Dammit, do we not get to see the caveman turn into a DJ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm foofs:

Did JB make any good records beyond the three or four tunes that we're ever allowed to hear? Genuinely curious to know.
  5:09pm Floyd:

Oooooh! Scary, kids. Very spooky. Sounds like Kount Funkula is kreeping up on us or something. I'm shivering. Scary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Gaylord Fields:

@foofs: He made literally dozens of the best songs ever recorded, starting in the mid-fifties throughout the seventies!
Avatar 5:12pm cory:

not to mention the live shows where he really shined (shone?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm fleep:

Wow, just four Capybara Of Today pledges away from goal!
Avatar 5:13pm cory:

oh wow!! hiya fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Gaylord Fields:

@foofs: @cory is right! Listen to either of the Live at the Apollo albums, and be astounded!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Rhody Chris:

JB had a ton of great records. Listen to one of the anthology collections and it's like getting punched in the face by funk every step of the way. He also had some more bluesy tracks earlier on that were pretty great. I have a 45 of him doing a solid version of Kansas City. Plus his live records are amazing. So much energy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@RhodyC: There are arrows around the video & you can get to the Caveman graphic that way.

...'She'll find her head to pound on'...
  5:16pm JimB:

Gaylord, might I add best songs AND best grooves ever recorded?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Gaylord Fields:

@JimB: You may, and you must.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Rhody Chris:

AHA! Thanks RR.

Avatar 5:21pm @sugarwolf@:

do you have any fake Charo :):)
  5:22pm P-90:

Because what's better than fake?
Avatar 5:22pm steve:

someone put a Charo related comment in their pledge!
Avatar 5:22pm geezerette:

James Brown's album,"Hell" from 1974 is unbelievable!
Can't think of anything by him not worth listening to.
Avatar 5:23pm @sugarwolf@:

@steve: well, Charo is the best!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Caryn:

Another DJ this week played a long ad for a "beautiful music" channel, talking about how their music programming was carefully planned according to time of day etc. I'm kinda hoping Gaylord has that same ad on his premium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm fleep:

@P-90 Very equinox-y. White roses starting to bloom, scent of honeysuckle and orange blossoms.
  5:26pm Listener Robert:

I'm going to remember that one, Venal Equinox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm foofs:

Gaylord, Chris: in the UK here. On one hand, we're told JB is the first and last word, and on the other hand, we only hear these same half-dozen tracks. Which are now so advertising-imbued, they feel more like part of the problem. Live at the Apollo? Got it out the library once. One of the great holy texts, right? Hmph. I reckon his confected symbolic value greatly outweighs his music. A bandleader with good taste.
Please, someone prove me wrong about all this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Gaylord Fields:

@@sugarwolf@: Charo is too real to imitate!
  5:29pm P-90:

Not to be confused with Veal Equinox, one of my favorite non-Vegan recipes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm cosmic matrix:

french pygmies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Gaylord Fields:

@foofs: I disagree strenuously. He is essential listening.
Avatar 5:29pm geezerette:

@ foofs:
Listen to JB's album,"Hell",from 1974.
Avatar 5:31pm geezerette:

...didn't mean to post twice...(blush)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Gaylord Fields:

@foofs: I can convince you of nothing. This is the 21st century, and you can do ample research on the subject on your own, which is all I choose to encourage you to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Caryn:

I can't remember who it was that said that JB's band sound was designed so that every instrument was played as if it was percussion. Made me relisten to a lot of his stuff in a different way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm patrick321:

@foofs "Star Time" 4-CD set, late 1950s thru 1970s, may be the greatest bargain in musical history. I'm sure it's available in UK at a similar price: www.amazon.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Rhody Chris:

I could see (hear?) that argument. The horns and strings are usually very punchy like percussion.
Avatar 5:37pm cory:

black dynamite is so good
  5:38pm P-90:

@Caryn: yes, JB's band(s) are famous for their unique, distinctive style. Part of that sound was a very staccato, percussive way of playing almost everything. Every note was played right at the front of the beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Rhody Chris:

