  5:03pm P-90:

Hi Julie! So glad you're here!
  5:05pm phillip in the bronx:

julie:-) hey soo glad to hear you again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Julie:

hey everybody!
  5:13pm P-90:

btw @DJ Julie: last week had friends over, while we were cooking dinner we were taking turns playing music for each other off the internet- you know, "have you heard this?" kind of thisg. I played them "In the Dark' from one of your archives and they flipped, couldn't believe they hadn't heard this song or band before, they made me start it again as soon as it was done, had to hear it twice...
  5:15pm P-90:

Also I can't get enough of Cardigans
Avatar 5:16pm TehBadDr:

Hey Julie, Loved That Bad Girl track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Julie:

p-90 that's so cool. TBM is great indeed.
Avatar 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Julie ?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Julie:

  5:19pm Cherry:

Julie, do you do requests? or it depends on the song maybe?
  5:19pm SeanG:

Avatar 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Julie:

cherry -- sometimes
  5:21pm Cherry:

is it today?
  5:22pm Lisa Hammer:

omg this show ROCKS so far!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Julie:

you can make a request, I don't promise :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Hughie Considine:

A baby-naming guide I read not too long ago listed Walter among the least appealing of boys' names -- Carl was in that same category. I think Walter deserves better. Carl though, is admittedly tough to carry off. Unless you're a Wilson.
Avatar 5:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pete Townshend coined 'Power Pop'. I'm trying to promote the term 'SmartPop'. The Kinks perhaps - ? - proto-invented that...perhaps 'Village Green' especially...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Julie:

Isn't smart pop popcorn?
  5:24pm Cherry:

do you prefer a youtube link or the name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Hughie Considine:

Power pop, to me, implies a default chugging tempo. The Kinks are in a different category.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Julie:

cherry just give me the name
Avatar 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Hughie: ...or in the Move / ELO ?
@Julie: ...isn't 'Pop' a drink?
Avatar 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Hughie: ('Carl', I mean.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Julie:

Pop is indeed a drink, power pop must be heavy on the caffeine
Avatar 5:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...different category, right. Kinks inform Magnetic Fields, what have you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Hughie Considine:

@Rev, seems to me ELO is sort of symphonic pop. Power pop is Dwight Twilley and early Cheap Trick-derived.
Avatar 5:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that's my point: Who is PowerPop, Kinks is SmartPop...anyhow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Hughie Considine:

No one calls me Carl and gets away with it. 'Cept Dad, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm dale:

special treat - hot afternoon of the soul.
Avatar 5:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Haha! No - I mean - you can be 'Carl' in the Move...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Julie:

Carl is that rotten kid on Shameless
Avatar 5:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...forever Jung...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Hughie Considine:

Too Many Carls!
Avatar 5:32pm Sem Chumbo:

Gloom has lifted, there is light when I hear Julie and the Dark Night of the Soul.
Hiya, Julie. Been awhile, so glad to hear you.
  5:33pm P-90:

I like the beach photo on the playlist page. Let me guess: left to right, DJ Stashu, DJ Meghan, and you? Or is that DJ Faye in the middle?
Avatar 5:35pm TehBadDr:

Nice dark cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Julie:

I would say that's Faye on the right
  5:39pm P-90:

Oh, I thought Faye was blonde.
Maybe they could do a "FMU DJ Bratz Calendar" next year for the Swag-for-Lifers...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Julie:

she was kinda pink last time I saw her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Stevel:

I KNEW I should have listened to more Berlin.
  5:44pm Cherry:

could you play Mr.Oizo - Stunt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Julie:

I don't know what that is, but I'll check it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm dale:

love this kristeen young.
  5:56pm melinda:

I thought I heard Gary Numan,
  5:57pm MONEYBAG$:

Maybe it's me, but Gary Numan's world view always struck me as a bit bleak
  5:57pm melinda:

That was supposed to be a period, not a comma.
  6:00pm Lisa Hammer:

Julie! Karen from Arkivestry says you are blowing her mind with this show and making her work so much more enjoyable! Plus you played Gabrielle's song! Thank you! She's freaking out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Julie:

that's always nice to hear!
  6:03pm P-90:

Hey, is that THE Lisa Hammer?!
  6:03pm Lisa Hammer:

The Same!
  6:05pm P-90:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Julie:

hey Lisa, what's the name of this song?
  6:06pm Lisa Hammer:

A Fixed Place of Heaven
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Mister Dobalina:

Um, I was just looking for some clarification, but isn't your background music, when you speak, from the group Bananarama, which Foxy Brown sampled?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Julie:

Probably, I've always credited to Foxy Brown not sure how much is Bananarama, that's the name on the track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Mister Dobalina:

Pretty sure it's all Bananarama, from 1984, same title. But any who.
  6:14pm P-90:

Ophelia Addams! My first childhood crush...
  6:14pm matt:

Whoa this rules
Avatar 6:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...ah - don't you wanna be inna band...it's so kewl...
  6:16pm matt:

  6:20pm JakeGould:

Hey! It’s disgusting outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Julie:

Avatar 6:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I saw the The Replacements in a *tiny* Cambridge bar: they were in dresses & I was on LSD. One tiny anecdote...
  6:21pm JakeGould:

Also, my prayers to anyone having to get to Jersey City via the PATH this weekend. So many trains not working.
Avatar 6:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Don't play guitar ?!? What an exotic creature...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Julie:

haha when you have a voice like that
Avatar 6:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm dale:

  6:28pm SeanG:

that's awesome Rev Rabbit
  6:29pm P-90:

So Hard to imagine that anyone with life-threatening cancer would drink a lot of alcohol and eat junk food...
  6:30pm Lisa Hammer:

Depression is a hell of a drug.
  6:32pm P-90:

Combining "alternative" approaches with judiciously chosen "mainstream" medicine is called Complimentary Medicine. And no, very few medical schools teach anything about it. They should.
Avatar 6:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sometimes you have to cut something out (say) for the good of the whole body. But - that doesn't address why it happened - or make you healthy. Problems that are long-term need long-term solutions - but - not generally our style...
  6:35pm Lisa Hammer:

I agree 100%. And I'm being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering, #2 in the nation. Imagine my SHOCK when they had no connection to nutrition or alternative medicine anywhere, and the doctors shrugged it all off! You have to really dig around to get anyone to reluctantly help you with that.
  6:36pm Lisa Hammer:

I have the BRCA1 gene like Angelina Jolie
  6:38pm P-90:

To clarify: US med schools don't teach it.
In Europe, they're way ahead of us on this. But here, Big Pharma is super-dominant and is allowed to name the agenda.
  6:39pm Lisa Hammer:

yes. They also haven't publicized this but there is a pharma co making synthetic thc pills with a patent
Avatar 6:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- because - in the U.S. - Money is Gawd. Again. (Sigh.)
  6:41pm Lisa Hammer:

@slugluv, Diane Arbus exhibit at Met Breuer is interesting too. While you're there, also check out the "Unfinished" exhibit which ends on Sept. 4. And if you go to MoMA, see the Nan Goldin thing on the 2nd floor too. Pictures of my aunt Cookie & my cousin are in there.

awww Lisa it's always a pleasure to have you visit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm dale:

and that is just SO way COOL! Cookie Mueller is your aunt? WOW!!!!
@ melinda -- her books are great but please do go see an exhibit if you have the chance! this one @ MoMA sounds very similar to "Ballad"
  7:43pm famous original italianicewolf:

I saw The Ballad of Sexual Dependency in the 90s, it would be good to see it again, especially since Goldin is always changing it.

why don't people have aunt's named 'cookie' anymore? guy i worked for called his wife 'freckles' - we had a dog named freckles when i was a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Ike:

@slugluv it is actually called "Ballad of Sexual Dependency" at MoMA. And based on what @icewolf commented above, I presume it's a different version than elsewhere perhaps. It's not clear from the info provided at MoMA as far as I saw. Thanks @icewolf.

I discovered the book called the Ballad of Sexual Dependency at the Iowa City Public Library in the mid 90s and would check it out frequently, and when my record showed that it was overdue once when I was trying to check out another book, the librarian was too embarrassed to say the title out loud. Which made me embarrassed because it sounds like a bad self-help title if you don't know otherwise.

@melinda: ha! It's also the title of a song from The Threepenny Opera

excellent show. i wish you'd get a fall prime time slot - not just a summer replacement special - like shields and yarnell.

Julie, thanx for a wonderful set, great interview and live performance. Actually getting dark out now, feels more comfortable. Looking forward to your next fill-in or show.

@icewolf: I had no idea!
Avatar 7:55pm slugluv1313:

@ Ike -- fascinating! the version i saw was from the early 1980s (i have the book too)
but even then, it was an ever-evolving show/exhibit of photographs and music -- i had no idea she was still doing this -- very cool!

What a treat it was to have Lisa Hammer on the comments board. A great broadcast, Julie. Can't wait for the next fill-in. Hoping you get a regular time slot someday soon.
Avatar 7:59pm slugluv1313:

@ melinda -- omg! i only knew the title through Nan Goldin, so . . . i guess it would never occur to me that it was anything else! bummer about that librarian!
@ icewolf -- i had no idea either! (& my Mom LOVED The Threepenny Opera, i should KNOW this!)
Avatar 7:59pm slugluv1313:
