Love is also in the air, according to Tom Jones. I think he was referring to panties being flung
  9:42am P-90:

SO cool that The Orb is still making new albums. These days I'm just happy to see anything/anyone that lasts.

I dig the AM radio production on that Charles Bradley song.

The Orb's quality declined significantly after 2000 for a while. Glad to hear their sounds apparently getting impressive again lately. They also put on a really good show in W-burg a few months ago.

Avatar 10:23am Chris from DC:

Liking this Iranian thing a lot.
Avatar 10:24am Chris M.:

@Chris from DC: most of the comp sounds like this which made me think it was less experimental and more whatever this is.
  10:24am bill:

wow this persian stuff is kewl

very wash-y
Avatar 10:25am bobdoesthings:

Avatar 11:09am Sem Chumbo:

They have Spring in LA? Never knew.
Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

It snowed here yesterday and it stuck. People are offended. I'm all "hey I'm from the UP. The only time I get upset at snow is when it's in May."
Avatar 11:14am βrian:

Sem, did you know that Badgers, as a moniker, came from lead miners?
Avatar 11:15am Chris from DC:

I walked out on Mogwai in favor of preserving what was left of my hearing. Loudest thing I've ever heard.
Avatar 11:15am just dc pat:

Ah, I see we're back on track with the 2016's. Nice work, M.
Avatar 11:16am Cecile:

I saw them before the Pretty Things in '98 or '99. Pretty Things were louder, but not by much.
Avatar 11:16am just dc pat:

SHIT, I missed new Mogwai?? Why didn't somebody tell me??? So that's the way it is, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am JP from KC:

This track is great for the gloomy clusterfuck of midwest weather we've got going on here.
Avatar 11:17am this guy:

...is digging the show Chris, thanks
Avatar 11:17am Sem Chumbo:

@ βrian: I did not know that. I do know that it was a bodger who made my Windsor chair.
Having a look at the Badger thing now.
Avatar 11:19am davej:

@Chris from DC I couldn't have walked out if I'd wanted to as I was also blind from the strobes pointing out from the stage at the crowd. Very intense!
Avatar 11:19am βrian:

Sem, they need you in Flint.
Avatar 11:20am Sem Chumbo:

Wisconsin was dubbed the "Badger State" because of the lead miners who first settled there in the 1820s and 1830s. Without shelter in the winter, they had to "live like badgers" in tunnels burrowed into hillsides."
Well, dip me in honey and call me mellified. Thx!
  11:22am Dean:

Saw Mogwai at the Troubadour in Hollywood in late '99. Not loud at all. Maybe they toned it down because the venue is so small.
Avatar 11:24am just dc pat:

I use to pride myself on my groups playing really loud. But now I have respect for bands that can get a good sound at a controlled level. Did I just turn into an old guy?
  11:25am Dean:

Eh, dc pat? Speak up! Can't hear ya!
Avatar 11:26am Marcel M:

@Pat: I think you did!

Certain bands just seem strange when the volume is too low. Some bands it doesn't matter as much.
Avatar 11:26am Chris from DC:

I'm ok with loud when it fits. I don't get loud for its own sake.
Avatar 11:26am Marcel M:

There is something amazing about seeing a band play way too loud in a small club. But it does drown out the drums sometimes, which makes it kind of pointless.
  11:27am Dean:

J&MC was strange with volume too low. Axel Dorner, John Butcher, and Xavier Charles, not so much.
Avatar 11:27am Chris M.:

the last time i saw Mogwai they just set off several hundred air horns simultaneously through the PA while abrasive dust was blown into the audience's eyes. eight people fainted and an elderly man went into labor.
Avatar 11:27am Marcel M:

@Dean: J&MC during this tour? Where did you see them?
Avatar 11:28am Cecile:

I love John Butcher's solo works. That's the kind of thing you can play for someone who doesn't get free improv and they'll appreciate it.
Avatar 11:28am Chris from DC:

I'd have paid to see that.
  11:29am Dean:

You could hear the spittle forming on their lips the volume was so quiet. Dorner, Butcher, and Charles, I mean.

