Morning guest DJ Jonathan. Always healing to hear some West African harp, is it?
9:04am DumDumGuy at the Gates of Dawn:

Indeed it is
  9:05am queems:

so pretty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Adrian in London:

Well, this is very pleasing. Welcome along, Jonathan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Guido from Cologne:

Hello everyone!
9:05am DumDumGuy at the Gates of Dawn:

I preferred the TDK90s and only very occasionally the TDK100s. Still have cases of them.
Avatar 9:05am Readie Righteous:

Love this, Jonathan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am steveo:

Good morning, DJ Jonathan. Beautiful start.
Swag For Life Member 9:07am bk845:

Good morning:) Great song, looking forward to the rest of the show!
  9:08am Mark Williams:

i think the instrument is a kora.
Avatar 9:08am TDK60:

Dum: Oh yeah, I usually use/used 90s anyway. But a 60 is more hi-fi, and a shorter mix-tape is less time for others.
Swag For Life Member 9:08am Jonathan:

Thanks all, so glad to be here!
  9:08am TImBK:

Beautiful song
Swag For Life Member 9:08am Jonathan:

And yep, this is a kora
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am melinda:

hi Jonathan!
Avatar 9:08am TDK60:

One can hear West African harpists in the NYC Subway. A gentle sound amidst the din.
Swag For Life Member 9:09am Tiago from Portugal:

Hi Jonathan, @Mark: your're correct it's called kora.
  9:10am Leelee:

This is lovely :)
  9:10am Brad:

Beautiful song! Where are they from?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Krys O.:

Enjoying your show as I make pancakes on a snow day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Irene Trudel:

I love Entourage Music & Theatre Ensemble. Nice for a snowy day. Their guitarist, Wall Matthews, told me that all 3 albums are bring reissued on Tompkins Square. I'm working on getting him back to the studio for a live performance soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Devin B.:

Oh nice! Been looking forward to checking out this Entourage record.
Avatar 9:37am TDK60:

The show so far is a much needed change of pace.
Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jonathan:

Irene, amazing news. I saw a collection of unreleased stuff coming out soon, but the whole catalog being widely available again is wonderful.

Off to a great start. Wednesday mornings are oftentimes a lot more intense, but agree with TDK60. Kinda miss the gifs, tho

@jonathan i hope that you come back and do another show sooner than 6 years from now
Swag For Life Member 9:45am Tiago from Portugal:

What queems said
Swag For Life Member 9:45am Jonathan:

@Rey - it will get more intense later! Needed to start out a bit more mellow.
Avatar 9:46am TDK60:

More on Vanguard. The LPs used to come with a tri-fold brochure catalog. Lots of great artists famous and obscure. I mean, c'mon: Joan Baez, Country Joe & the Fish, Paul Robeson, Eric Andersen, Theodore Bikel, Sandy Bull!
Swag For Life Member 9:46am Jonathan:

Thanks queems and Tiago, Ken willing I'm sure I'll be around more.

Thrill Jockey has been opening my (older) Ears for a decade and a half now at least. I think first via Tortoise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Rob W:

Wonderful musical weaving Jonathan and thanks for calling out Ka Baird, she's a really fascinating artist. We saw her playing in the duo Spires That In The Sunset Rise, supporting 75 Dollar Bill and Antietam at Union Pool last September and she passed the blindfold test in flying colors: We didn't realize until later that she was an artist we had already been hearing on FMU...! Her residency at Roulette is in May - here's info on a public performance there during the residency: roulette.org...

Avatar 10:23am northguineahills:

@TDK60. It's been more then two decades, and yes, Tortoise was my gateway as well. Bettina Richards deserves some damn good recognition for her art of curating that label!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am sphere:

hi there. very nice show. also, great last name. mine is rather boring, so i envy you. :)
  10:25am Ba Da Ben:

Jonathan should get his own regular show!
Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jonathan:

Very funny, what actually brought me away from NY and thus WFMU 6 years ago was a job at Thrill Jockey. Worked there for 3.5 years.
Avatar 10:26am northguineahills:

nice, Jonathan, still in Chicago?
Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jonathan:

Nope, back here as of a few months ago after some time in LA too!

One of the most brilliant shows I witnessed was Wadada Leo Smith w/ Anthony Braxton at Tonic, I felt like I was on X.
Avatar 10:37am TDK60:

One of the many great attributes of this station: older folks can hear new sounds (*if* they open their Ears); younger folks can hear older things from long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am sphere:

thinking of favorite shows, i'd say that a early 90s show with the Caspar Brotzmann Massaker was about the top--totally transfixing.
Avatar 10:38am βrian:

Like before the turn of the century, TDK60?
Avatar 10:38am northguineahills:

I saw Caspar Brotzmann in the early 2000s, yeah, he put on a good show.

