should i play that simple minds song that everyone likes but me?
Avatar 9:12am
Richard Gruesome:

I love how all the late-Soviet/post-Soviet composers throw a little harpsichord into everything
Avatar 9:14am
Kurt Gottschalk:

they all had state-issued harpsichords, didn't they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am
Doug Schulkind:

What a freakin fantastic run you've had on these Thursday mornings, Kurt. Indelible and hugely pleasurable. I am grateful.
Avatar 9:19am
Richard Gruesome:

they all studied with music theorist Philip Herskovich who was a harpsichordist. Also, the state-issued harpsichords may be somewhat related
Avatar 9:19am
Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks, boss!
Avatar 9:20am
Kurt Gottschalk:

ah, richard, i didn't know that. thanks.
Avatar 9:35am
Richard Gruesome:

Avatar 9:38am
Kurt Gottschalk:

btw, richard, i found this piece listed as a 1975 and a 1980 composition. i went with what's on the cd but do you know the correct year?
Avatar 9:39am
northguineahills:

We could all use a little more Bender.
  9:42am
Alf from Upstate:

Loving this Schnittke. Thank you.
Avatar 9:43am
Kurt Gottschalk:

yeah, the bender is going nicely with the gogol.

hi, alf!
Avatar 9:44am
Richard Gruesome:

Grove and the Ivashkin biography both list the Gogol Suite as 1981
Avatar 9:46am
Kurt Gottschalk:

OK! so that's three different years! but i'll trust your research and change it when i can.
Avatar 9:52am
KP:

Hello and goodbye, Kurt!
Avatar 9:52am
winterese:

i love the transition from gubaidulina to schoenberg to schnittke. kind of a summary of the last century especially in europe, and i don't mean only music...
Avatar 9:53am
Kurt Gottschalk:

hey, kp!

winter, nice observation. and there's one more to come in this little morning quadtych.
Avatar 9:54am
winterese:

oh also, so interesting about Philip Herskovich!
Avatar 9:58am
Richard Gruesome:

Maybe the discrepancy in dates is between the original incidental music and the suite, if you want to get technical. (and I do)
Avatar 9:59am
Richard Gruesome:

but you guys should check out the book Such Freedom, If Only Musical: Unofficial Soviet Music During the Thaw by Peter Schmelz
Avatar 10:00am
Kurt Gottschalk:

oh, that sounds super interesting.
Avatar 10:02am
annie:

i love you, but i'm shutting down the comments, they freeze the 'puter up.. still listening
Avatar 10:05am
Kurt Gottschalk:

as long as we've got your ears, annie, we're good.
Avatar 10:07am
Richard Gruesome:

I've got a skype meeting, so I'm gonna stop listening but I'm staying on the comments so it all evens out.
Avatar 10:08am
Kurt Gottschalk:

RG - we will! thank you for the recommendation!
Avatar 10:09am
Kurt Gottschalk:

ah, p-90, that's nice to hear.
Avatar 10:11am
winterese:

R.G. that's an interesting, maybe even subversive method of listening - not to the music but to the comments :)
Avatar 10:22am
Richard Gruesome:

I think these days it may be more subversive to comment on something you're actually paying attention to rather than immediate reactions
Avatar 10:23am
Richard Gruesome:

(or maybe not, I didn't really think that through before posting)
Avatar 10:23am
northguineahills:

Not familiar w/ Greg Goodman.
Avatar 10:25am
winterese:

oh, thank you got D.B.!!! several years ago i started to listen to derek bailey on the subway (as you know m.l.), almost every time. i think they compliment each other so beautifully.... but greg goodman is marvelous too, maybe even better that train sounds
Avatar 10:27am
Kurt Gottschalk:

haha, i bet greg would like that review.

good morning Kurt, and 1/2 beasts
- are you playing something that's inaudible over the sound of the laptop cooling fan, or am i having technical difficulties?
Avatar 10:47am
