I heard a BBC radio doc about this film, and the day after it had won Best Picture Oscar, the phone operators at the studio were instructed to answer: "Hello, M Gigi M"!
  3:03pm Behemoth:

I'm totally cool with this song; no creep factor.

Oh, and here comes the grey cloud to French music: Carla Bruni is to release an album of Abba songs. In English. *Harry Hill glance to camera*

@Adrian in London Aye yaye yaye. That is very odd. No one will ever top Wing's collection of ABBA covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Adrian in London:

1. Yes, I know she's Italian but she sings in French
2. I liked her cover of Absolute Beginners and I don't care who knows it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Adrian in London:

@spodiodi I like Harry Hill but I also like Henry Hill. But which is better? There's only one way to find out…
Avatar 3:22pm fred:

@Adrian: An Italian model who married a French politician who exploited racism and xenophobia will release covers of Swedish songs in English. The only part that's wrong with this is "racism and xenophobia". But she's been rich all her life, she doesn't care about such trifles.

That's what separates us from the rest of the world - you are willing to fly 3000 miles to see a show. To some that might seem a little crazy. Not to us!! **You are ONE OF US! **. And that's one of the reasons why we love you.

Yes, it was a week of terrible vibes and behavior. I have become numb to it. There is so much evil going on lately. Don't want to be numb to it but otherwise it's too much. All we can do is pray for help, if you believe.

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Rob Kopp:

@Fred. I bought his first compilation, a Dutch LP that was released in 1980. Denomination blues was an inspiration for Mirror of love by The Kinks
  3:54pm JakeGould:

as a female director it really pisses me off that women are seen as being authoritative, since being the boss is my major joy in life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm BronwynB:

i mean that women are NOT seen as being authoritative
Avatar 4:40pm fred:

@Brownwyn: I don't think women not being seen as authoritative is the issue. Maybe more like the irrational rejection of women who dare being so?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Adrian in London:

This song is so lovely: I know it from the great Yo la Tengo cover (Georgia can make anything sound great – but this is fantastic)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm BronwynB:

oh yeah fred thats a good point. kind of like how no one would ever accuse hillary of not being authoritative, but people call her a bossy bitch and worse and while it wasnt the only reason she lost, it certainly didnt help.

@Sheila, I want to remind you of a beautiful record by Robin Ward, who made it big in the female vocalist world. The single is Wonderful Summer b/w Dream Boy. Produced by Perry Botkin Jr. Not sure if he wrote them. And there is a Bass fuzz tone on Wonderful Summer way in the background; a little trivia there. They sped up her voice to sound like a teenager.
Avatar 4:45pm djsheilab:

@Brian Cat I LOVE THAT RECORD!!! Perfect for the end of summer.

lovely Newman song
Avatar 4:50pm fred:

@Bronwyn: Hillary is a good example of how women can be as ruthless as men, so just get rid of stereotypes. Sadly, I don't think Bernie would have won against Trump. Selfishly, I'm just glad we got Trump-lite instead of Hitler-lite this year.
  4:51pm Waking Bacon:

Randy Newman I think he is a love him or hate him singer. yikes... dodges objects being tossed my way.
Avatar 4:52pm Brian Cat:

Nice to hear a happy song from RN.
  4:53pm Waking Bacon:

it did strike me as not so bad lol
Avatar 4:53pm fred:

@Waking Bacon: I think I got a few of those tossed your way. Fair enough, I never liked him much
  4:54pm Waking Bacon:

this rocks :)
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Rob Kopp:

2 other love him or hate him singers: Kevin Coyne and Peter Hammill. And I love both.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 4:54pm ncjay:

every song so far from this Alvvays album is really good!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm WO Town Wick:

Great show Sheila. I love that Darlene McRae song. First heard it when I bought a CD at a YLT Hanukkah show of songs Ira liked (they of course covered it later). Thanks for the cheery warm voice on this day.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Itzall Ablurr:

re; love/hate Randy Newman. Perhaps. Like Dylan, Waits, Petty, The Shaggs (?) and a host of other musicians, it's the SONG not the singer. That was a beautiful song, in my opinion, and not hindered but FORMED by his admittedly "different" vocal style.
Avatar 4:56pm Brian Cat:

Agree, clicky star here.
  4:56pm Waking Bacon:

I hear ya @Itzall a bluRR
  4:56pm Eddie Caffrey:

Loved the old Radio Caroline jingle Perpetual Langley obviously made for Dave Lee Travis!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm WO Town Wick:

Not crazy about RN the vocal style but I think he is a heck of songwriter.
Avatar 4:57pm Brian Cat:

THe clicky star was for Alvvays. Three stars in this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm BronwynB:

they just dont write lyrics the way they used to
Avatar 4:57pm djsheilab:

@Eddie Caffrey I was always wondering who she was referring to! And that it was for Radio Caroline. Thanks for clearing that up.

woah amazing harmonies at the beginning of this one
  5:19pm chalmers:

Those Tammys harmonies were usually put together by Lou Christie, I believe.
Avatar 5:21pm fred:

@The Contessa: I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine is such a masterpiece for me (and I only heard about it because of Vicki)
  5:23pm Michael Z:

Thank you Franny playing a young Janis Ian. She had two great career peaks and continues to put out wonderful records.

@Sheila Britney? You've played Sting on your show; it's all uphill from there… ;-)
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Rob Kopp:

Wow what a bass. Sorry, of course I should say: Wow what a voice.
Avatar 5:38pm Brian Cat:

It's storming like the dickens here is NW Jersey. Like they said it would. The weather moves East so Sheila you might be able to get a power nap before driving home.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Rob Kopp:

I can hear another import-CD from Mexico
Avatar 5:38pm fred:

Syreeta - lovely song from when ncmarie and I got together! And we both recognized it immediately!
  5:50pm Eddie Caffrey:

That Syreeta song reminded me of Shoorah Shoorah by Betty Wright! from around the same time-mid '70's

Hi miss Sheila, my name is Kaelan and I'm from Toronto! First off, thank you for the lovely introduction to Suomi queen, Ann Christine. I can't believe that as a 20-something Finn, I've never come across her music. Kiitos!

I take it by your enthusiasm towards all things Japanese that you'd know a few great places to look for live music in Tokyo. I'm traveling there in October and would love to experience some swingin' girl pop! If you could curate a playlist with some more Japanese tracks, that would be awesome as I don't even know where to start!

My coworker Daniel introduced me to your show a few months ago and I'm hooked! Thank you, thank you, thank you for the refreshing playlist each week as it's the first thing I tune into on Monday mornings and truly the best way to start the week!