No, Marcel. A long time ago at Hollywood Palladium. Oddly low volume.
Avatar 11:29am Cecile:

Konono #1 was upset they couldn't get any volume. They were playing this largely folk venue, and the sound people wouldn't turn it up.
Avatar 11:29am just dc pat:

2004?? CHRIS!
Avatar 11:30am Marcel M:

@Dean: Ah! Ok. I saw them this time around at term 5 and it was pretty loud. I was way in the back and my ears were ringing after.
Avatar 11:30am Cecile:

High Rise are a great band who needs lots and lot of volume - it's like another instrument.
Avatar 11:30am Marcel M:

Have you seen them, Cecile? I envy you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Lewis:

@Cecile - Konono #1 is all about loud - if it isn't distorting it ain't right
  11:30am Polyus:

Mogwai have always been pretty loud in my experience, but at least it's not a shrill loud. That is the worst.
Avatar 11:31am Marcel M:

In order to play motorcycle guitar, one must dime his stack.
  11:31am Dean:

Would love to hear J&MC again live but loud. John Butcher could open up, but not the other way around.
Avatar 11:31am just dc pat:

Exactly @Cecile, there are times when it's necessary. "another instrument" = perfect description.
Avatar 11:32am just dc pat:

I went with d boon style shrill loud. Turned the bass almost all the way down and the treble all the way up, using a Telecaster..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd like to hear some of listener Lyle's Mogwai stories.
Avatar 11:34am Cheri Pi:

when/where did you see Konono #1??? Jellous. CECILE!
Avatar 11:34am βrian:

If not gelatinous ...
Avatar 11:34am Cecile:

Around 2005, 06? They were starting to get into a groove, and then they had to stop. Ugh. folkies.
  11:36am bill:

For loud see Mainliner
Avatar 11:36am Cecile:

sorry, folkies who fear electrification...
Avatar 11:36am Chris M.:

when i saw Mogwai play at CBGBs they covered the floor with those large sponges you use to wash your car with. everyone thought it was for our comfort and people started lying down on them. then they dumped tons of paste onto the crowd along with boiling hot water and lit off M80s for forty minutes!
  11:36am bill:

a pal pointed out that slayer sounds loud at any volume
Avatar 11:37am Cecile:

Bill, I missed Mainliner, they played here about six months before High Rise did.
Avatar 11:38am Cecile:

ugh. slayer live. :(
Avatar 11:38am Chris M.:

slayer sucks at any volume
Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

I like their records tons. Live, bad things happen to me and my friends at their shows.
  11:39am Dean:

They took that sponge-and-M80s routine from Sinatra.
Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

Patti Page was more of a bristle brush and Roman candle girl.
Avatar 11:39am βrian:

Really? I was sure it was Steve Reich.
  11:40am bill:

there was a news article once titled "9 out of 10 kids who kill listen to slayer"
  11:41am Dean:

Jo Stafford taught GG Allin everything he knew, and Ethel Merman was Lux Interior's mentor.
Avatar 11:41am Cheri Pi:

  11:43am Mork Av Myndi:

Great Show. Love your Selections
  11:44am Dean:

He was an inspiration to my parents, name-wise. Thank gosh they weren't fans of Bing Crosby.
  11:45am bill:

Or nancy sinatra.
Avatar 11:45am Chris from DC:

How could I forget Patti Page? Much louder than Mogwai.
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

Today's word is "HRRRRAW"
  11:45am Fred:

Those happy pledge monkeys on the home page stole all my dance moves.
  11:46am Dean:

By all means, call me Nancy!
  11:46am JakeGould:

Walter Matthau's protege is Glenn Danzig.
Avatar 11:47am Cecile:

"Mother" was originally entitled "Felix"
  11:47am Dean:

Danzig did appear in an off-Broadway revival of "The Odd Couple" with Ian Astbury as Felix.
Avatar 11:47am βrian:

@Dean: you'd 've made a hell of a cherry.
  11:47am Dean:

Jinx!
  11:48am JakeGould:

"Stairway to Heaven" was originally titled "Out of Control Gurney Rolling Down a Hill."
  11:48am Dean:

"Hell of a Cherry"...good name for a band.
Avatar 11:48am Chris M.:

i went to this Mogwai show one time and they wouldn't start until after midnight at which point the band jumped into an inflatable swimming pool and started eating snacks. it was totally nuts.
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

Great whatevers, uh, do something.
Avatar 11:49am davej:

That's the Jocks for you
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

what kind of snacks?
Avatar 11:49am Chris M.:

@Cecile: cheetos, pizzer, pop, you name it
  11:50am Dean:

Slim Jims, I imagine. Didn't Mogwai do a commercial for those?
Avatar 11:50am Cecile:

wow, they went crazy.
  11:50am bill:

cecile, nuts i'm guessing
Avatar 11:50am just dc pat:

Chris M: I saw that Mogwai tour too. Talk about awesome...
  11:53am Dean:

What do you call somebody who hates to exercise?

Misogymist.
  11:54am P-90:

I was bummed when I found out my health insurance provider strictly refuses to cover any injury resulting directly or indirectly from live Mogwai.
Avatar 11:55am Cecile:

My insurance company does that for hailstorms and Slayer.