Patrick - that set was my intro to JB. When I was a kid my dad played that thing on repeat it seemed. We listened to records and CDs all day every weekend and I remember hearing that more than anything besides maybe the Good Morning Vietnam soundtrack.
Avatar 5:39pm BadGuyZero:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm foofs:

@geezerette I'll do that. @Gaylord We're only ever given a bar of 'I Feel Good' as part of an advert. But as you've reminded me, it's worth making an active effort.
@all: THANK YOU! Finally I can find out why JB isn't the world's most glaring case of Emperor's New Clothes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...HolyCrow! Finale countdown!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm foofs:

@geezerette: 'Hell' was only £2.40+£1.26p&p, so I just bought it.
Avatar 5:43pm BadGuyZero:

I second the recommendation of James Brown's "Star Time" box set. Great tunes and a crash-course in JB's music. There are a few live tracks from an unreleased 1971 show in Paris. Demand for the full concert was so huge that Polydor released it a few months later ["Love Power Peace: Live at the Olympia, Paris 1971"].
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Probably no one can be said to have ever created a whole kind of Music all by themselves - but James Brown I think comes closer than anyone.
  5:45pm P-90:

JB would talk about playing "on the one", meaning he expected his band to emphasize the first beat in each measure.
Avatar 5:46pm geezerette:

@foofs:That's great! (:c)
  5:47pm JakeGould:

@foofs: Score a copy of "Star Time." If your mind is blown by pretty much all of it sit down and realize this: There's still tons more.
Avatar 5:48pm geezerette:

@RevRab: Agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Rhody Chris:

Just looked on Amazon and Star Time on CD is actually cheaper than MP3 format. It's £28 on UK Amazon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Caryn:

I'm gonna briefly steer the conversation away from JB or the Marathon to wonder how I never knew about this story, and to state that methinks he doth protest too much: www.stereogum.com...
Avatar 5:54pm Sem Chumbo:

Falsetto becomes Slim, doncha think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Rhody Chris:

Nah, Ted Cruz's face is way more punchable. And as someone who lives in Texas I feel the need to apologize for his existence on the national stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Caryn: ...I think we have an Undead Shapeshifter on our hands...the truth is out there (& if Caryn doesn't already know it - what chance do we mortal minds have?)...
@Sem: Yeah - a real Yma Sumac...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm foofs:

It's good to hear all this about JB, cos I've been looking for an 'in' on him for decades - there's got to be something there!
Avatar 5:56pm geezerette:

Yip Roc!
Avatar 5:56pm cory:

i laughed my ass off at that story. way better than zodiac
  5:56pm JimB:

Foofs, if you decide that you do like JB after all, you must check out Fela Kuti's music for some amazing transatlantic cross-pollination.
Avatar 5:58pm cory:

gaylord, that was more than a little weird. i feel a bit creeped out now

Avatar 6:02pm cory:

JB influence in post-punk too, Talking Heads etc etc
  6:04pm P-90:

JB influence in a WHOLE LOT of music that's come since

PunkFunk - all the Motorik stuff...

@steve: I have PTSD about knocks on the door...

Gaylord's Fake Beatles blog: blog.wfmu.org... - this stuff has become essential to me!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Caryn:

Well, that's it. Last pledge of the Marathon has been sent.
  6:08pm P-90:

I can almost hear them holding their noses in the studio to help get that adenoidal Liverpudlian sound in in those Lennon/McCartney-style harmonies
Avatar 6:11pm cory:

found mine. The Beetle Beat Featuring I Want to Hold Your Hand by The Buggs. (CX-212)
  6:13pm P-90:

@cory: I believe Gaylord showed a slide of that LP's cover the last time I saw him give his talk on Fake Beatles
  6:14pm steve:

these fakes are gold!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm dale:

i still haven't ascribed five dollars of my mouse pledge to anyone. what to do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Gaylord Fields:

@dale: Pledge for Fake Smiths! They're worth a five spot.
  6:16pm P-90:

