Listener comments!

  9:26am Bobbin' for Lobster:

I heard Bill's herniated disk caused him so much pain, he had to resort to listening to Mantovani records to numb himself completely.
Avatar 9:29am Sem Chumbo:

I heard that when he wore out the records he spent his days riding elevators just for the music. No real substitute, though, it was cut with stuff.
Avatar 11:56am Bill Mac:

Thank you and goodnight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Going about 2 minutes over. My apologies, Bill!
Avatar 12:01pm Bill Mac:

Thanks for the heads up Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Stanley:

I'm on starting grid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Parq:

is this thing on?
Avatar 12:02pm V Priceless:

hey Mr. Mac and gentle persons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Stanley:

Vrooooooom and we're off!
Avatar 12:03pm ndbob:

afternoon Bill and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Doug Schulkind:

The only thing better than Bill Mac?

Bill Mac 'n' Cheese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Studio B! Hitting the big time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Rich in Washington:

Mmm.. The roar of the engines.. I dusting of Track-Dri in my open beer.
Avatar 12:06pm Bill Mac:

Yes yes! Its working!!!
Avatar 12:07pm Sem Chumbo:

So, did you hear the one about the herniated disk jockey?

Too soon? Hiya, Bill, Zzzzzzeroheads.
Avatar 12:08pm Bill Mac:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Parq:

Who came in?
Avatar 12:09pm Bill Mac:

No worries Sem, it's funny. Laffing through the tears....
Avatar 12:11pm Sem Chumbo:

A Rigoletto moment. I can dig it.
Avatar 12:12pm Brian in UK:

Hey Bill, your back.

Do you know Mantovani's wifes name?

Womantovani. Ta Da.
Avatar 12:13pm Bill Mac:

Wow, where's my shoe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm doctorjazz:

Is it THAT hour yet?
Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey Bill, when you're done, don't forget to disconnect the studio from stream. Last Sunday a DJ filling in for D:O Radio forgot to, and the stream was down for 12 hours.

No pressure or anything.
Avatar 12:16pm Bill Mac:

DJ! greetings!
Avatar 12:16pm Brian in UK:

Bill, on a serious note. I found that Diclofenac was very effective when I had a bad back, got me round Sri Lanka backpacking. You only know how good a drug is when you stop using it.
Avatar 12:17pm Bill Mac:

Doug, I'll make double sure
Avatar 12:19pm Bill Mac:

@Brian I'm going the therapy route now, not bad but you know how we want to be fixed immediately
Avatar 12:20pm V Priceless:

hey xtc!
Avatar 12:20pm Bill Mac:

Hey VP!
Avatar 12:21pm Sem Chumbo:

Diclofenac was introduced as Voltaren by Ciba-Geigy in '73.
Anything with *volt* in the name has just got be good.
Avatar 12:22pm V Priceless:

Bill! good to hear ya!
Avatar 12:24pm Bill Mac:

Is seemed like every time I crawled into a room there were 3 people with three different solutions to my problem - which means a lot of people have this problem.
Avatar 12:24pm Sem Chumbo:

Loved that transition.
Avatar 12:26pm Bill Mac:

@VP Hey can you get me that song you did so I can play it at a future date? I forget where we left it but I got a string of dates coming up and it would be a good one to share.
Avatar 12:30pm Sem Chumbo:

Ms. Vicki's got a hell of an ear. Thanks for this one, BM.
Avatar 12:31pm V Priceless:

@ Bill - sure! Lemme get going with that, thanks!
Avatar 12:31pm Bill Mac:

@Sem I know, she's a genius.
Avatar 12:36pm Brian in UK:

Captain Beefheart released singles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Stanley:

Welcome back, Bill.
  12:41pm Ramblin' Ray:

Tasty sounds Bill!
Avatar 12:43pm Bill Mac:

Tanks RR!
Avatar 12:44pm Soul Captain:

Bill Mac, it must be 3 in the morning
Avatar 12:46pm Bill Mac:

Hey man, I dunno if I could do that now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Stanley:

Gal Costa was performing a FREE concert in Lisbon, the effing weekend before we visited.
Avatar 12:48pm Bill Mac:

She's still touring?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Parq:

Does anybody know how accurate Mort Shulman's translations of Brel songs tend to be?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Stanley:

Yup, just checked, she's playing Lisbon and Porto again in November. Mmmmmm......
Avatar 12:52pm Bill Mac:

@PARQ How accurate is the SAHB version? I was just reading that the Brel version was an anti war tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Parq:

Not now, obviously, but I really recommend Camille O'Sullivan's version of "Next". For that matter, I really recommend her version of anything.
Avatar 12:53pm Bill Mac:

@Stanley - does she tour all over or just Spain?
Avatar 12:53pm V Priceless:

Yeah! Ha! I was gonna ask, 'can Scott Walker be far behind?'
Avatar 12:56pm Bill Mac:

Does Scott have a cover of this? I could definitely see that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Stanley:

Seems like it, Bill. Portugal and Brazil. She sure don't visit up here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Stanley:

Blimey, that's some LP cover!
  12:59pm melinda:

Hi Bill and folks!
Avatar 12:59pm Bill Mac:

I think she invented that fashion trend.
Avatar 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Yes Stanley, Studio 1 had some great covers.
Avatar 12:59pm Bill Mac:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 1:00pm KP:

Bill Mac and Allen Ginsberg! Hey you two!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Stanley:

Parq - have you heard Michelle Van Outen cover Brel's songs? Very recommended, too.
Avatar 1:00pm Bill Mac:

KP!!! Howdy!
Avatar 1:01pm Brian in UK:

Tyger, tyger bright in the forests of the night.

Is that how it goes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Rich in Washington:

Weird. I just the other day found the edition of this Ginsberg LP that's entitled Archetypes the other day. I had no idea it existed. It's got Elvin Jones and Don Cherry on a few tracks.
  1:03pm melinda:

I had to take my computer to the Apple Store for diagnosis this morning, was playing around with the iPads and accidentally started blasting Neu! when I went to the FMU homepage. Fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Parq:

Bill (1) the Harvey version is the Mort Shulman translation, which pretty much all English-speaking singers use. (2) the Costa cover is the greatest camel toe shot of all time.

Stanely: Don't know her, will check it out. Thanks for the tip!
Avatar 1:10pm Bill Mac:

Parq knows best!
  1:12pm Guido from Cologne:

Helle Bill!
Avatar 1:13pm Bill Mac:

Hi Guido!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Stanley:

I used to smoke Camels
Avatar 1:19pm Bill Mac:

So did my Grandpop. Those things will kill you!
Avatar 1:23pm still b/p:

They also helped kill my grandpa, but he still made it to 80-something after decades of Camel-izing, and he kept the habit until he was about to round the last turn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Stanley:

They gave me the hump.
Avatar 1:25pm Bill Mac:

It does flatter you...
Avatar 1:26pm ndbob:

I need to go - excellent show Bill!
Avatar 1:27pm Bill Mac:

Later Bob!
Avatar 1:28pm KP:

  1:28pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar 1:29pm Sem Chumbo:

Sweet stuff right here.
Avatar 1:29pm Bill Mac:

still b/p Affects people randomly. I never get it when I see people in their final years still puffing away. I'm kinda jealous!
Avatar 1:32pm still b/p:

I wonder if In The Future (spoken with reverb) there will be a firm and specialized forecast for how food and other substances and vices will affect each individual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm doctorjazz:

Bread! Cool!
(my mom smoked a ton; lived until 90, but had lung cancer then. Good outcome? Dunno.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Stanley:

My pal's old man smoked from 14 years old till 92. In the last few years he used to say it was only the tar in his lungs which held him up.
Avatar 1:41pm V Priceless:

great track, this!
Avatar 1:47pm Bill Mac:

It's been boring a hole in my head
Avatar 1:48pm Brian in UK:

Mike Watts is playing Cafe Oto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Stanley:

The Magnetic Fields - the Missus's favourite outfit.
I call them the Magic Fingers.
Avatar 1:49pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar 1:50pm Brian in UK:

Blossom Toes, a very clean combo, so they say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Guido from Cologne:

Under the dictatorship of Gogio Gromesky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Guido from Cologne:

Brilliant album though
Avatar 1:52pm Bill Mac:

Watt's always working that's for sure
Avatar 1:52pm Brian in UK:

Bill, hate to write this but got to cut out. Lovely to hear you, glad there are some more opportunities coming soon.
Avatar 1:53pm Brian in UK:

Side two track one.
Avatar 1:53pm Bill Mac:

Hey Brian, nice of you to sit in man, catch you soon.... instrumental version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Stanley:

Bye Brian. Shlater.
Avatar 1:54pm still b/p:

Taking no sides, but if this were recorded today, would Harrison and Beatles get slammed for cultural appropriation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm doctorjazz:

Think I like it better as an instrumental.
Avatar 1:57pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Bill and Zzzzzzzero people

...regarding George Harrison - i'd have you anytime.
Avatar 1:58pm Sem Chumbo:

Yeah, there's a good case for that @doctorjazz.
Avatar 1:58pm V Priceless:

heya fish! there was a Claw! sighting on Belock's show this past Monday
Avatar 1:59pm Soul Captain:

George did much more with Indian culture than a song or two so it would be a hard case to make.
Avatar 2:00pm coelacanth∅:

hey VP! ...i miss that Bear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Guido from Cologne:

They were teenagers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Guido from Cologne:

Gromelsky made them a pschedelic act.
Avatar 2:03pm coelacanth∅:

(i don't need to hear within you without you with no vocals. the music is great; but the lyrics are the main thing.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Guido from Cologne:

one of the best Gibb brithers songs ever!
Great version also.
Avatar 2:07pm KP:

Goon Moon? Very great nonetheless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm doctorjazz:

Do love that Bee Gees cover as well!
Avatar 2:09pm coelacanth∅:

the way goon moon did it it reminds me of "superman".
  2:12pm melinda:

What a great song title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm doctorjazz:

Faces! Sounding VERY 60's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Mrs Stanley:

Hi Bill, everyone, loving this one!
Avatar 2:20pm KP:

Bill, your things from England bit is getting to Mary Jo, the would-be Brit.
Avatar 2:21pm Bill Mac:

Avatar 2:21pm Sem Chumbo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Mrs Stanley:

motion seconded; hi sem
Avatar 2:22pm Bill Mac:

Oh hi Mrs Stanley!!!
Avatar 2:25pm coelacanth∅:

not a bad idea, Bill - but then i'm sure each individual here could have a nomination for an artist with a big catalogue that should get more airplay on wfmu.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Parq:

Speaking of music by our parents ("our" meaning folks Bill's and my age), Joe McGasko did a great tribute to the "Persuasive Percussion" series on his show this past week.

Avatar 2:39pm coelacanth∅:

haha! i used to put my father's persuasive percussion (& his "provocative percussion") records on his (forbidden) stereo when they went out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Parq:

I think my dad bought his (he only bought one, from the "provocative" series) pretty much *because* he had just bought a stereo.
Avatar 2:43pm Bill Mac:

My dad used to borrow Rusty Warren records from my Uncle - hid them in the broken safe.... Knocker's Up!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Stanley:

I like what I'm hearing about this "provocative percussion"
Avatar 2:44pm Bill Mac:

Yeah I don't recommend the Rusty Warren albums
Avatar 2:45pm Sem Chumbo:

Haha, Rusty Warren. And maybe a side or two of Triple X Red Foxx.
Avatar 2:47pm Bill Mac:

I think we have Redd downstairs, along with LaWanda Page (Aunt Esther)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Rich in Washington:

We had Whipped Cream and Other Delights, which kept mysteriously disappearing and reappearing. I like to think that my mom would get mad and throw it in the trash and my dad would either dig it out or replace it.
Avatar 2:50pm Sem Chumbo:

Been good fun hearing you again, Bill. Looking forward to your other fill-ins, especially that Sunday morning thing. See you and all next time.
Avatar 2:50pm Bill Mac:

I was sposed to play something from that today
Avatar 2:51pm V Priceless:
