Wonderful musical weaving Jonathan and thanks for calling out Ka Baird, she's a really fascinating artist. We saw her playing in the duo Spires That In The Sunset Rise, supporting 75 Dollar Bill and Antietam at Union Pool last September and she passed the blindfold test in flying colors: We didn't realize until later that she was an artist we had already been hearing on FMU...! @melinda: and couple on top of that, outside of the NE corridor, they don't actually own their own tracks, so they don't get priority and often have to find side tracking to let a lumbering cargo train pass. I once took an Amtrak from Jacksonville to Ft Lauderdale (my car was in the shop) and it took 10 hours (and it went to Tampa first, even though there is a track directly down the east coast of FL). It usually would take me +/- 4.75 hours to drive that far.

@ngh: you're right, it's a weird situation they've always been in. I love trains, even the routes that have delays, but it's nice to be in the Northeast where they don't have to share tracks with freight. I took 2 trains to get from Maine to NJ for the marathon and they arrived exactly as scheduled!

that switching in boston tho...
Avatar 11:27am
northguineahills:

@melinda: yeah, I used to go from NYC to Balt/Wash/Philly/RI/Boston all the time. I would show up five minutes before departure, no security theater, and it would still be so much faster (and cheaper) then flying.

Amtrak'ed Vancouver to Oakland one time. Incredible scenery through the mountains.Took a number for the dining car, like #56, sat in the bar car for a long long time. Finally, a guy in whites steps in from the dining car and says "Number 8? Number 8?"
Never did get dinner, just over-liquor'ed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
melinda:

@Linda so true. It's more comfortable than either car or plane, and you see more along the way than you would in the sky or on the interstate.
@steve switching in Boston is kind of nuts since it involves 2 different train stations, but by now I know the T well enough that it isn't too much of a hassle. Sometimes it's worth it to do the Boston-Portland leg by bus, since the station is right next door.

It's so weird I was thinking about all this train stuff this morning coming in. And I get to take the train home today - probably soon because it's snowing like a postcard and nobody's doing anything plus the boss has to drive back to suffolk county - so he's half way out the door already. Crossing the Willie B on the M in a blizzard feels exclusive - better at night but whatever. Wet floors and sniveling snow dampened dainties.