So ascribe it now, problem solved
Avatar 6:16pm cory:

@p-90: i guess my dad bought it shortly after he married my mom. money is tight, etc. he splurges and buys a beatles album. now i have some tastey mid 60s garage rock

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm foofs:

Gene's single 'For the Dead' is a super-duper fake Smiths record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Caryn:

@dale: e-mail Joe McG and ask him to credit Gaylord the final 5 bucks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm dale:

that music reminds me of those albums you bought as a kid and realize when you put them on at home that they are sung 'in the style of the original artists'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Rhody Chris:

Or when you buy an album on itunes only to find it's the "karaoke version" done by some shitty cover band.
  6:25pm P-90:

There are also sound-alikes that aren't really "fake", Robin Hitchcock often sounds like a dead-on Lennon impersonator for instance, but that's just him.
Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Walt:

In the annals of fake bands, the existence of this fake take on a sort-of fake band reaches some kind of meta-apex:

I have this album, it doesn't have the redeeming feature of being kind of fun - it's terrible.
Avatar 6:26pm cory:

damn, i need to own this
  6:27pm P-90:

OMG, it's Fake Lani Hall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm dale:

walt - that album is GOLD! or fool's gold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Rhody Chris:

There is a meetup.com group for Brazilians here in Dallas. But yeah, I don't think it existed in the 60s.
Avatar 6:29pm cory:

dafuq? fake herman's hermits?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm dale:

you gotta admit, this fake herman's hermits is actually a good song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Adrian in London:

Pfff, aren't the bloody Stone Roses the fake Herman's Hermits? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Caryn:

Walt, that's a perfect example of an album where the cover art is the only thing it has going for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm dale:

fake gary lewis and the playboys would be scraping the barrel. but i'll bet gaylord knows some.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm melinda:

This fake Johnny Cash is very convincing.
Avatar 6:50pm BadGuyZero:

My introduction to Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins was via a record my grandparents had that featured JC and MR sound-alikes singing their hits.
  6:51pm P-90:

This goes beyond fake. More like an impersonation or a parody. A very respectful parody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm melinda:

Far out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Caryn:

There was a Johnny Cash soundalikes collection as a prize on one of the Ichiban shows during the Marathon. They played 2-3 soundalikes.
  6:52pm JakeGould:

I was introduced to Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins through the tons of record collection ads on the TV back in the day. Order now! LP, Cassette or 8-track: 800-989-9368

this sounds like wayne newton getting his growl on
  6:54pm JakeGould:

Is Wayne Newton still alive?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm foofs:

Sam Cooke was my absolute favourite when I was little.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm dale:

gaylord - how about some times that the sound alike became more popular than who he/she was imitating? (that's all of blues based rock and roll actually)
Avatar 6:55pm BadGuyZero:

I looked on Discogs and found the fake Johnny Cash/Marty Robbins record I listened to when I was four-/five-years old.

  6:55pm Listener Robert:

I have a friend (Dave Mandl knows him too) named John Pachak who used to pronounce it similarly to Johnny Paycheck.
  6:55pm JakeGould:

@BGZ: That is awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Caryn:

Johnny Cash was a killer on "Columbo", Wayne Newton was a baddie in a Bond film... Sp both did well in that regard.

  6:58pm Listener Robert:

It always makes me nervous that the pledgers have such a sense of drama & leave off until the final hours of the Marathon. It becomes a nail biter.

There must be dozens of WFMU people here in Dallas!
Avatar 6:59pm @sugarwolf@:

@BGZ: And go you!!
Avatar 7:01pm cory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Rhody Chris:

@Robert I always renew my mouse pledge at the beginning of the marathon but I usually end up dropping another few bucks during the H&M show to feel like I'm helping to meet the goal right at the finish line.
Avatar 7:01pm BadGuyZero:

@Rhody Chris: I've been surprised by the number of pledges from Dallas this marathon. I don't know if there's always been that many Dallas-based listeners or if WFMU listeners have started moving here over the past year.
