  3:07pm Listening Out There:

Is this program...waterproof? Does it require a new headphone jack?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Ike:

During the Tom Wilson "fill-in" on Monday, I got curious and googled him. That led me to the Texas Monthly article where you, Irwin, are quoted saying, "He didn’t want a handout, and didn’t claim victimhood because his skin was black."

Sometimes you really ARE a tedious ideologue with a hustle.
  3:10pm Laura L:

So we see the building on left is Hillary's jail--it the building on the right named "Jail Trump"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Irwin:

You should read more about Wilson, Ike. I was paraphrasing his own words. You can really be a tedious reactionary.
  3:13pm Listening Out There:

I plead the Fifth.
  3:18pm f0f0 (:

Hello, Irwin, and all of you tedious or non-tedious folks! I have love for all of you!

And welcome back, Irwin! I missed you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Irwin:

I love you, Ike, in all your tedious reactionariness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Ike:

You seem defensive about your words. Do you feel the need to point out that you were paraphrasing him because you can see that what you said looks pretty bad, or are you willing to own what you said? Hiding behind "I was paraphrasing a black guy so it's okay" is weak tea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Irwin:

I own what I said. My name is attached to the quote. You're the one who seems uncomfortable with the comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Michael 98145:

thank for reminding us of Cub ..
Avatar 3:24pm Roberto:

Aww Irwin sounds adorable!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Michael 98145:

JAIL Booji Boy
  3:25pm Laura L:

This sounds more like Bruce McCullough's character "Kathy" than Monica--Hi Kath!!! What'd you do on your day off?
  3:25pm Listening Out There:

Mr. Bill is subbing today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Ike:

Just wanted to be sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Irwin:

We're good, Ike.
  3:27pm Polyus:

Remember when heroin was passe?
Avatar 3:27pm V Priceless:

@ Irwin - did you bring enuff drugs for the entire class?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Michael 98145:

guess we've moved on to opioids
  3:29pm j:

Joe Frank today please??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Ike:

Wait, you LOVE me? You dirty hippie.
  3:33pm wild neil:

PEACE Irwin et al! I am in supercuts awaiting pre interview haircut...i am out of work!!! opiods? i heard oxycontin goes for twenty bucks a tablet wheras heroin is two bucks a baggie...wow its 1974 all over again....
Avatar 3:35pm Sem Chumbo:

We all need to learn to be loved, ike.
I read that somewhere.
Whole Earth catalog, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Irwin:

In a manly way, of course. Like bowling teammates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Michael 98145:

good luck with the job search, neil
  3:44pm wild neil:

thsnks mike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Devin B.:

That ratio sounds low
  3:47pm Dean:

Now, there's an idea for a compilation: Wire songs that suck.
  3:48pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello all Chusidians. No criticism today , Irwin. Political or otherwise. Nothin but unconditional love , in an appropriate way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Passaic River Blues:

I didn't know a Tom Wilson installment was aired on Monday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Hughie Considine:

I know a lot people worship Chairs Missing, but damn, my beloved Wire are sometimes hard to love. Last few records have been excellent though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Irwin:

I gave Ken Music Factory ep2 because he needed to plug a one-hour gap. It was not a good show. Wilson and Odetta spent too much of the hour laughing uproariously about not a lot of funny. I think Odetta was nervous and Wilson was trying to make her comfortable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Passaic River Blues:

Thank you, Ken and Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Linda Lee:

happen to love 'song for my father' no matter who plays it. just a pretty, pretty tune. good afternoon everyone & screw the DEA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Irwin:

Horace Silver is a top-notch composer. His keyboard work ain't bad either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Linda Lee:

this week has been a true shit show ~ so the music is indeed medicinal. thank you Irwin!
  4:16pm Lyle:

The Duke of Iron. A Wilkes-Barre native, if I am not mistaken. A neighbor of Rupert Holmes and often cited as the influence for the song, "Him." Fun Fact: He was Michael Pollard's stepfather, and he even had a cameo in the movie "Skeeters." It's a brief scene where he is impaled by a giant mosquito's proboscis in the men's room of a Stuckey's just outside of Lima, Ohio. He would later briefly serve as a spokesperson for Certs until Retsyn abuse sidelined him in 1977. Lost touch with him after that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Irwin:

Was that a typo, Linda? I can fix it. Or is that a term of qualitative supremacy I've missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Irwin:

Lyle -- Yes, that was the Duke. It's amazing how much you know about these obscure cultural figures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Linda Lee:

it's one of those terms i hear, but never read. pronounced shit-show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Linda Lee:

if only i had a better description for this past week. alas, it's the best one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Irwin:

I'll take it in the complimentary spirit in which it was intended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Linda Lee:

oh Lord! now i get it! i wasn't talking about your show at all! i was talking about my week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Ike:

Thanks for keeping these comments open to potshots at yourself. But let's be honest: you love it. You're just a little like Trump in that respect.

Bowling teammates? Ha. Okay. I like that. I'll give that an ROTFL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Linda Lee:

i adore your show the most Irwin! i would never refer to your show as anything like a shit show. apologies!!
  4:22pm Laura L:

A shit-show's got to be related to a shit storm of one variety or another having hit, right LL?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Linda Lee:

Yes, Laura L! exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Parq:

I understood you, Linda. By the way, I have a friend who uses that expression the way I use "well".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Irwin:

I re-read what you wrote and now understand what "this week" was referring to. Mea culpa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Linda Lee:

thank you Parq. i feel extremely silly for having misled our dear host. heavens me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Linda Lee:

mea culpa too! thanks for understanding!
  4:26pm Dean:

"This week has been a true shit show" ≠ "The show this week has been true shit."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Irwin:

Don't misoverunderestimate me, Ike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Linda Lee:

indeed. thank you Dean! :-)
  4:27pm Laura L:

I had understood you right off the bat, LL--I think Irwin's reading fast sometimes 'cause he's got platters to spin, plus that reactionary Ike got him all sensitive today! Ha ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Linda Lee:

oh no!! i missed that part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Irwin:

Avatar 4:29pm V Priceless:

RATS! Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Irwin:

Great Rats drummer.
  4:31pm Pidge:

Good Rats. Always heard about them when I was younger. Aren't they a Long Island band? I realize I could Google it, but I prefer to operate in the fog of memory. More fun. Great show, Irwin. You are one of the most colorful pieces of candy in the FMU dish!
  4:32pm bill:

saw the rats many times at the 'Place in Dover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Linda Lee:

speaking of rats, found out recently that the colossal size of East Village rats remains the same regardless of average rental costs.
  4:33pm ?:

Good Rats! My favorite band for a spell, back then. Rest in Peace, Peppi.
Avatar 4:33pm V Priceless:

Peppi is missed - up until his passing in '13, he used to do lots of local gigs around Long Island here, with his two sons...what a set of pipes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Irwin:

I was there, Bill, at least a dozen times. They were like a house band at the Place. Always entertaining. The records never quite conveyed what they could present live.
Avatar 4:35pm V Priceless:

Mickey is a local here in Sea Cliff. Always see him in the bank, etc.
  4:37pm Pidge:

That Good Rats made me want to hear The Hassles, Attilla, heck ... I want to hear ZEBRA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Mister Dobalina:

Thank you for playing this, real nice composition !
Avatar 4:40pm V Priceless:

ha @ Attilla, Pidge
  4:40pm f0f0 (:

Oh, no...What happened with Seven Second Delay? Ken also mentioned something but I wasn't paying close attention.
  4:41pm Pidge:

The Ink Spots "Rorschach" LP is overlooked. An interesting attempt at psychedelia. Cadet 436 (1966)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm melinda:

hello all
Avatar 4:47pm Marshall Stacks:

I thought you said On Returning's suck rate was 4 out of 31? That's about 12%, which isn't bad.
  4:48pm Dean:

Perhaps the suck rate algorithm includes factors for weighting suck value of some tunes versus others?
  4:51pm Marc15:

WFMU has a large teen audience?
  4:52pm joeray:

Microtonal composer John Eaton! I never heard that single, thanks, Irwin!
Avatar 4:54pm Marshall Stacks:

@Dean That could be. I have the album, though, and I can't think of a track that would deserve a large Suck weighting. Further research may be required.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Michael 98145:

have to admit i've always enjoyed Laetitia's voice ...
  4:54pm Anonymous Coward:

I feel safe asserting that most of WFMUs audience and staff are teens at heart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Irwin:

f0f0 - Andy was mysteriously abducted to L.A. and Ken can't do the show without him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Michael 98145:

@AC, there is a very short list of folks i know who would ever consider joining us here.
Avatar 4:57pm northguineahills:

I second that Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Michael 98145:

raspberry pi music ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Linda Lee:

i like it! loved traffic as a youngster.
Avatar 5:03pm V Priceless:

this is swell - Traffic, less jammed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Irwin:

This EMS song is one of my all-time favorites by anyone. So much going on it.
  5:07pm wild neil:

i am still young ...like 14?? ...in my head....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Michael 98145:

you never cease to provide things i've never heard before
  5:12pm wild neil:

Irwin you bat .900 choosing Jazz i actually like which is way way better than 91.1 fm in Toronto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Irwin:

These Byard arrangements are so out there. I hear an influence on Sun Ra's piano style, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Parq:

Got to love this Byard.
  5:16pm f0f0 (:

Phew...Thanks, Irwin.

Suddenly I felt my WFMU world seemed to be falling apart. No more People Like Us, Monica filling you in, Ken not showing up for the last two weeks, no more SSD...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Irwin:

7SD returns next week, f0f0.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Michael 98145:

too much radio jazz is strictly background radiation
  5:21pm f0f0 (:

Got it, Irwin. I was trying to portray how my personal WFMU apocalypse would look like. I fear the day with no Irwin, Do or DIY, Ken, or 7SD...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Linda Lee:

this radio jazz is perfectly lovely. no complaints.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Michael 98145:

^ truth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Michael 98145:

would the teen version be *seven second attention span* ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Irwin:

I love jazz, and I love brunch, but you'll never find me at Jazz Brunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Parq:

Well, there's jazz and then there's that yuppie easy listening music that passes for jazz in most outlets (including, I gotta say, most of WBGO's programming). I'm not much for brunch at restaurants (when it comes to Sunday, I like sitting around in my pajamas until 2 pm), but if I did go to a brunch and it turned out to be a jazz brunch, I would neither run screaming nor expect to hear any worthwhile music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd be willing to try a jazz brunch once. If the musicians are doing the cooking and the chefs playing jazz, then maybe not, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Parq:

Michael @ 5:24, two points!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Parq:

By the way, do we still say "yuppie", now that they're middle aged and live in the burbs?
  5:34pm Fred R:

Nice set Irwin! Great show as always, and many thanks throughout the years!
  5:38pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

Another great Irwin show
Avatar 5:40pm V Priceless:

hey! Zero 7! Coolness! Great record
  5:45pm Dennis Diken:

that Grass Roots tune is one of my fave songs of all time!
  5:46pm Laura L:

Thanks, Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Linda Lee:

loving today's selections. seriously. balm for the spirit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Linda Lee:

personally i don't call fully mature yuppies by that name. they're Owners now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Michael 98145:

They are Borg
Avatar 5:51pm dale:

i hope they played this at someone's wedding or a prom - best hollies cover EVER!
  5:54pm Dennis Diken:

1st Grass Roots LP "Where Were You When I Needed You" - much of which is Sloan-Barri with Bones Howe on drums on some cuts and Hal Blaine on others (& Joe Osborne on bass) with other cuts performed by a San Francisco group whose name escapes me - is a stone classic