Is getting a colonoscopy a huge scam? I am now 50...and due for one!
Avatar 10:42am northguineahills:

I have this Appleton/Cherry LP, two of my musical heros.

@TDK60: then there are those that never opened their ears at all (like my siblings who never listened to any music of any genre).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am tomasz.:

@WILD NEIL: you can't neglect your ass

@Wild Neil: You get to take off a day from work to poop. Who cares if it's a scam?

Wild Neil. No scam. Get it done. Especially if there's a cancer history in your family.
Swag For Life Member 10:46am Jonathan:

I look away from the playlist for a few mins and all of a sudden this place turns into WebMD
Avatar 10:47am Linda Lee:

Avatar 10:47am βrian:

I thought the recent trend is away from colonoscopies unless there's some mitigating factor. (Family history, etc.)
Avatar 10:47am TDK60:

Just noticed: it's a mostly LP extravaganza.
Avatar 10:48am Sem:

Interesting fact: sorting thru labyrinthine English railway routes and ticket prices, and what you've been playing is fitting in just fine. Good morning, Jonathan, and all.
Avatar 10:49am AnAnonymousParty:

Get your PSA checked too. Prostate cancer treatment is no fun, believe me.
Avatar 10:49am βrian:

@Sem: Do elaborate! What are you trying to track down?
Avatar 10:49am TDK60:

Sem, I have to do the same! Goin' next summer.
Avatar 10:50am βrian:

I had my PSA checked, and it came back: "If you have pets, neuter them to prevent strays."
Avatar 10:52am βrian:

@Sem: Somehow I had the impression you were going through old Victorian-era railroad records. Not sure why.
Avatar 10:52am Linda Lee:

me too. how odd! must be the word 'labarynthine' ..
Avatar 10:52am AnAnonymousParty:

@ βrian: That's what you get for having Bob Barker as your urologist.
Avatar 10:55am Sem:

@10:52 βrian: it has that sort of vibe for sure, but so much of the system, perhaps all of it, has been privatized, that getting schedules and routes and---god forbid--actual prices! is, as the late Princess Diana opined: daunting.
Avatar 10:55am βrian:

Bob insisted we free Willy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am tomasz.:

is it still over 1,000 quid to go from Thurso to Cornwall return?
Avatar 10:56am TDK60:

Sem, Yes I was thinking the very same. Confusing. It'll work out I'm sure. If I may ask, where are you going in olde England?
Avatar 10:56am βrian:

A privatized train system makes about as much sense as a privatized health care system: none.

@TDK60-why do 60 minute tapes sound better-thicker tape than 90's?
Avatar 11:03am northguineahills:

Good for you, Wild Neil: My GI tract doesn't seem to like most foods. I limit dairy to once a week and carbohydrates to once a month, and that helps, but I love dairy, and every blue moon I get a craving for sweets. Some random preservatives also hurt me, which is why I try to make all of my meals from scratch.

Amtrak is sub-par because it was designed to fail, not due to any inherent weakness in public financing of rail.
Avatar 11:19am ||||||WILD||||||||||||||NEIL||||||||||:

@Melinda-sorry to hear that. Can you provide a link for me to read so I can understand that better?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Carmichael:

@TDK, it's a wondrous thing, but often rainy and mucky. The people are wonderful, the village is quaint, and you'll see some brilliant acts. It happens during my birthday month, so I use that as leverage with the Carmichael family.
Avatar 11:21am northguineahills:

@melinda: and couple on top of that, outside of the NE corridor, they don't actually own their own tracks, so they don't get priority and often have to find side tracking to let a lumbering cargo train pass. I once took an Amtrak from Jacksonville to Ft Lauderdale (my car was in the shop) and it took 10 hours (and it went to Tampa first, even though there is a track directly down the east coast of FL). It usually would take me +/- 4.75 hours to drive that far.

I love trains, even the routes that have delays, but it's nice to be in the Northeast where they don't have to share tracks with freight. I took 2 trains to get from Maine to NJ for the marathon and they arrived exactly as scheduled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am steveo:

that switching in boston tho...
Avatar 11:27am northguineahills:

@melinda: yeah, I used to go from NYC to Balt/Wash/Philly/RI/Boston all the time. I would show up five minutes before departure, no security theater, and it would still be so much faster (and cheaper) then flying.
Avatar 11:29am Linda Lee:

i've done nyc to miami a number of times by train. not perfect by far, but i always preferred it to flying by far. a real sense of travel.
Avatar 11:29am TDK60:

NGH & Melinda: Right, even happens on the Pennsylvania line. Freight before people, you know.
  11:30am queems:

my family used to do the auto train from virginia to florida and that was always an experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Mick:

@Linda Lee I'm with you about the sense of travel - much more connection with fellow travelers and vastly greater sense of the landscape.
Avatar 11:34am Sem:

Amtrak'ed Vancouver to Oakland one time. Incredible scenery through the mountains.Took a number for the dining car, like #56, sat in the bar car for a long long time. Finally, a guy in whites steps in from the dining car and says "Number 8? Number 8?"
Never did get dinner, just over-liquor'ed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am melinda:

@Linda so true. It's more comfortable than either car or plane, and you see more along the way than you would in the sky or on the interstate.
@steve switching in Boston is kind of nuts since it involves 2 different train stations, but by now I know the T well enough that it isn't too much of a hassle. Sometimes it's worth it to do the Boston-Portland leg by bus, since the station is right next door.
Avatar 11:37am TDK60:

Jonathan, thanks for the all-vinyls show. Or rekkids, platters, LPs --whichever term is for you.
Avatar 11:37am Linda Lee:

@Mick ~ definitely. always found the flight a bit disorienting, too ~ especially in the dead of winter. just won't fly now. too stressful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am BronwynB:

great show jonathan!
Avatar 11:39am Linda Lee:

@melinda ~ always enjoy the freedom to look, with something to look at. trains take you through communities; bus is the highway.
Avatar 11:39am AnAnonymousParty:

Here in the St. Louis area we like to take a day trip on Amtrak from Kirkwood to Hermann and hit the wineries, and spring is finally here!
Avatar 11:40am TDK60:

Melinda & Linda & NGH: Yes, train travel superior; views; leg room; rest room; more "green" way to go.
Avatar 11:41am crateslinger:

I like to take the Long Island Railroad super early on weekends to see all the drunk teens trying to get home before their parents find out they're gone. Carrying friends, girls with one shoe, boys with puke on their shirts. Funny.
Avatar 11:41am Linda Lee:

(agree with you totally, melinda!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Ken From Hyde Park:

If this is what SM Ken refers to as "hippie noise," I'll take it. Nice selections 'on the vinyl' this morning.
Avatar 11:41am northguineahills:

...and the bar car.... heck, you can BYOB on metro north and LIRR
Avatar 11:41am Linda Lee:

that would be Andy with the 'hippie noise' ~ very funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am blee:

Great sounding show, Jonathan.
Avatar 11:42am TDK60:

Andy doesn't know anything about hippies, noise, or music. There! heheh.
Avatar 11:43am Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ green is the way, in my book. & no he doesn't.

Plus, I prefer train songs to car or plane songs. Plus, great mysteries/thrillers take place on trains. "Strangers On a Train," "Orient Express" Etc!

Fabio talk about filthy hippies and their music. He might actually be kidding.
Avatar 11:50am crateslinger:

I've seen kids left behind by their friends sleeping in the glass house at Jamaica on the Ronkonkoma line. Maybe they got sick of carrying him. Maybe they just think it's funny. I draw an L on their forehead with sharpie.
Swag For Life Member 11:51am 12539:

This has all been quite the fantabulous surprise. Thank you, Jonathan!
Avatar 11:52am Linda Lee:

was Fabio actually one of those Brooklyn hoods who liked kicking hippie ass? sure hope not.

dayyum, Jonathan, loving your set, hitting all of the notes!
Avatar 11:52am Linda Lee:

beautiful show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

Took Amtrak from here to Chicago a couple of times. Stopping to wait for freight trains to clear the tracks was irritating, for sure.
Avatar 11:53am Linda Lee:

me, i found it impossible to be irritated on a train.

It's so weird I was thinking about all this train stuff this morning coming in. And I get to take the train home today - probably soon because it's snowing like a postcard and nobody's doing anything plus the boss has to drive back to suffolk county - so he's half way out the door already. Crossing the Willie B on the M in a blizzard feels exclusive - better at night but whatever. Wet floors and sniveling snow dampened dainties.

Coming up on the hour, opposite Duane:
100% Whatever with Mary Wing

thanks Jonathan. I'll be relistening to this show on the archives for sure

Hey Duane, love your show. Since you're edging towards the chimurenga, how about some Thomas Mapfumo. FYI he is playing his first concert since the 90's at least in Zimbabwe in April.
