Avatar 11:49am Sem Chumbo:

I bribed the doorman with some just-baked bialys.
Really, ya gotta tighten up security around there.

Lightbulbs, more light, that would help a LOT.

Hiya, Bill.
Avatar 11:55am fred:

@Bill: The pic on your playlists page was used for a music festival at work a few years ago. We peons had some fun saying it symbolized the effort to stop time while in a precarious position, as people in the street don't give a fuck
Avatar 11:55am Bill Mac:

Seriously, a story for whenever we get to share a beer.
Avatar 11:57am Bill Mac:

Thanks Fred - I like it because Harold is always gets short shrift compared to Buster

Hey, hey.
Jeez it's dark in here (trips going up the stairs, miraculously his bottle of Old and Peculiar is still intact, bends down to retrieve it and watches his quarter bottle of special malt fall from his top pocket)
Anyone got a pan and brush?
Avatar 12:14pm Bill Mac:

Ah yes, hammered dulcimer - a band that eventually comes to mind that uses it - Taraf de Haidouks.

All hail you mudder scratchers!!!
Avatar 12:15pm Sem Chumbo:

Not a sponge?
  12:16pm P-90:

I've seen a few dulcimer players at Renaissance Fairs who were definitely hammered. Definitely,

I suppose the later Hi Ball Years weren't the same
Avatar 1:12pm coelacanth∅:

my mother sometimes drank a "high ball" when i was little.
i still don't know what's in one.
  1:13pm P-90:

Yes, Hello to coel , still not extinct
Avatar 1:15pm Sem Chumbo:

..and distinct for that.
  1:15pm P-90:

And thanks @DJ Bill for being the first human I ever heard mash The Ventures, B-52s, and Pet Clark together in a musical discourse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Stanley:

@ coelacanth∅ - I thought a "high ball" was a type of glass, rather than a drink. I might be wrong
Avatar 1:17pm Bill Mac:

What happened and where are my pants?
Avatar 1:18pm Brian in UK:

Bill, usual place on your head.
Avatar 1:19pm Sem Chumbo:

Have another highball, Bill, and that matter will cease to matter.
Avatar 1:20pm coelacanth∅:

hey P-90! how ya been? - hopefully also not extinct. (that's guitar pick-up, no?)
  1:22pm P-90:

A "Highball" can be either a cocktail or a glass or neither, depending on your context and your anatomy
Avatar 1:23pm coelacanth∅:

Stanley that's feasible. it was probably my parents' own code -like they always used that type of glass for a particular drink.
Avatar 1:26pm coelacanth∅:

okay, i cheated and it looks like P-90's correct. the drink is the simplest mixed drink, ie: liquor with one non-alcoholic beverage added.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm mauri:

I see you have no pants Bill. Would you be interested in purchasing a bicycle for some wheeling activities?
Avatar 1:27pm Sem Chumbo:

Completely unrehearsed, nice one, mauri.
Avatar 1:27pm coelacanth∅:

just keep that funny looking hat on so you don't get a chill.
Avatar 1:28pm Bill Mac:

Wheeling activities? I assume we're still talking about bicycles?
Avatar 1:28pm Brian in UK:

Bill, got to cut and run shortly. Will catch the remainder of this stunning musical gallimaufry later.

Have a good weekend, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Stanley:

Well, the UK certainly has the nude cycling scene well and truly sorted
Avatar 1:29pm Bill Mac:

Right-oh Brian! I'm back in a couple weeks possibly see you then!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Stanley:

Avatar 2:02pm Bill Mac:

@Sem I think the question you should be asking is rock music is filled with guitars. Insights?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Fran:

Hi Stanley - I will - its possibly the only Squarepusher project I genuinely like. Wire always a winner and in the same venue tomorrow Michael Rother supported by another Colin Newman project - that'll do for me!
Avatar 2:03pm fred:

Speaking of theory, maybe I should have gone to the march for science

Avatar 2:21pm Bill Mac:

Second attempt coming shortly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm doctorjazz:

I'll take a stab at Latin American horn use...In the 30s and 40s, pop was dominated by big bands, both in Amareican Music and Latin American music, and there was lots of cross over, with Latin Big bands getting play and popularity in the US (to the point that Ricky Ricardo, Lucy's husband, became a TV celebrity). Pop tastes diverged, though, Louis Jordan streamlined jazz, and Bill Haley and others replaced the horns with guitar/bass/drums, which was more DIY, edgier, easier to manage and less expensive to tour with. Latin Music continued on to Salsa and other dance music, which remained horn and big band centric (economics probably played a roll; after the war, travelling with a big band in the US became much more expensive, the Union got more pay for players, and very few big bands survived). The fact that horn based music remained pop/dance music in Latin America kept that kind ot band front and center.
(made this all up, but seems logical).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Fran:

Balearic Beatzheart!
Avatar 2:24pm Bill Mac:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Dave in Vermont:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Fran:

Final comment for tonight other than thanks and goodbye until next time is - am I imagining it that Ry Cooder must have modelled his singing on Percy Sledge - first time I've made the connection!
Avatar 2:30pm Bill Mac:

@Dave - Yes indeedy - too bad they turned into the stylized hit machine later in their careers. They were just so good in the late 60s/early 70s.
Avatar 2:31pm Sem Chumbo:

See again sometime, Fran!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 2:51pm Sem Chumbo:

This last set has lacked nothing for me. Thanks, Bill, and all. May 5th it is.
Avatar 2:51pm fred:

@melinda: I think Kitty Wells' version is my favorite. Former (and sorely missed by me) DJ Laura Cantrell had a nice cover too on her "Kitty Wells Dresses" record, which I like a lot
Avatar 2:51pm Bill Mac:

M&B Will do! Two weeks from now, same time same station!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm melinda:

@fred I'll have to look for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm melinda:

btw, is Cantrell pronounced with the accent on the first or last syllable?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm doctorjazz:

1st syllable.
Thanks, Bill, enjoyed the show.

Miss Laura's show as well... Used to listen to her on WKCR before she came to FMU.
