounds

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Scraps h’m!:

The baseball people, the owners and the writers, sucked the life out of baseball for me. Probably permanently. I haven’t even paid attention to the Mariners, to the point where I don’t know who is on the team. It’s good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

Dominick! Roberto!
Avatar 12:16pm northguineahills:

@Rich: at home I use the iTunes link.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm joe:

Baseball was a huge part of my home life as a child. When I got to my teens I revolted against pretty much all sports as they carried a certain negative conotation to me. I have grown to enjoy them later in life but outside of Soccer I have not really followed. I have as of late with visting many minor league ball games grown interested in Baseball again.
Avatar 12:18pm northguineahills:

@Scraps: Same here. I'm a big baseball fan, especially in my youth, but the marketing, slowness of the proceedings, just killed it for me. I prefer amateur baseball these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Rich in Washington:

I also listen via the TuneIn app on my Roku/TV setup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Scraps h’m!:

Rich, what alternative app? I don’t care about the official app, but I’m open to trying another
Avatar 12:19pm northguineahills:

@joe: Since I was a kid in the 80s, I've been a super soccer nerd (only sport I excelled in, and I liked the international scope of it).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Rich in Washington:

@DF: some of the original KSIN people have been trying to launch the station as on online streaming station, complete with real live DJs and all that old bumper/ID stuff.
Avatar 12:19pm still b/p:

The Les Filles track reminds me of a song I put on a cassette 30 years ago from a Festivals of the Himalayas collection. Why is that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

It reminded me of *this*.
  12:20pm frenchee:

oh this 3dog is a classic singalong!
I could totally see this as a Hoof n Mouth rouser/ender LIAR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Rich in Washington:

@Scraps h’m!: It's called Woof Moo. It's an unofficial app that I think some smartypants handrolled in order to address some issues of the official app.
Avatar 12:21pm still b/p:

Is there a musical anthropologist in the house to triangulate 'em?
  12:21pm asheville jon:

Phillies blew it in the bottom of the ninth yesterday. Gonna be a loooooong season
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Rich in Washington:

Both seem to have buffering issues, though. It seems like when I go take my daily walk, it craps out probably a half dozen times before I'm back in range of my work's wifi.
I might reload the official app again and see if they've got the bugs ironed out yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm joe:

@northguineahills my dad was 1st generation from Sicily in the states. And for the short period of time he was around was when the Cosmos were in their hey day so I got introduced to it that way. Sometime in the early 2000s I got back to it with the ability to access international play.

I love Minor League BB. I'm lucky enough to now be in the area of the Durham Bulls and we have the Brewers Carolina Mudcats too. Thinking that if I get on the MLB train I have to go with ole Milwaukee just because of the there being some local connection and the idea that I have never met a Brewers fan amuses me. :)

Avatar 1:04pm northguineahills:

Phil Schaap, new to me, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm doctorjazz:

Phil Schapp is notorious for playing 20 minutes of (great) jazz music, then pontificating on it for 30-40 minutes, including what food was delivered to the recording session, pining about the lack of jazz knowledge in the current generation (for a few generations now), and dropping names of the musicians he used to hang with. Not many know more, but are harder to listen to, than Phil. (and it's gotten worse over the years).
Avatar 1:06pm northguineahills:

*chair dancing*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm joe:

@doctorjazz now now I would say he plays at least 25 minutes of (great) jazz.
  1:08pm frenchee:

I scooped him on the news that Joe Williams had died, years ago. I was curious why his station wasn't playing tributes to the great JW, so I called the station and asked "So why aren't you playing Joe W?"
Phil's answer: "What are you trying to tell me here?" He was almost indignant.

Oh, and UM, football (soccer) match is only 90 mins, not 3 hrs. w/ a 15 a min halftime, and maybe 2-5 mins of added time to each half, you're guaranteed the match will be over in under 120 mins from kickoff (except tourneys which have Extra Time (OT)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

It all feels like extra time to the uninitiated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Phil Schaap will be sitting with and interviewing some legendary, luminary musician, often an older gentleman with the occasional foggy moment of recall, and our Phil will be correcting and contradicting from here to Sunday. It's shameful, really.
Avatar 1:17pm northguineahills:

If my bros. and I can school my father on soccer and make him a fan (it took a decade and a half, and last summer sitting down w/ him for a weekend explaining the nuances), there is still hope for you. Now, I need someone to sit down w/ me and explain cricket, I love the sport, but much is lost on me. (been watching a portion of the match every weekend the last few years, and still haven't figured it all out).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Doug Schulkind:

He is somewhat self-aware, to his credit. Once at the top of one of his broadcasts the music got cut off, then was restarted a few seconds later. Schaap spent the next five minutes on mic dressing down the poor, inexperienced student who mistakenly opened the wrong CD player at the end of his show. Schaap's attack on this kid was so mean and inappropriate I called in to complain. Schaap answered the phone, heard my complaint, and said, "You are absolutely right and I'm sorry" and then hang up.
Avatar 1:18pm northguineahills:

bravo Doug!
Avatar 1:19pm northguineahills:

(I have that Brasil '77 album [and many more Mendes albums])
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm joe:

Yeah what he plays is great and a bit more then some of the info he provides is good, but he can come off pretty friggin "dicky" for lack of a better term. For a few years it is what I would start my day in the office off with and I would usally tune him out or turn down the volume when I got tired of it when music wasn't playing.
Avatar 1:19pm northguineahills:

You'd be correct w/ Os Mutantes e Gil.
Avatar 1:21pm northguineahills:

(no, it didn't work)
  1:21pm frenchee:

Good going, Doug! So we both has called the Schaap. I'm glad he apologized, at least to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm The Oscar:

I'd be pretty impressed if anyone managed to effectively twist or shout to this version.
  1:22pm frenchee:

HAVE called
I can haz called Schaap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm joe:

During his Bird Flight show he is not above playing a track pointing out a nuance then playing it again then pointing it out again then playing the isolated part of the track then speaking about it for a bit then playing the whole track again. I've heard Charlie Parker groan,
Avatar 1:25pm northguineahills:

@The Oscar: Challenge accepted and completed! (alone in the office).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

I maintain Don Covay is one of Jagger's biggest influences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Doug Schulkind:

Jagger straight-up mimics Covay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

Well, yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm joe:

According to Peter Wolf's Rolling Stone "obit" of Don it seems Keith agrees. www.rollingstone.com...
Avatar 1:31pm northguineahills:

I always had a soft spot for Shonen Knife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Jeff Golick:

Can't believe I missed the Schaapy Talk.
Avatar 1:40pm northguineahills:

Forgot it's almost Easter (I have a problem keep track of the Hebrew lunisolar calendar).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm The Oscar:

I've realized recently that my childhood aesthetic was "old-timey animals in people clothes." This matches that perfectly.
Avatar 1:43pm still b/p:

fwiw, Highfly produced by Alan Parsons.

ARTIE is my favorite big band guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

didn't know that s b/p!
Avatar 1:53pm still b/p:

Jarre's theme for Lawrence of Arabia also has brief similarity to the Shaw track.

What, no Staple Sisters?

Avatar 1:56pm still b/p:

Heard the Ventures version on the radio yesterday and it always brings that ol' LP cover image to mind.
  1:57pm Stevel:

So glad I got to see The Ventures, back in the early 80s. They were a touch concerned that the frisky crowd was going to get someone hurt! It all worked out.
Avatar 2:00pm glenn:

those lyrics are why walk don't run is a great instrumental.
  2:02pm Stevel:

All Ventures, all the time!

surfin' and shrinkage, today.

Off to the Tractor Supply store (they have great gardening supplies). Then lunch. Thanks UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm joe:

Guess he decided to Run not Walk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

See ya, NGH!

UM, do you have any Mac Sabbath? (sabbath cover band dressed as mcdonalds characters)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

I do not!
Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Rich in NC:

Nice Uncle Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm joe:

I watched something last night where a former WFMU DJ stated that the great WM Berger once stated that Ozzy had some of the greatest middle eights. Now I feel the need to go back and listen to Sabbath in a whole diffrent light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm joe:

Not that I needed much of a reason to listen to Sabbath anyway
  2:29pm frenchee:

ooh, I'm going to continue editing book reviews and dream of chicken cacciatore (eating a big Italian sandwich at my desk so as to not miss a minnit of Uncle Michael mayhem!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

That's very thoughtful of you, frenchee. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Mike Sin:

Sun's out... cutting out of work early... Great to hear your show live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Mike...looking forward to your fill-in!

ooh, fill-in of Sin!

Apropos of Passover and matzoh balls (an UM specialty!), I just saw a recipe that puts vodka in the ball bath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

I have heard of this, David. Never tried it.
Avatar 2:38pm βrian:

I've heard of vodka in pastry crusts — to reduce water and gluten build-up, I think.
Avatar 2:41pm βrian:

I was really hoping for some indictments today. Isn't that what Good Friday is about, after all?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm doctorjazz:

Have to ask my sister to put some vodka in the matzoh balls (and on the table).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Uncle Michael:

It's not too late!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm doctorjazz:

strange take on Caravan, the accordion gives it an off balance feel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Lewis:

excellent caravan! and now I must head north Cheers to all and best wishes to those of you who have holidays in the offing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Uncle Michael:

It's the original version.
  2:43pm Stevel:

Cacciatore my be on my list now! Not complicated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm doctorjazz:

True, sounds off kilter, though, rhythm wise, cool though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Uncle Michael:

No, cacciatore is not complicated at all! See ya, Lewis!
  2:48pm frenchee:

thank YOU, Uncle Michael. Friday mornings and afternoons on the Drummer stream are Frenchee destination radio.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

Some fine clapping.
Avatar 2:57pm βrian:

Why does the phrase "Bolivian flake" come to mind?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Uncle Michael:
