I don't think your show has started yet, but do you know what song is on the Drummer stream right now?
Avatar 7:00pm

evening Gary and everyone!
Avatar 7:01pm

oh never mind!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm

Hi Quinn and Bob! Quinn, that was a Heldon, Cocaine Blues, from Third (1975)

France. Project of Richard Pinhas. Well worth exploring the entire catalog.
Avatar 7:05pm

Ha! My husband said "hey check it out, sounds like your kind of thing" and I said "sounds like a Pinhas jawn!" and it was! Merci la France
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm

Ah, Dean -- thanks!

The band we're starting off with is the band in the photo to the left

David from Cleveland here..
My brother and his buddy are
fans of Heldon.. really creative
stuff. Is this the direction your
show is going in tonight, Gary?
Avatar 7:08pm

I like them already.

The cat is not impressed by my dancing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

I dance a lot in front of my cat, too, but sometimes I want to believe that he *does* look at least semi-entertained.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

It could be, however, that he's just waiting for food.
Avatar 7:18pm

Pie looks hilariously disgruntled. It only encourages me.

Avatar 7:42pm

Heya Melinda! Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm

Love the not so subtle insertion of the Drive My Car bass riff here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm

Or, wait, no -- Day Tripper, isn't it
Avatar 7:44pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- &/or 'Day Tripper'. Every guitarist loves a good riff...

Really good set, Gary. Your show is easily my favorite at WFMU..
one of my top three or four all-time radio shows, and I've listened
to college/community radio thirty years. You introduce new sounds..
never disappoint
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm

Aw, thanks, David! But is musicians what makes the goodness; I just press buttons
Avatar 7:48pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but I think it's more or less the Dizzy Gillespie tune :
- that was one of the earliest Latin Jazz standards...The Beatles were actually pretty open to Latin rhythms ('Twist & Shout' - a dance song - if you think about it!)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm

There's a terrific book I want to go back to that traces a lot of Latin influences in US (tho not British) pop ... trying to remember the title
Avatar 7:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...more obvious 'Latin Beatles' example was 'Don't Bother Me', George's 1st song off their 2nd album...
Avatar 7:57pm

excellent first hour Gary! - catch the rest later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm

Night, Bob!

"Raid kills bug dead" was written by the poet Lew Welch while working for an ad agency in Chicago
Avatar 8:24pm
tim abdellah:

Hi Gary & everyone - Loggin' on late today. I see you dipped into the Moulay Ahmed Elhassani!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm

Tim! Yeah, I played both of those tracks with the same title -- such amazing guitar sounds on that cassette
Avatar 8:28pm
tim abdellah:

Indeed! BTW, it turns out Boris played in SF last week, the day after your alt.J-rock show! Of course I didn't find out about it 'til a couple days later :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm

Oh, man! And I think Melt-Banana was just or is now in Los Angeles
Avatar 8:31pm

hey everybody

I just missed Melt Banana here, too (but have seen them)
Check out this clip later.. Mona of Azna de L'Ader

Avatar 8:33pm

omg, i just went to the Boris page to see if there were east coast shows and then i saw they reissued Pink because it came out ten years ago and if you'll excuse me now i need to go lay down in my coffin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

Oooh, can't wait to see that clip, David ... Ha, hyde ... Hey, Steve!
Avatar 8:35pm
tim abdellah:

Dang - Melt-Banana was in SF @ Slim's and Boris was in Oakland @ New Parish the same night - May 5!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm

Whaaaa? If someone was aware of that before it happened, they would have physically split in half, b/c how could you decide?
Avatar 8:39pm

seems like Boris is in the states all summer.Vegas in July. East coast shows in August. (Brooklyn Aug 5; Boston Aug 9)

Leaving the library now.. good night, folks..
Give a listen to Bob Lehr's World Music Show at 11:00 pm EST
KPOO San Francisco..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm

Night, David, and thanks for the tip!
Avatar 8:52pm

this Stinky Picnic is super cool. i love how they have two albums called Minecraft & Minecraft II and then say "ABSOLUTELY NOT SPONSORED BY NOR AFFILIATED IN ANY WAY WITH ACTUAL MINECRAFT. PLEASE DON'T SUE US."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm

Ha ha ... I love them so much, Hyde -- not the first time I've played them, nor will it be the last. I think it's basically a father/daughter duo
Avatar 9:04pm

*snert* Stinky Picnic is hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm

"Big Butt Intruders"? Hmm, any relation to the, ahem, literary masterwork "Space Raptor Butt Invasion", I wonder? Eh, probably not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm

greetings Gary and Bodegaronies
Avatar 9:11pm

it's coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm

hi hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm

Hey there, Ike and Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm

hyde, i never told you the irrelevant fact that there's at least one person and some of that person's friends that call me hyde, even though that's not my name...because i remind him of Hyde on "that 70's show", which i'm not sure how to take! (though he means it as a compliment)
Avatar 9:22pm

@coelacanth well, here's a related tidbit of info! someone associated with "that 70's show" (i'm not entirely sure if it was a writer or producer) went to high school with my older brother and they used the name because they thought it was cool. the character has nothing to do with my brother, but they liked the name (and associated references)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm

wow, that's really cool! it was because he knew of you. not everyone gets to say a tv character was (sort of) named after him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm

...(i'm glad i relayed my irrelevant story then!)
Avatar 9:31pm

it's funny, i actually watched the show for a couple years before i ever knew that fact. there are three hyde brothers in my family separated by many years and somehow we all ended up being called "hyde" by all our friends instead of by our first names. i guess it's just one of those things.
Doug Schulkind:

I'd rather be a Berpisah than Fartpoopah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm

hyde, you got lucky with that name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm

This NYTimes correction (thanks to Kurt Gottschalk, who posted it to FB): "Because of an editing error, an article Monday about a theological battle being fought by Muslim imams and scholars in the West against the Islamic State misstated the Snapchat handle used by Suhaib Webb, one of the Muslim leaders speaking out. It is imamsuhaibwebb, not Pimpin4Paradise786"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm

...well, it's easy to make that mistake!
Avatar 9:40pm

@Gary i saw that on the twitter. hilarious.
Doug Schulkind:

Moussa Motherfuckin Doumbia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm

Good thing our time is up, b/c nothing could follow that
Avatar 9:59pm

damn, there is sure something special about music from Senegal.

thanks Gary!

This old African stuff is sooo good.
There's not enough free hours in
a lifetime to delve into the great
'70s music from Africa, SE Asia..
just wonderful..
Avatar 10:00pm

nice one. see ya next week.
Avatar 10:01pm

or, well, Mali ( i thought they were saying Senegal!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm

here's another i'm sure i ought to come back to for what i missed.
Thanks Gary!
later on y'all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm

...i'm also partial to music of zimbabwe, especially....but also kenya, ethiopia...
Avatar 10:04pm
tim abdellah:

That was fun - catch y'all soon! Thanks G!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm

They were indeed saying Senegal, but I think Moussa Doumbia is from Mali -- but I'm no expert! ... night everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Doug Schulkind:

Yup, Mali.
