  Sat. 10/15/16 3:15am Larry:

I actually read Jonathan Livingston Seagull! Gnostic spirituallity in pop culture clothing for the 70s; as Negativland put it "a slow and indiscriminate age."

Avatar Sat. 10/15/16 3:25am the Canterbury wood-elf:

When I was 10 I was displaced from England to a small town in central Wisconsin. I was one of the weird kids who they didn't know what to do with, so put in the "gifted/talented" bracket. A few of us (including the older brother of John from Deerhoof!) got to be part of an experiment involving a student from the local UW campus who was trying out educational methods on us. I can't remember much about her. But in retrospect she seemed to be coming from a really good place. She lent me some books to read, including Jonathon Livingston Seagull. This was 1980. We were all into "Choose Your Own Adventure" books back then (remember them?) and starting to get into D&D. I remember reading JLS and taking it all rather literally, thinking it was actually about a seagull. Or something. But I appreciated her attention and interest in my mental development. i wonder where she is now...
Avatar    Sat. 10/15/16 3:28am Stashu:

You have the CRAZIEST stories! But they are good. Also adults rarely understand children. Sorry about that...
Avatar    Sat. 10/15/16 3:28am micah:

canterbury youre going to inspire stashu to start playing the jonathon livingston seagull soundtrack which will provoke an underground volcano to erupt engulfing all of us into a miasmic avalanche of hot molten lava

Avatar    Sat. 10/15/16 3:29am Stashu:

Neil did you know about the new R and the L album?
Avatar Sat. 10/15/16 3:30am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Yeah, i got the feeling she was really trying. There was another book called "The Narrow Gate" or "The Narrow Way" or something, but I've been unable to figure out what that was (another bit of 70s pop-gnostism, I suspect).

Thanks for the Loaf track, Stashu! You're the best : )

Avatar Sat. 10/15/16 3:33am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Gary Gygax was from Wisconsin, something we were vaguely proud of! Ha, I'd forgotten about "saving throw". Still have my platonic solid dice buried away somewhere. Chaotic neutral! 18 Charisma!
  Sat. 10/15/16 3:36am neil:

always chaotic neutral!<grog drinker>
Avatar Sat. 10/15/16 3:43am the Canterbury wood-elf:

What alignment would Stashu be? Chaotic good, presumably. And definitely 18 Charisma. My favourite character was a druid, curiously (decades later I find myself watching sunrises from stone circles on misty mornings, no joke...)

(sorry for all you people who have no idea what we're talking about en.wikipedia.org...

  Sat. 10/15/16 3:49am neil:

more than just physical, it's like someone who others can believe in. a level ov attraction, <bards play music> <find treasures> <go on quests>
Avatar Sat. 10/15/16 3:53am the Canterbury wood-elf:

"Charisma is the measure of the character's combined physical attractiveness, persuasiveness, and personal magnetism...Charisma influences how many spells spontaneous arcane spellcasters (like sorcerers and bards) can cast per day, and the effectiveness of said spells."

(it's on a scale from 1? to 18)

neil: Good catch on the Dick Vaughn thing. JLS had a bit of content in it, unlike the New Age bestsellers The Celestine Prophecy and A Course in Miracles--as utterly empty as Donald Trump's soul. And Stashu, thanks for the the Tiki music!

Avatar    Sat. 10/15/16 5:08am Rob W:

Stashu - the opening band at our HONK NYC! show was the Merasi Master Musicians of Rajasthan. They're basically the house band of the Merasi school in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan in north India. The Merasi people have been renowned as performing artists for centuries - but on the other hand they're an untouchable caste so they've faced lots of discrimination. Folk Arts Rajasthan is a non-profit that helps run the school and organized their tour. The band doesn't really have its own web page but you can learn about them and more about the school and the Merasi people at www.folkartrajasthan.org .
Avatar    Sat. 10/15/16 5:10am Stashu:

Thank you so much Rob! They are a deeply inspiring group of musicians. They have such a radiant way of being and performing.
