Very much enjoying this Keely Smith tribute! One of my favorite Louis Prima comps is that "Capitol Collector's Series" that was complied by WFMU's own Dennis Diken!

  9:59am John in Bklyn:

Sounds Lou Reedy!
Avatar 10:00am Joe McG:

@John: Yes, people often compared them to the VU. Sort of an amped up version. But they were a little sillier and decidedly more English.
Swag For Life Member 10:02am tadpoles:

Funnily enough Joe when the Jazz Butcher was on I kept thinking this sounds a lot like the Monochrome Set. Nice to hear thanks!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Parq:

Saw the Smithereens back at the Dirt Club in Bloomfield in early '82. They were so new on the scene that they were actually opening for a cornball Beatles tribute band that night. Met DiNizio briefly -- sure seemed like a nice guy. So said to hear about his loss.
Avatar 10:10am Joe McG:

Wow, Karl Ward! Thanks for tuning in and thanks for recording this new LP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Little Danny:

Smithereens were one of the few genuine rays of light played on my shitty local classic rock stations growing up in the '80s.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Brian in UK:

Seems Dennis was drumming for Dave Davies' band in London when Ray got on stage for one number. Two years ago today.
Avatar 10:22am the Canterbury wood-elf:

It's notable how uncontaminated by horrible 80s production trends the Smithereens were. I didn't notice at the time.
Avatar 10:23am Mayor Frank:

Where did The Smithereens record? Their sound was always so clean. And what a kind, giving band. RIP Pat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Little Danny:

@canterbury wood-elf: The Smithereens sounded like nothing else being played on commercial radio at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am ChrisB.:

The late Alistair MacLeod for stories revolving around Nova Scotia.
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@Santos: I was never a fan, but I could try again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

More: Lydia Davis; Kelly Link.
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

@Dean: Thanks. Beautiful country up there.
  11:27am rw:

Joe, Space Food Sticks had a Tootsie Roll sort of vibe. Much less chewy though.
Avatar 11:27am Santos_L_Halper:

@Joe harrison or boyle put you off?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Matt Fiveash:

Joe! I haven't heard this Pogues song, or the Zevon one, in many many years, and am shocked that I remember all the words to both. And meanwhile I struggle to remember my own phone number...
  11:27am melinda:

June Tabor does a really haunting version of this.
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@Matt: I know, they get in there and stay there! @melinda: Agree! And the Dubliners do it, too, I think. Eric Bogle the original.
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@santos: Boyle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Brian in UK:

Joe, Ring Lardner. Oh, you want a bit more up to date.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am doctorjazz:

Great set! Zevon, Pugues, stuck at my desk...
  11:29am emily:

Really nice segment, Joe!
Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

@emily: Thanks! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Brian in UK:

Costello produced?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am pantz:

@Joe Check out Wells Tower for great contemporary short stories. "Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned" is a treat!
Avatar 11:30am Santos_L_Halper:

@JoeMac: yeah, i was never a fan either, but i was in a 2nd hand book shop, and there was collection of his short stories, so i figured, "why not?"
  11:31am Dean:

Have to dip into Cheever every once in a while. Recently read a morbid Doris Lessing short story about a homeless woman and her cat.
Swag For Life Member 11:31am tadpoles:

No one quite like Shane McGowan. Very neat.
Avatar 11:31am Joe McG:

@BrianUK: Yes, EC did this one. MacGowan had nothing nice to say about the man, just thought he was mac'ing on Cait.
Avatar 11:31am northguineahills:

Haven't heard this Pogues before, nice...
Avatar 11:32am Marc Francis:

Fucking onions....
Avatar 11:32am Davee:

Avatar 11:33am Joe McG:

@Marc: That song kills me, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Barney Grubbs:

Rebecca Lee's _Bobcat and Other Stories_ is a few years old, but was enjoyable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am doctorjazz:

And Early Waits, my favorite Waits.
  11:34am Listener Alexandra:

This might be my favorite set anyone has ever done on WFMU. Thank you, Joe :-)
Avatar 11:34am Joe McG:

Thanks, Barney, I'll check that out!
Avatar 11:34am Joe McG:

Wow, Alex, now I KNOW it's Christmas! What a nice gift, thank you.
  11:34am melinda:

I like early Waits too
  11:36am Brendan:

Tom is going to reissue Myanmar Shave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Uncle Michael:

Give me early, middle, recent, and future Waits.
  11:36am melinda:

Brendan haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Listener Scott:

My favorite Tom Waits period is just before he swallowed all those razor blades to make his voice do that.

I love the idea of Story Corner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Uncle Michael:

That's my least favorite period. He wrote some good songs but got interesting with heart Attack & Vine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Listener Scott:

(...and the execution. Great set.)
  11:39am Listener Alexandra:

This is absolutely stunning, Joe...thank you for such a stunning show and a set that even tops your many achievements. And happy holidays from your pal Alex ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Brian in UK:

You could see it coming, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Greg from ZONE 5:

Did Bobbie Gentry ever record a bad song? You know what—don't tell me. If she did, I don't wanna know about it.
  11:40am paul:

Had this BG LP in high school. When everyone else was listening to the Who and the Stones.
  11:40am melinda:

Great segue! Tom and Bobbie share a certain vibe, in my mind.
Avatar 11:41am Joe McG:

@Greg: No, she didn't! :)
Avatar 11:41am Joe McG:

@Scott: Maybe I'll make this an occasional feature of the show. I'm really enjoying it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Matt Fiveash:

Seconded, thirded, and on and on that this set is a genius concept. I hope you make it a semi-regular feature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Brian in UK:

Joe, Irene is the only one who has played Ackles' Montana Song. Fits the plan but a bit long.
  11:43am frenchee:

"Camouflage" was so creepy/amazing, all the stories are resonating. THANKS JOE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Ken From Hyde Park:

Story Corner every year at Christmas time!

(Well, maybe more often, actually.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Uncle Michael:

Radio does not get any better than this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Barney Grubbs:

and _Gutshot: Stories_ by Amelia Gray has some entertainingly creepy pieces
  11:44am Mark in Toronto:

How about a Merle Haggard song?
  11:44am Brendan:

Bobbie woulda been great in the B 52s - big beautiful hair
  11:45am paul:

@Mark, If We Make It through December
Avatar 11:45am Joe McG:

You bet, Frenchee! Thanks, Matt, I think I will do it now and then. There could be a whole Brit ballad edition! Country ballads, too. @Brendan: I hope it wasn't a wig, but I guess it was.
  11:45am frenchee:

Lots of MAMAs today and dead or maimed soldiers. NICE!
Avatar 11:46am Joe McG:

@frechee: Next one has inmates!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am pantz:

David Sedaris recommended Wells Tower, so I had to pick it up. Sure enough, it was a winner.
Avatar 11:46am Itzall Ablurr:

Now THIS is the feelgood song of the set. Run Jeannie, RUN!
  11:47am frenchee:

LOUDON! It just gets better n better. GO JOE GO
  11:48am melinda:

Outstanding set! The recent Loudon Wainwright episode of Marc Maron's podcast was a good one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Bobby Whirlwind:

Two more thumbs up for Story Corner. Tell us another Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Brian in UK:

Like all the good songwriters tell you when you get hear them live "If you are waiting for the happy songs, you better leave now"
Avatar 11:49am Santos_L_Halper:

@JoeMac: hmm, someone mentioned 'creepy'. if you like horror at all, you should check out some of algernon blackwood's stuff. lovecraft worshipped him! Plus, it's all public domain on gutenberg
Avatar 11:49am Joe McG:

@Bobby: I got room for at least one more, maybe two!
  11:50am Mark in Toronto:

@Paul: Excellent!
Avatar 11:50am Jeff Moore:

I really enjoyed the private LW3 recital I got to attend at WFMU awhile back - nobody in Studio A but LW3, host Dave Hill and me with a camera.
Avatar 11:52am Lixiviated Life:

Hey, If I wanted to get depressed I would lstare at my checking account. Enough already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Brian in UK:

Joe, think you hit spot AGAIN. Great show.
Next show. Next year.
  11:53am Brendan:

I can vaguely remember you playing a cool tragic ballad about a penniless young man doing a hold up or shoplifting or something to get his girl an engagement ring ?. I thing there mighta been a hanging or electric chair involved. My brain is repressing it - go figure .
  11:53am melinda:

Jeff when was that?
Avatar 11:53am Joe McG:

This Otway is for everyone who talked about "The Highwayman" earlier! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Brian in UK:

Have to confess, Phil Ochs' take on Alfred Noyes poem is my favourite.
Swag For Life Member 11:55am 12539:

Thanks, Joe. Happy Holidays!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

(Seconding the Amelia Gray rec., above.)

Go, Joe, go. Thanks for the great shoe.
Avatar 11:56am Jeff Moore:

@melinda: June of 2015, I think. There's a link to the show on this Flickr page:

(more pictures follow that one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Krys O.:

Just occurred to me that Otway sounds a little like Alex Harvey.
Avatar 11:56am Joe McG:

Thanks for listening, everyone, and commenting. Have a great rest of your year! I won't be here next week, but Bill Mac will play wonderful songs for you. I WILL be here on New Year's Day. Hope some of you will join me in 2018!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Joe. I plan to stick around for Joe Belock and his presentation of The Love-Birds plus a videocast of Chris Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band coming up next!
Avatar 11:56am Sem:

Been just a McGasko-fine morning. Thanks, Joe, see you sometime, maybe the New Year? Bye, all.
Avatar 11:57am Jeff Moore:

Is John Otway the guy who did the immortal "G8 Time"? Voice sounds similar.
  11:57am rw:

Thanks Joe! Have a Merry Christmas!
  11:58am Michiel:

A hum just settled in at the online stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Dominick:

Aaargh! is that hum supposed to be on the right channel?
  11:58am medson:

Great Show. Thanks Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Dominick:

I guess so.
